View Full Version : Amar'e Stoudemire: Most overpaid player in NBA history

Amar'e is set to make $21,679,893 this year.

He's avg. 4 points 2 rebs per game.... and it doesn't look like he's going to improve.

WS/48: -0.171

WS: -0.1

Since he signed that ridiculous contract with the Knicks in 2010, he's only given them one good year,(2010-2011) out of 4. Last year he was effective for the time he played but a small sample size due to only playing 29 games.

Until he completes this contract, he still hasn't passed Jermaine O'Neal's $165M lifetime.

Those guys could at least still play without being a complete negative impact on the team.

Amare has been completely useless since he's been signed, he had 2 great months of basketball, and it's been all down hill from there.

Arenas was bad, but Amar'e signed a bigger contract so because of that, combined with his uselessness, he's the most overpaid.

Gil's contract was like 18.5M/year, Amare's is almost 20M/year

At least with Amar'e when he got that contract he wasn't coming off of flat performances in the Playoffs.

Joe Johnson got a huge contract for not doing much.

Arenas could at least spot up and shoot.

Amare has nothing to offer, on top of that I have to listen to idiot during his interviews talk likes he actually believes he's smart.

To be fair though, if it weren't for injuries, he'd still be a 15-8 type player.

Obviously the injuries have plagued him, however I honestly think the Melo trade hurt his status on the team and the team overall, prior to that they were STACKED and it didn't matter if Amar'e was out, they could compensate. Once that trade for Melo was done, the grind to replace all that talent that was lost and it put them at a bad position to succeed.

They were not STACKED. They had a few good young players. People keep blaming Melo, but the Knicks were struggling a while before that trade. They one at least one big game before the trade (against the Heat), and the last team they beat was the Hawks, but they weren't on fire. Amar'e AND Felton, who were huge in their first couple of months on the team, started struggling (Felton played too many minutes and it took it's toll on his body).

It's also funny people bring up the pieces they traded and Amar'e has played more games this season than two of those players combined (0).

In case you missed that.

The Magic have been paying him about 20 mil a year the past 4 seasons. A team he was a terrible bench player on for about half a season. So Amare's is very bad, but it isn't touching Gilbert's.

So glad the Suns didn't give in with his demands for a guaranteed contract.
Still though, I understand why NY did it. They will also get another chance to build a solid roster around Melo after next season when they get back like 70mil in cap space.

do you realize amare was a beast in the 04/05 playoffs? guy was putting up prime shaq numbers. too bad for the surgeries but who in the knicks org authorized the max? dantoni/dolan. you cant blame a player for collecting his money, in amare's case his disability checks

This is why Gilbert is my hero.

Also, Gilbert is the winner of this convo. He's the worst contract ever because his antics off the court were horrendous. Amare is at least a good teammate.

That being said, Mark Madsen was good teammate, and he played for free

Crackadalic

Amare hasn't played basketball games until oct. He is beyond rusty now and with the way Woodson rotation is he doesn't know how to play in this no name system

With that said he still doesn't fit this roster as currently constructed

Who's blaming Amare? We're discussing his contract vs. his production. We all know the drop off was due to injury and that the injury was known before the signing of the contract. None of that changes the context of this thread.

This is why you don't sign guys that Phoenix doesn't want. Amare, Nash, Hill, Barbosa, Shaq etc have all went on to suck and be bad signings/trades by other teams.

Only one that it has worked out for in the past 10 years is Shawn Marion.

When Amare signed that contract he came to NY and lit it up. Then they traded for Melo, and he became a recluse.

Not sure if Amare is entirely to blame here.

No.
Amare didn't always stink. He was highly effective for them, then Melo came, and Amare took a back seat. His injury (re-injury) came after the fact. (I believe?).

They paid him to save the franchise from obscurity and make the Knicks a desirable team to play for again. They knew his injury history, it was well documented. Money well spent.

His body is telling him to retire. Watching him play nowadays it's clear he's got nothing left in the tank and is just draining money at this point.

Shame cause he was one of my favorite players in PHX.
