Thunder Dan for Dan Majerle

Houdini of the Hardwood for Bob Cousy

The Logo for Jerry West

Air Jordan for MJ

The Glyde for Clyde Drexler

The Big Dipper for Wilt Chamberlain

Chocolate Thunder for Daryl Dawkins

There was a guy who played preseason for the Rockets named Thomas Hamilton who was nicknamed "Two Sandwiches" for his immense girth. I had to google his real name because all I remember was his nickname.

There are some guys who people totally forget their actual name like:

Magic Johnson

Bimbo Coles

Moochie Norris

Muggsy Bogues

Blue Edwards

Doc Rivers

Mookie Blaylock

I always also loved "The Dunking Dutchman" for Ric Smits. And "Dr. Dunkenstein". I am slipping on that guys actual name. I think it is something Griffin.

Edit: Daryl Griffith was Dr. Dunkenstein!

Agreed - it is by far the best nickname in the league. One of the best of all time.

I just wish Chuck or someone like him would come out and coin 'The Green Goblin' for Rondo so it would stick. That needs to be his nickname.

Nicknames are such a lost art in today's NBA, they peaked after the 80s/90s.

This.

I can't believe that black mamba comes up under 'cool' nicknames and not 'painfully uncool' nicknames. He gave it to himself! He sat at home and spent time thinking about it and came up with a 'cool' sounding name for other people to call him, and then actually went out and told people to call him that - like a 12 year old who looks back once he's an adult and cringes in shame, only he's already an adult and still thinks it's 'cool'. He gave the nickname to himself!

He actually stole it from Kill Bill Vol. 2. And the character in there who had that nickname was a middle-aged woman.

AK-47 is the best current nickname. Novacaine is interesting. I liked Agent Zero, who hasn't been mentioned yet. Most nicknames these days lack in style and imagination.

I really liked the "Rim Reaper" nickname NBA TV crew used to use for Blake Griffin. Was Shaq ever called "The big diesel"? I just remember Diesel by itself. The Big Aristotle is all I remember for Shaq where it was multiple names.
