Wow... I just checked ESPN to see what NBA games were on today and saw the Knicks were down freaking 34 points to the Celtics at home. Can we go ahead and give Brad Stevens Coach of the Year now? What he's doing with this young Celtics team has been pretty awesome.

I just checked the Knicks score...my jaw dropped.

I also turned on the game on msg...Holy **** this is one of if not the most quiet game I have ever heard.

I can hear the players talking, ball bouncing very loud...The crowd is just dead. There might as well be nobody in the room.

The Knicks could learn a thing or two from Houston and shot-selection.

There's no reason for more than 1/3rd of your shots to be deep two point jumpers, like today (it's closer to a 1/2). I just don't get how teams this day and age, with all the knowledge we have (or, in this case, common sense) could ever be so complacent about something like that. It's the worst shot in the sport, and the Knicks. They take 30% of their shots this season outside the paint and inside the 3 point line (deep 2s). The Rockets take only 10% of their shots from there...and thus have the best offense in the league. The Knicks take more deep 2s than 3 pointers...and that's just poor coaching a terrible basketball IQs. As a team they're decent midrange shooters, but it still doesn't justify it.

And defensively we know they're just **** without Chandler.

But this is remarkable.

Exactly. I've seen the occasional criticism of the Rockets for their lack of mid-range game, but mid-range jumpers and long 2-pointers are not the shots you want to take to be an efficient offense. You want shots around the basket, uncontested 3-pointers and free throws. The Rockets have clearly been an extreme of that this season, but I think they're also proving that it works. I'm actually surprised other teams haven't adopted that strategy.

I know it's a tongue-in-cheek comment, but no. They do miss him on defense, but the biggest dropoff has actually been offensively.

The bigger change has come offensively. The defense has dipped, but only from 106.3 to 107.1 (defensive rating). The problem is mainly offensive. Most people saw it coming. What the Knicks did last year was unsustainable, and they lost a lot of the shooting that made them so good. Their offensive rating has fallen from 111.1 to 105.2. That's a much bigger drop.

A ton of that is due to shot selection. They're shooting fewer threes and on a much lesser percent. They're shooting way more deep twos to compound that problem. A lot of guys overachieved last year too (like JR and Felton). Bargs has actually played well, but he brings basically nothing to the table besides those midrange shots, and he's not shooting the three ball very well at all.

They're doing worse than just about anyone could have expected, but significant regression should have been expected.

Yes he is

The ONLY area he was above average in terms of efficiency last season was in the restricted area. Every other area on the court and he was average or worse in terms of FG%. So, this year he's playing the 3 and 70% of his shots are coming from elsewhere on the court. It's just dumb. He's a 4 in this league, and he'll be destructive if all he's doing is hanging on the perimeter.

Agreed. I don't mind Stu. But Billy Mac treats every game, and even every call, like game 7 of the Finals. It becomes a bit grating after a while. I feel like the Lakers and all their greatness should have a more composed and flat line announcer.

Kobe is not going to be the same player anymore. It takes players a really long time to get lift back from major injuries.

Take Kobe, at 35, off an achilles and watching this game, he may never get it back. I look at the next 2 1/2 years of Kobe as farewell years for Laker fans and a horrible miscalculation by Laker management to pay someone $24 million a year who may only go for 18/7/5 at ages 35, 36 and 37 after over 18 seasons.

I had this depressing thought today about Rose, and how if he never gets to 100% he could very well be the first player ever with an MVP and not make the HOF. The reason: his game is all about athleticism. If e loses it, he's cooked. Kobe has already made the transition to a less hyper-athleticism based game to a more refined and skilled one. He definitely won't ever be the exact same he was before...but if anyone can be successful at 35 off of a major injury, it's him.

But yes, I do think it's a bit too optimistic for Kobe fans to assume he'll be the same as last year. But then again, maybe he transforms his game even more to truly less of a scorer and more of a play-maker...and that could help do the trick. He's a chameleon, and that's awesome.

But there is way too much wishful thinking on this forum when it pertains to Kobe Bryant. No athlete has ever defied age in human history, it always catches up to them. It caught up to Michael Jordan, it caught up with Brett Favre, it caught up with Jerry Rice.. everyone. All the greats.

At some point, Kobe won't be great anymore. He WAS and always will be a legend. But fans and Laker fans in particular are getting their hopes up so high that he's going to continue this legendary run playing like a MVP until he retires. It's just not realistic to think that's going to happen.

I don't disagree. Kobe fans worship him more than most fans worship their favorite players. It's been such a long and successful ride that it's hard to blame them. They're going to be overly optimistic about it. But so be it. Time will tell.

He isn't ageless. He will fall off eventually (probably significantly this year). But his game is truly so well refined that he should sustain it much longer than most

I don't think for a second he'll be as good as he was last year, but I definitely think, as long as his head's in it and he doesn't just wanna volume-score, that he can be very very good.

I tend to agree, I think it's amazing how much he has sustained it.

But that's the point, he HAS sustained his play. He's 35 years old already!! T-Mac, Iverson and Carter's games are long gone. Two are retired, one is a role player. Those were Kobe's foes all his career, he's surpassed their age and more. He's had his 'sustainability' vs. his peers.

It's not like he's ancient, and he's always been very skilled. I get why there was a lot of optimism honestly. I mean, there were a lot of reasons to be. Even down to the fact that it's a contract season. Just hasn't worked out.

He hasn't been the same since the 2011 playoffs..

Kobe was awful, he was a big reason why they lost game. The playmaker role is just not his thing. He made some bad decisions, tried to force too many passes and as a result ended up with 8 turnovers. I don't have too big of a problem with him going 2/9, but you have to help your team in other ways. He just couldn't do anything. Defensively he was constantly matched up with the other teams weakest player like Novak. That's understandable.

Another thing, Mike D'antoni's coaching was another factor that contributed to the loss. 28 minutes was too much. Especially since he was ineffective. I get that he's trying to keep him out there to make something happen but it cost the Lakers the game. He should have had between 15-20 minutes. I don't know if they would have won or not, but Xavier Henry was on fire and there was no reason to take him out for Kobe in the 4th.

Well, I wasn't expecting much out of Kobe tonight, but I do think he needs to get acclimated and incorporated FAST. The West this season is merciless, and the Lakers are already a couple of games out of the 8th seed. They can't afford to lose 4-5 in a row. They've got a tough home game against Phoenix on Tuesday and then a brutal four-game road trip over the next week.

After Phoenix on Tuesday, the Lakers will play 7 of their next 9 games on the road, and every single one of them except for the Jazz is a team hovering around early playoff contention. We'll know a lot more about how legitimate this Lakers team is over the next 10 games.

Yeah, physically he looked pretty good. Just a lot of rust.

He looked really slow and had like no lift tho. That's a concern. I think he'll be fine but I didn't expect THAT much rust.

He was moving good and looks confident. Didn't seem to have the ups though. Not sure that will be an issue, however.

MDA is terrible. He needed to work Kobe in slowly. Way too many mins for his first game back. Dude has been practicing for like a week

The takeaway from tonight is this:

Kobe might not have played well, but he indirectly started a #movement. For that I salute him
