Red Sox released RHP Chris Carpenter.

They gave him his release in order to let him sign on with Japan's Yakult Swallows. Carpenter holds a 5.17 ERA and 10/17 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 career major league innings.

Half of the return for Theo, er.., Jair Bogaerts gone. Aaron Kurcz had a decent season going as a sometimes closer last year before being shut down and ultimately requiring TJ surgery.

Red Sox signed RHP Shunsuke Watanabe to a minor league contract.

The deal does not include an invitation to spring training. Watanabe was used almost exclusively as a starter in Japan, but he'll try to make it up to the majors with the Red Sox as a submarining reliever. The 37-year-old posted a 4.62 ERA with a 9/9 K/BB ratio over 25 1/3 innings in 2013 for the Chiba Lotte Marines.

Best of luck to Shinsuke. Not sure if I'd trust a 37 yr. old pitcher though.

He could have the same kind of success as Hideki, 1-2 years of being fantastic, then batters figuring him out.
