NEW YORK (AP) -- The NBA has fined Knicks guard J.R. Smith $50,000 for ''recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct'' after he tried to untie an opponent's sneaker a second time.

Smith untied Mavericks forward Shawn Marion's shoe during a free throw attempt at Dallas on Sunday and was warned not to repeat the act by the league office.

Coach Mike Woodson had said before Tuesday's home game against Detroit that Smith shouldn't be doing things like that, but the reserve guard then tried it again on Greg Monroe during a free throw attempt - with league disciplinarian Rod Thorn in attendance.

I was hoping they would. I would have been really pissed if Monroe would have rolled his ankle thanks to this crackhead.

Perfect candidate for the "will be broke 3 years after leaving the league" contingent.

Not that I disagree with this, but did they fine or warn folks when someones shoe came off & the opposing player threw it? I think it's happened a few times

Seems like I'm in the minority here but how the hell does this warrant a $50,000 fine?? I see it as equal to grabbing someone's jersey. I swear, if anyone else had done this people would be saying what a savvy, veteran move it was.

He said he does it all the time (meaning he would do it again and again). This is a way to stop him before it gets out of hand.

^ I wonder if the Players Association lets the fined player have a say in the charity they choose (league gets to donate half of it, PA the other half), and - I doubt this - whether the player can worm his way into a tax writeoff as a charitable donation.

I think it goes to the NBA related charities. Like Basketball without borders and things like that.

Childish nonsense by JR here. If I was a player and he'd try that, I'd probably kick him square in the teeth and take the suspension haha

Please. Shoelaces can untie by themselves. This shouldn't be an injury concern.

I don't think he'd be all that difficult to trade, his contract is not that bad.

I don't think its a complicated puzzle to get him to be productive either, he just shouldn't be in any type of 2nd option role.

Right after he conducted this kind of stupid detrimental, i knew that a sizable of NBA fans, regardless they are knicks fans or not, would be annoyed by him. JR really differentiates himself from other players all the more by this incident. My question is ,why did he do this ?Did he immerse himself in this as a means of self -distraction of his awful basketball performance ?He is struggling on court, for instance his FG% hits career low. Were he as efficient as last season, he might not do this. Why did he sacrifice his real -world reputation to this childish and idiotic action ?my speculation would be like he is bored and he does not focus on court. BTW, he will be the top candidate of shaqtin'A fool
