Can't agree. The Sox first 4 hitters are pretty solid vs top pitching, but the the bottom 5 are vulnerable - very much so. If the Rays hurlers avoid throwing balls/walking that lower group, the amount of runs we are going to score is going to be limited.

The way to beat the Rays is to get into the pen. If those starters average 7 IP per game, we are in deep trouble.

If we win the whole thing I would guess now that we'd look back at this as the toughest Series.

I have to agree with some of the statements around here. The Rays starting pitching is really good. This is the match up I would have like to have the seen the Red Sox avoid. Darn the Rangers and Indians.

It's going to be a long series if the Red Sox can't get to the Rays starters and allow them to get deep into the games. I refuse to watch Fernando Rodney do the whole bow and arrow thing (after he gives up two hits, walks a batter, and escapes a bases loaded jam) in Fenway Park or in that silo that the Rays play in.

I predict that the Red Sox will win in 4 or 5.

I like the Red Soxs in 3 games. I know the Rays play us tough, I know the past. Call it a hunch. I think game #1 will be the toughest, but I see us moving on in short order.

I know the layoff, I know the Rays have been rolling, but the Red Soxs are the better TEAM and have set themselfs up nicely.

Ortiz is having a rough year vs lefties as well. Price is the most difficult matchup we could face, except perhaps Kershaw. Game 1 feels like a must win, otherwise we have to beat Price once. Beating Price is going to likely require a terrific pitching performance by Lackey or Lester.

If the offense is on their game we should be able to grind out Moore and Cobb. Moore did great against us this year, but it never felt like he was in total control like Price. He's vulnerable, and his command is shaky.

Yeah, you can't be too afraid of a starter who walks 4.5 batters per nine innings. Gotta be patient against him.

Game 4 is Archer and then Price or Moore would start game 5 if there were one.

I think you guys can pull off a win against Moore, he has been a little wild and Yankees would and should have knocked him around last week if they had some real hitting.

Everyone in that rotation has been pitching like an ace for the rays, aside from Hellickson. Will be an interesting series to watch.

Archer will go in game 4 but he won't have a long leash. 2 years ago Tampa faced a similar situation with Hellickson. Hellickson was clearly our 4th best starter and he was on a really short leash against Texas. I think Hellickson went 4 and Maddon pulled him for Moore on 3 days rest as soon as Hellickson got hit. If I remember correctly, Moore came in and was great for 2 innings.

I expect the same thing to happen in game 4. Archer will get the ball, but I would only expect him to go 3-5 innings. As soon as he gets hit, Moore will be brought in for 2/3 innings. If Archer is dealing, Joe will keep him in. I like the idea of Archer for 3-5 and then Moore for 2-3 in game 4.

You mean can't? Price is going to go game 5 regardless. I don't need an act of nature to give us any advantage. If they beat us congrats to them, they'll go far. I just hope it's Price completing the game, not that douche. If I gambled I would bet on them winning the WS.

Rays have been playing great lately. Sox are flat footed by comparison.

Game 1 tells the tale. Game 1 winner takes Series, which only a brutal MR performance in say two games could reverse.

did they ever find out why Myers let the ball drop bc if someone yelled something then the immediate reaction would be for Jennings to look to the bullpen?

redsoxknicks
10-04-2013, 11:48 PM
He said honestly that he saw Jennings out of the corner of his eye so he backed off to let Jennings get it. He didn't hear anyone call it; he just backed off thinking Jennings was there.

And, yes, if someone had called it, Jennings would have motioned or at least said something post-game. Some were quick to call it on the Red Sox bullpen, but there was no indication we had anything to do with it, thankfully.

I liked Myers from the start. His first game was in Fenway, and he was very respectful and in awe of starting out in such an historic place. He is a real talent, and seems an equally good person.

ESPN.com Boston (I think) reported that Lester called Ned Yost last off-season to see if the possible trade rumblings of him for Myers were true, and Yost confirmed that KC was trying for him.

Wonder if it got that far for Cherington, or not.

Lester has been crucial for us, but as we all know he had been struggling since September 2011, and last year voiced that it may be time to leave Boston. It would be interesting to know if or how serious Ben was about this trade.

Win tonight, got to have it. Can't go to Tampa tied at 1-1.

If we win today the series is pretty much ours. This is the most difficult matchup of the series. I hope they don't fall into the trap with Price. Don't be hyper aggressive because he's known to throw a lot of strikes. Otherwise it will be the 9th inning and his pitch count will be 80.

redsoxknicks
10-05-2013, 05:10 PM
Price is a high-quality pitcher, and as such he also gets some generous calls. The strike zone will be important, and the adjustments made. The usual grinding at-bats are more difficult with Price.

These are such fun games. All the better to beat Tampa Bay, but we have to go through Price to do that.
