View Full Version : Tracking the NBA Championship Belt..

Started from an idea on reddit and grantland wrote an article about it: http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/80696/introducing-the-nba-regular-season-championship-belt

Basic format:
1. NBA Champion from last season has the belt to start the reg season.
2. If the team loses, the belt is passed over to winning team.
3. Process repeats throughout the season.

This is how the belt was transferred for the 2012-13 season: http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2013/1101/grant_calendar1_1152x1119.jpg
Clippers finished the regular season with the title but 3 teams held it longer - Thunder, Indiana, Knicks in that order.

I can continuously update this post if you guys think it's a fun idea.

2013-14 NBA Championship Belt owners:
1. Heat - 1 game (Bulls)
2. Sixers - 3 games (Heat, Wizards, Bulls) http://i.imgur.com/pScygtc.jpg
3. Warriors - 2 game (Sixers, Wolves)
4. Spurs - 1 game (Warriors)

CURRENT HOLDER OF CHAMPIONSHIP BELT:

San Antonio Spurs

The only path the championship belt will take from now on is from Michael Carter Williams, to the league and back every year.

There's also a twitter account doing it - @NBATitleBelt
Honestly, my main reaction is that I'm upset that I didn't come up with it.
If I had've invented it I would've made it so you can only win the belt by beating the champ in their house - that way you get longer reigns and the whole thing won't get old so quickly - but I'll still take it how they're doing it.

Really dumb..The only way the belt is taken is through a playoff series

The entire point is that it isn't meaninful - it's a silly thing that is fun to track. It's not supposed to be a serious representation of anything.

I think I'd be interested in seeing this at the allstar break and once the playoffs starts...I don't think I'd be interested every time in changes throughout the year though.

Interesting concept.

Why? It pretty much has to be a regular season thing - the whole point is it's a fun thing that can change hands any time and literally any team could win it. It's just a fun thing for the fans to track rather than something that actually means anything.
In other words, this is the time of the season where it's most fun. Once we get down into the playoff race where every game takes on a higher perceived importance, a silly thing like this sort of pales in comparison. Once you get to the playoffs it's completely redundant - whoever won the belt is exactly the same as whoever won the last game in that series, and it inevitably goes to the actual champ, so it becomes completely meaningless given we already track those things.

I love this.

Battle for the belt tonight! Golden State vs. Minnesota!

Sixers had the belt for the longest this year. Suck it! And we will be coming for it again (if we ever get the chance)!

Exactly. Plus this gives teams that aren't anywhere near the playoffs, something to cheer for. Any team could potentially hold the title if they get the right matchup/have a good game.

Also pretty exciting to see who ends up with it at the end and who has it for the longest.

I'll keep updating the first post then!

And the Warriors hang on to retain the belt!

Next challenger: San Antonio... How fitting. You know they're gonna be hungry for it.

Original I like it...but I would also put a rule, you get the belt only if you beat the current holder at home

That's how I would've done it too. Too late now, though - this is a thing outside of PSD so if PSD want to change it it's going to have to be a completely separate thing.

Golden State vs. San Antonio for the "belt" Friday.

Also, I'll bet that the Bobcats end with it lol

They actually had it for a game last year (or they would've if it was a thing back then). They would've had it 3 times in their history, and lost it the very next game every single time.

With Curry out, nobody scoring in the last two minutes, the Spurs TAKE THE BELT over the Warriors in a narrow 76-74 win. DYNASTY baby.

FYI: I'll update the post/bump this thread myself only when the belt changes hands.

Sixers are #1 contenders, hosting the Spurs who're on the second night of a back-to-back. Let's do this thing.

OKC (4 games) -> POR
POR (2 games) -> DAL
DAL (1 game) -> SAC
SAC now down 25 at home to the league-worst Jazz late in the 3rd. The NBA Championship Belt is the best.

Would have made rooting for the end of the season more exciting, coming from a Knicks fan.
