Thoughts?

December 8th is the day.

The Lakers and Kobe Bryant posted a video on their respective Facebook pages Friday announcing the return of Bryant.

The video, titled “Season of Legends”, continues building the already crazy hype around Bryant’s inevitable return from his torn Achilles.

The Lakers play the Toronto Raptors at STAPLES Center on Sunday and, according to the video below, expect to have #24 back in the lineup.

It's be nice to see him go off and score 60 plus.
He'll only play about 12 mins.. so... 20 points?

jerellh528
12-06-2013, 06:29 PM
He said he'll only play if he can hit the ground running, no restrictions including minutes. So I'm assuming he will play full starter minutes, maybe not a huge workload like last year but probably around 30 mins.

On the contrary, it'll take a huge hit in terms of the old basketball timer fans and aficionados as Kobe is the last of a dying breed. The last real man left among a league of young boys.

Also, the next best player ever is around the corner, not the next Kobe. He is the last of a dying breed. Not saying he's the best, just saying another like him isn't coming along.

I've never been mistaken for a Kobe fan (well, in 3rd grade I did love him), but come on now. Things are way more fun when he's around. The league doesn't need him or anything, but it's still more fun with him. There's always an intriguing story line with him.

You said the league would be "better off without him". That's HUGELY different than the league not "needing" him. It doesn't "NEED" him at this point, but it's better off with him for sure

Plus, *******s make for good narratives and stories. Hence, good for the league. People are deeply invested in players they hate...and Kobe brings plenty of that attention to the table.

Seriously, without Kobe for me so far, all I have seen from the NBA so far is two stupid Lebron commercials (you know the ones) and surprise disappointments from the Nets and Knicks (no offense).

Sure the NBA does not NEED Kobe, but it also doesn't need Lebron or Durant either. NBA for me is a lot more fun or at the very least, more interesting to watch with Kobe around.

I hope he is 100%. Watching Kobe go for 40 every night will be a blast again. That season he averaged 35 and dropped 81 was by far my favorite Kobe season. I usually dislike him and the Lakers with a passion, but the NBA hasn't been the same without him. I feel like Mike D will unleash him these next few years. I say let him take 25 shots a game and go out in a blaze of glory.

I think early on at least, that should be his main priority. Obviously still looking to score, but I'm not sure the best thing right off the bat is him just coming in and completely taking over offensively/scoring-wise.

Doubt he's throwing 22-12-8 out there this soon, but who knows?

Agreed. But Kobe was receptive to a minute restriction and taking it a bit easy to start off with...I don't think hes gonna risk having a setback after the all the work he put in. I am pretty sure he is going to ease into it slowly.

Kobe can get 20 ppg at will I believe he can still score 25ppg he's ****en Kobe Bryant the closest thing to jordan! Pretty much his stay line is the same besides his assist. But he actually has shooters this year just like lebron so his assist should go up to 7-8 a game maybe more, he's shown that he's capable of averaging 22-10-7 he did it for like a month last year

I love the Lakers fans that forget Kobe is 35-years-old. Age catches up with everyone, even Kobe.. especially after a huge injury.

For fans to clamor that Kobe is going to be going 22-10-7 at 35-years-old in lesser minutes coming off an injury is crazy. While I do think he may pass more..

18 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds is much more realistic.

Yeah, maybe slightly higher will be his ceiling, but that's pretty much it in reality.

It's funny reading some of the replies in the forums about how he looks done lol... I mean he hasn't played ball in 8 months and has practiced for a week coming off the worst possible injury you can have at that age as a basketball player lol.

Need to give him some time. Kblo in the Lakers forum mentioned something pretty relevant.

Dirk came back last year and had an extremely slow start from an injury that isn't half this bad. I think Dirk's 1st 3 games he put up like 7 ppg on 32% shooting

Agree but to be expected as well , still has no legs under him , will take some time to get his conditioning and stamina built back up as well as his lift . It has to start somewhere and this is a good first step from the long way back , he looked somewhat tentative and was over passing just a bit .

Right now he is just trying to find his way in this offense and get used to playing with some of his new team mates , in a month or so he will have a better idea of what he actually has in his tool box and how he can best make use of his talent's in regards to this team .

Offensively i really did'nt expect that much from him his first game back but he did show signs that the willingness is still there if the legs and conditioning currently are not , good first step and welcome back Kobe .

Most passes were way too high, on the other side, besides Kobes passing, all others didn't pass the ball much better. You saw the entire game that there are lots of guys on court who couldn't catch and/or handle the ball.

That's true. it took him 10-15 games at least to become decent agian. He got back into shape after the ASG.

With Kobe, there's nothing to worry about or did anyone really expect him to score 30 points, as it wouldn't mean nothing, just like Nique did?

I was expecting a game like today, and a few more will follow. This is a guy who plays basketball pretty much every day of his life. Dude couldn't do anything for 8 months... That's worse than MJ taking time off, because at least MJ was still in shape from playing baseball.

