Cavaliers rookie forward Anthony Bennett, the top pick in this year's NBA draft, has asthma and sleep apnea.

Cleveland coach Mike Brown revealed Bennett's conditions Thursday night before the Cavs hosted the Detroit Pistons in an exhibition game. Bennett's asthma was not widely known and obviously did not prevent the Cavs from taking the former UNLV star in June's draft.

Bennett has had some breathing issues during workouts and in preseason games, and him being sometimes winded had been attributed to him not being able to work out as much this summer after undergoing shoulder surgery in May. But Brown said Bennett also deals with asthma and wears a mask at night for his sleep apnea.

"It's a culmination of a lot of things," Brown said. "The shoulder, he's been out for a while, he's got asthma. We're throwing a lot at him. He's probably never played this hard against this competition in his life. He's got sleep apnea and some other things. He likes to stay up late."

The 6-foot-8, 259-pound Bennett averaged 10 points and 6.3 rebounds in his first three NBA preseason games. He's coming off the bench for Brown, and made his first shot -- a 3-pointer -- against the Pistons and followed that up with a breakaway dunk.

Brown said Bennett's breathing issues are noticeable.

"It's been tiring to watch him because every time I watch him he's (gasping)," Brown said. "It makes me tired, so I try not to look at him. I tell him, `If you need a sub, just tell me. Otherwise I'm not going to look at you."

Bennett was not in Cleveland's locker room during the period it was open for media members

I remember vs. the Magic when he went crazy in the fourth and he got back to the bench, the commentators were laughing about how his teammates were all giving him high fives and chest bumps and all he wanted to do was get a breath and sit down. Asthma could definitely be a problem playing the 3/4 every night, but he's going to have to find some way to make it work out.

I could not believe this guy went no. 1 in the draft. He'll be remembered as one of the worst #1 overall picks in nba history, alongside guys like Olowokandi and Kwame Brown.

I was as skeptical as anyone about the pick until actually watching him in the preseason and he really does have potential to be a pretty good player in this league, not great, but pretty good.

He has all the tools to do so and hopefully he's learns to cope with this so it doesnt hold him back any because he definitely has the potential.

To me he has more athleticism than milsap and dudes arms look super long. Also, sleep apnea is no joke. Both me and my pop have it. You dont really get Rem sleep you need for rest unless you sleep with this machine. You snore loud and breathe crazy i know he prolly got kyrie and them mad on those long flights

I don't see much of Bennett as a pro. Depending on how he adjusts to the pace of the NBA due to his size will determine whether or not he will be a bust, but I don't see an all star in him.

He's not in game shape so right now asthma is a bigger issue. Not comparing in any way but Dennis Rodman, Dominique Wilkens, and Isaiah Thomas are all former players with asthma.

As a Cavs fan I wasn't a fan of the pick. I wanted Oladipo. That being said, it's way too early to cast Bennett as a bust, especially in a weaker draft where 7 different players could've gone #1. He's shown some promise, but it's preseason so I won't read much into it.
