View Full Version : Who got the best Penetration?!

I always laugh when Tony Parker is always saying "I just try to get penetration" when referring to him beating his defender off the dribble and then either a) scoring at the rim with a layup before defenders can converge on him or b) passing to an open teammate for a high percentage shot.

Give me your top 5 list of players in NBA history who could penetrate a defense and get to the hole and score.

Probably Wade...when he wants to.

i'm biased but imo wade's the best of all time at this. in his prime he was as quick and agile as anyone, and had more size and strength to finish then most quick guards. his array of circus shots and the way he split doubles on the way to the rim was and still can be ridiculous.

It's difficult, there are a lot of players that penetrate very well. I just want to mention Mark Price. He splitted defenses like a champ.Just look at him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sua9u318wGo

Price was also the master of that running one legged jump shot going right at the basket. I tried to copy that move for like 2 summers and could never get it. Its like a tear drop with range. Great move

Wade
Jordan

Iverson
LeBron

Prime Wade was the most exciting at this because of how acrobatic he was on his way to the hole.

#1 Dr J.
I got to TV-watch a lot of his games. It seemed like nobody could ever stop him from getting to the rim; and once there, no one ever had more moves. And on top of that, his movement was SO fluid. I am not a fan of isolation ball; but I never tired of him taking on individuals and entire teams AND beating them to/at the rim.

Before him, I used to say exactly the same thing about Elgin Baylor.

Vince Carter
Jason Kidd
Steve Nash who'd be in my top 5 for sure

Parker should start any list. Anyone who is his size and is a league leader in points in the paint during his prime is the answer.

Currently james harden, parker and kyrie irving make it look too easy. Westbrook and lawson are close behind. Lebron is more physical and melo, durant and kobe or more midrange/post up. Wades age has got to him but he used to be up there.

Hey BULLSFAN0810,
Why do you include Payton? Some examples? (I'm not disagreeing; would just like to see how you make your case).

"Young Jordan" reminds me of the year they played the Celts in the playoffs and the game he got his 63 points. Boston had one of the all-time great defensive teams; and MJ just ripped that TEAM to shreds. They tried everybody and every combination of them against him, and he still got to the rim at will, and all game long. They were NOT slow, they didn't make many mistakes; he was just other-worldly. When, afterwards Bird called him "God in a basketball jersey" (paraphrased), he got that exactly right.

How many slashers from the last 20+ years got to the hole because of the major leniency on carrying? Some of those guys showed they could get there period (Iverson, Jordan), but could Parker be the same slasher without those rules being rarely enforced? I don't know. Can't say he couldn't since he's allowed.

LeBron, he powers his way in, don't know if I'd consider him on this list.

Where'd you rank Pete Maravich at penetrating?

Maravich was just as likely to turn the ball over as he was to score or set someone up, so I don't hold him too high.

Hey Hawk,
If you're going to summarize it (or in any way show it to us); Thanx in advance. Did you see that game? It was astonishing how he "sliced and diced" them up; like he saw things no one else could see; and had gears no one else had. In a word, against him they were "powerless".

Iverson
Wade (Prime)
...
...

Soo the criteria is like, from outside(maybe from the 3pt line) into the rim?
Because I was going to put Prime Shaq in my list, I dunno if posting/powering the defender is to the Rim and score is a Penetration though. :D

I was 11. I watched it, but I didn't know what I was watching, outside me falling in love with Jordan despite my fathers anger towards him for that game/series. I have watched that game around 15 times since, and he was just straight up beast. Best player I have ever watched. By a mile.

Maybe deserves an HM, but he is/was known for dazzling crossovers, which isn't necessarily getting to the rack.