Agree with you though, it'll take around 15 games for him to get normal.

Yes he was, especially on offense. He seemd to be afraid of failure at the one, first, fast break when he passed it and was in advantage (he was ahead of his defender). You could also see it during his shots, when he first pump faked it twice before he let it off, while Gasol boxed out his opponent. His drive was fine, his quickness actually surprised me, also he could change directions pretty well too... he was just afraid of (public) failure to go up on offense. On defense it's been better. I don't know if he still cannot or if it's just a lack of trust in his body yet. He didn't dare. Wait till he does. It'll be back, maybe not as we used to but it'll come back.

Same about his shot. Some too weak, others too strong. Going a step back for adjustment, missing it again. Airball, brick, top of the rim... Trying to get it adjustet trhough his FT's, missing the first one too. It's been rust, as another guy said. Nothing to worry about.

He looked noticeably fat, and even he admitted it after the game that right now, he is at 225 with 7% body fat. Last yr, he was at 205 at about 5%. That is a huge discrepancy.

I don't think you can call someone at 7% "fat"

27 minutes is way too much. He was very bad to say the least.

When you add "to say the least" you're implying that in reality he was much worse than just "very bad" and I don't think that's true. He was rusty and didn't play well, and he looked very bad. But for that to be you saying that that's the least, then that means you think that this was one of worst basketball performances by any player ever and that's not true. So just say he was very bad.

Big difference from last year.

But it doesn't make him fat. He's just heavier.

When you add "to say the least" it implies I could actually go on with how bad he played, but it was his first game so theres no point in pointing out his awful passing and shooting touch.

Being too critical of Kobe is doing too much. Come talk to me about how he is playing in a few more weeks.

Being too critical of Kobe is doing too much. Come talk to me about how he is playing in a few more weeks.

He's still doing better than anybody of us or how many NBA games have we all logged in our careers and then coming back right from rehab, playing our first game of the season at age 35, with a body worn out like having played for 20 years?

He had 9 points on worse shooting, just like Rubio or a guy named Gay who's shooting much more. Or like tons of other current NBA players with a huge following behind.

He had 8 TO's, surely will have a few more games with lots of it like 5, 6 here and there in some games, so this might continue for a while, what's no big surprise, but he also had like 8 rebounds and a few assists which could and will get easily up.

So... soon, we're already at 12-18 points and 8 - 8 in a couple games. That's statwise not so far away from Grant Hill in his best years and almost 2/3 of LeBron in his peak... Statwise...but surely not in comparison to both in their agility, spectacular play, athleticism and so on.

So...that's not that bad at all.

Lakers should worry a lot more about Pau.

Just my opinion, a little more detailed, backing up yours, saying that we all shouldn't be too critical. Summing up a possible outlook.

Just shows how unbelievably strong and overboard the Kobe fan base gets. Its off the freaking charts!!!

^ This. I think the first few weeks we'll see "facilitator" Kobe. Triple double type numbers......

I get it, y'all think Kobe has a mutant healing factor like Wolverine so not only does he heal great, but he really doesn't age either.

Kobe will never average 7 assists

Get outta here. People were just being optimistic. Chill out with the unnessary antagonistic act. Had he had a better game, we wouldnt be hearing from. People hate the fact that Kobe has die hard fans.

He averaged 6 on two different occasions and has a carrer average of around 5. Why could he not average 7? Especially with the shooters the lakers have?

He's also averaged 40pts a game for longer stretches. He will never average 7 assts. He won't have the highest asst average of his career at this stage of it.

For people saying he's done, that's ridiculous, I doubt he ever gets his explosiveness back, but Kobe is still one of the most fundamentally sound players in the game with a deadly shot and a high basketball IQ... He'll be fine, as far as the turnovers, he hasn't played a game with like half of the players on the team... Those will go down.. I doubt his assists numbers are as high as 7... And I bet his efficiency dips a bit as well with maybe an increase of turnovers if he handles the ball as a point-shooting guard. People are nuts on this sites, on both sides

Yes but the optimism was laughably high. When your perfectly healthy, every year you loose something. When I see things like 24/12/5 for average, I just have to laugh super hard. I'm thinking half those numbers would be a great game for his return. Now I assume 82 was a joke, but some were expecting 50. Its just hilarious to me because, as a guy who doesn't jock Kobe to death, its easy to see how far gone some of these Kobe fans really are.

Generally speaking, I think every player has crazy fans, but seeing Kobe fans think 82 was a possibility, or that Kobe is going to average anything like 24/12/5, solidifies the Kobe fans at the number 1 spot for sure.

I honestly never even thought about any of this until I read through this today and saw what some of these fans of Kobe were saying. I thought it was a joke, seriously. Then when I saw that some did actually believe these things, I realized these guys are crazy.
