How does this work? He will miss some games due to surgery. Will his suspension take place after he comes back to the team from surgery or while he is recovering??

NEW YORK -- New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith has been suspended without pay for five games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program, the league announced Friday.

Smith is recovering from offseason knee surgery and might not be ready for the beginning of the regular season.

The NBA says Smith's suspension will begin with the first game of the season for which he is eligible and physically able to play.

The Knicks re-signed Smith to a three-year contract worth approximately $18 million with a player option for the third year in July.

The 27-year-old averaged 18.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season, in which he won the league's Sixth Man of the Year award. He played an integral role in the Knicks' regular-season success but struggled mightily in the playoffs, making just 33 percent of his field goal attempts.

Anyway, 5 more games that Timmy Jr. can play. Getting a little tired of off-court J.R.

Why would the suspension occur while he's not playing? Jesus

There have been reports JR will be ready to go day 1. Even if he isn't, it'd be stupid for Knicks brass to say otherwise.

I disagree with the idea of suspending players for pot, but it is a rule, so it should be honored.

Thank God he didn't get suspended 5 games for every time smoked weed.

For some, smoking relieves pain ... or at least sends your thoughts off somewhere else in space to temporarily forget about the pain. This isn't about blaming his rehab, it's about the fact that it actually does have medicinal benefits.

Could not agree any more. But lets be real, he wasnt doing it to ease the pain of rehab. He was doing it recreationally, which is cool, but thats a lame excuse for him.

To get a 5 game suspension, a player has to fail 3 drug tests for pot during either the preseason or the regular season. No testing occurs in the offseason.

To be clear, JR Smith was NOT tested after his surgery. Period.

There's no doubt it was recreational use, but can't someone who smokes recreationally also then smoke it with the dual purpose of trying to relieve symptoms?

Lol ok? I think EVERYONE knows JR smokes weed, just to smoke it. It's not that serious.

More than half of the NBA probably smokes weed everyone once in a while.

His off the court nonsense screwed us during the playoffs and now back again. This idiot could have gotten a $50 million contract if he kept his head on for 3 months. What a joke. It drives me crazy to root for him.

....and because he could easily afford one of a million other remedies. Weed is prescribed for those with way worse issues than recovering from surgery

Who cares? It's weed.

If he was taking PED's or cooking meth I might have a problem with him, but smoking weed? Whatever.

The only problem would be if he was smoking it before games and playing stoned.

I here this excuse all the time...the injury didnt have any affect on his game...stupidity with the elbow and partying did though.

JR didnt use it as an excuse, so why bring it up? Seems like this excuse only comes up by fans when the player sucks, nobody said "JR was hurt, but played a good game against boston in game 2".

Besides no one even knew the extent to him being hurt at the time.

JR always manages to play bad, he isnt hurt every playoff.

Absolutely. How many write ups does your job allow you to have before you get fired?

Different jobs, different rules. Some jobs don't drug test at all.

Sigh. I mean on the bright side, it'll give him another 2 weeks to fully recover? Better now than the playoffs anyways. Can't really judge him for it, because at this point I don't even consider marijuana use that bad at all.

Marijuana addiction is a whole different story, but addictions of any kind are terrible and they don't even have to be drug related.

It's the offseason and he'll be out for a while anyways, kinda stupid they suspend him for that. Now, if he was doing this during the season or god forbid during/before the playoffs I would certainly be far more judgmental.

45% of the nba players smoke weed. 85% of them use to or tried it at least once. not to stereo type but if your a young black male that grew up in the hood and listens to rap or reggae. Its a very high chance you smoke weed however very low chance you smoke crack. If you or your parents were hippies same goes.
