Is it just me or does it look like he has been on a steady diet of Budweiser and cheeseburgers.

i dont think he's out of shape.

is he chizzled? no. never really has been.

he doesnt look "fatter" or "chunkier" than normal.

hes a big dude. 6'4'', 220...

im guessing the rockets will manage his minutes a little better this year as well

He will lose some weight within' a month anyways.

His style of play isn't dependent on him not having a gut.

He's always seemed overweight for a basketball player.

You're not an athlete making multi-million dollars are you? Not sure anyone cares if you look like precious.

He`s the exact copy of P. Pierce for me, he resembles his game and has his type of body

Always looking like his overweight

I always thought he was overweight in college, hence why I didn't think he would be a very good NBA player (missed that one...). But he does look pretty sloppy in those pictures. If he is expecting training camp to get him in shape, he needs to be prepared for the possibility of some strained muscles and tendons.

well it is concerning, because it means he wasn't really working on his game this summer. If he was, it wasn't at full speed and at optimal condition. It's one thing to take a month off after a long season, and then slowly ramp up your workouts. It's another to be 23 and put on a gut by the preseason.

Which is better:

Not picking up a basketball all offseason ala Jamal Crawford/Stephen Jackson

or not caring what you eat all offseason ala the Gasols/Andre Miller

Who did you want them to draft BTW?

His game is very similar to the euro style...not coincidentally most euro players aren't very fit either. At the same time if I were a coach and if any player, yet alone one of my star players, showed up to training camp looking like him, I would be pissed.

Harden will get in shape,he's young,he can lose his kgs in a short amount of time. That pic is hilarious anyway.

The Thunder? At that point, they were set at PG/SF, and there really wasn't any good big available, so I figured it would be Reke. I watched Harden at ASU, and what I learned from my mistake is, trying to apply patient dribble drive players in college to their pro level is a complete fail. The college game is all packed in with no intelligence. Harden didn't stand a chance with his game to look dominant.

neither are optimal to me. I am not saying you need to stay in peak physical condition all year round, that is not healthy for the level of endurance needed for the sport. But you are throwing extreme examples out there. The truth lies in between.

These guys arent being paid to look aesthetically pleasing. Not everyone can look like dwight howard, he will be fine.

Yea but its a stark contrast to how Kobe/Wade have approached this offseason (and plenty others).
Wade lost like 15lbs this off season

Even Stan Van Gundy can dribble a basketball. Harden will be fine.

Look at how much bigger his arms are though. He probably told training staff he wanted to come into the league more physically powerful next season. Just because he has a gut doesn't mean he hasn't been working out, it just means he's gaining weight. And, I really hate to bring this up, but if he was on a cycle it would make sense timeline wise for his bulking phase to stop and his cutting so he comes back stronger, after he's cut he shouldn't loose any speed or quickness. Even if he's not on a cycle it still makes sense to gain muscle and lost fat at different times. He could just be putting in extra hours at the gym and consuming a **** ton of calleries planning to maintain most of his new muscle but to drop the fat.
