NEW ORLEANS -- There is Denzel Washington's speech in "Remember the Titans" and Gene Hackman's talk to his squad in "Hoosiers."

And then there's the postgame oration Jermaine O'Neal gave Tuesday after his improbable performance to lift the Warriors to a much-needed 102-101 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

"I keep telling these guys that trials and tribulations will build character for a true championship team," O'Neal said. "It may not look good all the time, but we keep fighting, we keep fighting. It doesn't matter who's on the court in a Warriors uniform, we always feel like we have enough. Hopefully these lessons we're learning early, all the injuries ... is teaching us a lesson. I truly believe at the end of the year, we're going to be rewarded for these lessons that we've learned."

Leave it to the 35-year-old, 18th-year veteran to lift the Warriors when they needed it most. The Warriors were without Andrew Bogut, suspended for a game for his role in the altercation with Portland on Saturday. Swingman Andre Iguodala (strained left hamstring) didn't make the trip. But O'Neal, a former All-Star turned backup center, pulled off a timely throwback performance.

He finished with 18 points and eight rebounds in his first game back after missing the previous four. He was out with a bruised right knee and strained right groin. O'Neal revealed Tuesday that he also had a sore wrist and a viral infection that left him barely able to speak Sunday.

But when the Warriors' needed buckets, he provided them, making 9 of 12 shots. His biggest came at the 2:12 mark, a putback that proved to be the eventual game-winner.

"That's why we went and got him," coach Mark Jackson said. "He plays similar defense as Bogut. He anchors our defense and is a presence in the post. He came ready to score. We missed Bogut, but Jermaine did an outstanding job at carrying us at times."

Adding to the inspirational performance by O'Neal was the reality it was inches from not happening.

New Orleans guard Eric Gordon, who had 16 points and had hit half his four 3-pointers, had a wide-open look for the game-winning 3. But it rolled around the rim and out.

Klay Thompson secured the rebound and dribbled out the clock, snapping a three-game losing streak.

"Hey, 9-6 is better than 8-7," Thompson said after totaling 22 points and a career-high-tying eight assists. "It may be only November, but these were wins you need throughout the season. You never know what will happen down the road. But in March and April, you need these wins."

The Warriors head to Dallas for a Thanksgiving Eve showdown with the Dallas Mavericks and former Golden State star Monta Ellis. They certainly feel much better about themselves after Tuesday's nail-biter.

The Warriors looked as if they were headed for a fourth straight loss, having squandered a 15-point lead and trailing 77-76 to start the fourth quarter.

The game was tied at 93 inside of four minutes left, and the Warriors, instead of folding as they had in three losses, summoned some of the fight that led to their 8-3 start to the season.

O'Neal hit a jumper, and after Anthony Davis missed a dunk, Thompson drilled a 3-pointer to put Golden State up 98-93 with 3:09 left.

Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday answered with a 3-pointer, cutting the Warriors' lead to two.

David Lee followed with two free throws, but Davis responded by converting a three-point play inside -- catching a lob from Holiday as he'd done multiple times in the game. Davis was fouled on the play, and his free throw cut the Warriors' lead to 100-99 with 2:25 left.

O'Neal gave the Warriors a three-point lead with a put back, then Davis dunked home a missed jumper to make it a one-point game again.

Needing a bucket with inside a minute left, the Warriors went back to O'Neal. But he missed the fadeaway, giving the Pelicans the ball with 22.9 seconds left. Golden State didn't play great defense, as no one covered Gordon after Holiday drove to the basket.

But this night, they didn't need to be perfect. They were fortunate.

"This team has enough," O'Neal continued. "The difference I think with this team and my Indiana team ... everybody really loves each other. When you have a group that loves each other, and has no envy about anything we're doing, the sky's the limit. I keep telling these guys, do not let this moment pass us by."

But how well does Monta handle a rim-protection machine like Bogut? Andrew must have 70-80 pounds on Ellis with a commensurate body size advantage. In the back court Klay is a pretty good defender and he's got 4 inches on Monta.

Expect Monta to score but I doubt he'll go off for 37 like a week ago. I think the wild card is Novitski.

Monta will score 18... and also be stuffed at least 3 times

Monta normally grills us doesn't he? Pretty sure we've played Ellis 3 times since trading him and the Bucks won all 3 pretty easily...

And now he's on an even better Mavericks team. This one's gonna be tough. I think we're the better defensive team. Just have to slow down Ellis/Dirk and make sure Carter doesn't make too big of an impact off the bench. We should sign Stephen Jackson for one game just to defend Dirk  Draymond will defend him well I guess.
