View Full Version : Will we ever see someone dunk from the three point line?

In the future with advanced training, nutrition, etc., do you think so? Will a higher power allow it?

Predict a year this will happen.

I'm not going to say it's totally impossible, but I"m going to say it's extremely, extremely unlikely. You're talking about a player jumping more than 8 feet further than the free throw line, which is already a nearly impossible feat for most players in the league. It would have to take an Olympic-level leaping athlete to achieve that feat, and even then, I'm not sure there's a human on this planet who could jump that far with a running start.

Athletes will continue to get better and better...but I doubt it.

23.9 is the distance I believe. To put it in context, the world record long jump is just over 29 feet. Those guys don't at all jump with the height needed to be able to dunk 23.9 feet into their jumps...at all. I think we're a ways off from seeing anyone even getting terribly close.

Predicting a year is pointless, as bholly said. I'll say that I think it someday could happen, but it's not gonna be for a VERY long time...like, the time span of which that has me more worried about whether basketball as we know it will still be in existence than anything else.

if it happens 100 years from now, it'll be the distance of the old college 3 point line, 20 feet, the high school 3 pointer, that could happen. james white dunked from about 17 feet. it will never happen from the current nba 3 point line

i'll predict in the year 2136, someone will dunk from the high school 3 point line, 20 feet(i'm probably nuts here though, but james white makes me think it could someday happen). but from 23.9 feet, no

That brings up something interesting. If not dunking imagine the distance somebody can have with even something such as a lay-up.

Evolution takes millions of years so we'll never see it...Humans are more likely to go extinct than to see the day when someone can dunk from a three point line.

Without the use of robotic implants or some serious gene therapy I don't think it will ever happy. Some people mentioned evolution, evolution is based on need, there is no need for the body to develop that ability so even through evolution (which would take hundreds if not thousands of years) it probably wouldn't happen because the body would have no need to develop that ability for survival.

torocan
11-18-2013, 03:21 PM
I doubt it.

Though I seem to recall Mike Powell (world record holder, long jump, 29 3/4) said that he could do a dunk from a step or two inside the 3 point line. Still, he would need a very long run, and it's hard as heck to do while dribbling, and we're talking an olympic record class long jumper.

I think 20 feet would be at the edge of human possibility. 24 feet? That's a long, long way.

You'll see it when gravity stops having it's effect on the earth. Until that happens it won't happen so the real answer here is never. The best athletes in the NBA can barely dunk from the free throw line, if they can even do that.
