View Full Version : Week 1: Seahawks @ Panthers

Finally here. We needed a thread.

The only aspect of this matchup that really worries me is the Seahawk pass rush vs. Cam Newton. OB Schoefield starting at Leo and really everywhere else on the line has been a little banged up or is lacking depth this week as well. Cam must be contained and really that little mismatch alone could be a huge influence on the game despite what appear to be Seahawk advantages pretty much everywhere else. The other important matchup will be pass pro against a pair of high quality ends Carolina will feature. Oh, and our old friend Tedd Ginn returning kicks (****!).

We'll be leaning more on the offense than usual this week with the d-line banged up, but there's no reason to believe Lynch, Wilson, and the receivers can't have a quality game. The Carolina front 7 is legit and Keuchly is a stud, but the Seahawks are able to do so many things it'll be hard for anyone to contain them. I especially expect a big day from Wilson exploiting a just okay secondary. On defense, Browner and Sherman completely dominated Carolina last season and I expect more of the same. As long as they can keep Cam from gouging them with big plays, it could be ugly for Carolina. That's a 6'5" 245 lb "if" though.

Some info from Pete Carroll yesterday:
Tate will return punts, Thurmond will fill in situationally.
Carpenter will not start, but will play.
As mentioned above, Schoefield will start at leo.
Browner will be a game time decision (hammy).

For those of you who don't remember...... Browner played a huuuuuge role in the CAR game last year. The Carpenter news intrigues me. Situational LG/RG?

I'm absolutely terrified by this game. No pass rush could really hurt us. Especially against Cam Newton.

Although, I'd like to ask this...

What does he bring to the table the Russell Wilson doesn't besides size? I love Cam and think he's a fantastic numbers QB but put he and Russell on the Hawks and I think the team may be better off with Wilson.

That being said, I think we will win it but I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see a loss.

Aside from the Giants there's no game I'm looking forward to more than this. Can't wait.

You did.

I don't think Carpenter could go a full game yet if he wanted to. He was gassed last week.

BB would be helpful in containing Cam, so yeah hope he plays.

Well for one, Cam can run between the tackles and also break tackles on the outside. Pete Carroll said this week, "our leos are almost as big as their quarterback."

That said, I'd take Russell no question for his accuracy, intelligence, and leadership.

Getting Carp back is going to be huge. Besides McQuistan's versatility, he's not very good. I've never really gotten that... It's like, "Oh well, you're pretty below average at LT, LG, RG, RT, so you have a lot of value to us."

As for Browner, he was huge in last year's game. Not only in the forced fumble that I've posted below, but during the whole game.

I'm glad you mentioned that, because this game scares the **** out of me also. On the road.... early game.... I think it's going to be a very ugly first half with us pulling away big time in the end.

Good win. Not a great game in many aspects but I'm glad they walked away with a win with so many guys nicked up and the O-line playing about as bad as we've seen them play in quite some time.

Russell was really good today and Doug Baldwin is a ****ing stud. Sherman dropped a possible pick six and Lynch earned every single yard he got. Lots of negatives with this game but a fair amount of positives and good signs.

Today was just a great illustration of the QB Russ is. The line was awful all day. Passing or running, they were getting no push and letting defenders by like it was nobody's business. I really wish we wouldn't have gone into the season with Giacomini starting. The best thing he did today was draw the penalty/ejection.

- Kearse looks good. Baldwin is money on 3rd. Tate after he catches the ball is an explosive RB.
- Besides Turbin's one big run, he looks pretty uninspiring. Always getting tripped up at the LOS.
- Jon Ryan is such an unsung hero. Field position was huge today.
- Kam disappeared today.
- Both lines looked pretty bad. Bennett and others were getting beat by their backup guards.
- I don't think we can survive against SF with Avril and Clemons out.

I think we need Mike Rob back

Why? Coleman looked good catching the ball. Not sure about the blocking, but no way I am giving him that blame. The line sucked.

I have honestly never liked our line. Russ threw out of the pocket more than anyone else last year. I am sure some of that is because he is a mobile guy, but he also had to run around way too much. It's early, but I could definitely see us upgrading at least one guard spot next year.

