We talk a lot about tanking and I often see things as just bad or poorly run. I'd be curious to see your thoughts on how you judge the difference.

Toward the end of the season you'll see some bad teams sitting out their best players with the famous "tendenitis." Resting starters, playing guys that haven't seen daylight all season, and bringing up guys from the D league. That's when you know the tank is on!

Tanking is tanking, bad management is management that is bad. That's about the best way I can differentiate.

If they're way overpaying for free agents, trading away draft picks, and not getting anywhere, they're mismanaged. If they're sitting starters, trading quality players for draft picks and rookie scale contracts, and cutting salary, they're probably tanking. In short, look at more than just the W/L record.