Ian.
09-08-2013, 08:44 PM
The fullback definitely wasnt the problem with the run game. Lynch just had no holes. At all.

One of the biggest (I think THE biggest) runs of the game came from Turbin and he had to abandon running up the middle when there was nothing there, so he swung out to the right.

The run blocking was abysmal

Just a guess but i think Turbin is the #2 back because they don't trust Michael to block yet.

I hope Michael eventually gets to be the #2 back nothing against Turbin but Michael adds a different element with his speed.

If everything falls in place I'd prefer Clem sits this Sunday (figuring Avril is back). Let Clemons have week two off, and three as well -- shouldn't need him against Jacksonville.

Hey, 49er fan here. Just wanted to say good luck and I cannot ******* wait for the game next week. I live up here near Seattle so I'll be surrounded by Seahawks fans. I really love this rivalry and I feel like we deserve this battle since the NFC West was a joke to the rest of the league for so long.

I watched the game last weekend, and if you'll permit me, I'd like to share a couple thoughts. 1, damn does Russell Wilson look good. I knew he was going to be good coming out of college but he is crazy good. That being said, your run game didn't look as good as normal and overall you were less dominant as a team to start than I thought.

That being said, if any of you watched the 49ers game the same could be said about us. Our run game was not clicking and we kept making stupid mistakes all game. I think both instances were a case of rust and acclimation to the new season. I expect both teams to be rolling when they play.

But anyways, Good Luck! (PS if you see a drunken skinny white guy at a bar in a Kaepernick Jersey please refrain from punching him as that is probably me).

Carp was awful.

Was disappointed we didn't see Michael once. S4E almost nailed what I was gonna say about Turbin. The guy hits the ground on contact every time.

Doug ****ing Baldwin.

Tate needs more touches. He's as hard to tackle as any receiver in the league.

Steve Smith yelling at his teammate was awesome.

35 pass plays, 26 rushes, the oline needs to get their **** together. Credit to the Panther defense, Lynch was a non-factor.

Pretty good job containing Newton. One sack though.

And yeah, Tate is crazy. I think it might be cool to give him runs out of the backfield like they do with Harvin. He looks like a RB when he has the ball in his hands.... likely because he was one.

Yeah Carolina has a legit front seven. Kuechly was causing a lot of trouble.

To be fair Carolina is about as tough on the interior as he'll see this season. They're deep too.

Well Carp gotta show us something against the 9ers.

I was reading something about Avril, Browner and Clemons being full goes for practice this week!

Losing Sopoaga was big for the 49ers.

Great recap by PFF. Derrick Coleman was their highest rated player, although Wilson gets the game ball. Good words on Baldwin too.

Saw this on PFF, seemed interesting

Marshawn Lynch averaged 6.2 yards per carry when running between the guards, but 0.5 yards per carry when running outside of the guards.

Run it up the gut!

It's all because of the read option.

That's ****ing horrible though.

I hate that we're getting away from the power running... That can't happen, especially this week.

:laugh2: Really? We're not getting away from anything. We were just straight ineffective.

We couldn't run the damn ball. Why would we keep running?

To keep the defense honest. You can't completely scrap it. I am ok with running the ball 45-50% even if it's not working

I don't see how running 26 times is getting away from the run.

It's definitely not the Seahawk game plan to pass the ball way more than they run.

By power running I mean give the ball directly to Marshawn and let him go straight up the middle and do what he does best. We barely did that at all against Carolina. Yes, I get that their front seven was feasting on our line/run game, but just look at what Alexander posted... That's because of too much read option and not enough straight up Beast Mode.

Wonder if they're still happy with the decision to give up Moffit.

And too much bad McQ and Carp. They really played badly.

He lost to Sweezy, so I doubt even now. He would have been at RG. I think he wanted out.

Lunch is definitely most effective up the middle. He is sting enough to break the tackles, but also quick enough to avoid them if needed.

He has been bottled up overall so far tho. But the line has a part in that for sure. Seems like he would bust out a 7-10 yarder, and then have two guys in his face before he even got a chance to make a move for the next two plays. Maybe we need to mix it up a little more. We are a running team, but we can't make it so the defense can play the run every time.

Not to mention they don't have to be worried about Sweezy doing stuff off the field like Moffitt.
