Yeah, when I saw the pitching matchups I was pissed we had to face him and that Dempster was getting another ridiculous matchup. I've never watched him pitch, but I heard great things about him. Then I saw his stat line and realized that he hasn't been dominant at all and we could easily crush him.

Nomar

I'm most worried about tonight's game. We're not so good vs LHP and if we lose tonight there's a solid chance we lose the series vs a horrible team.

Hopefully the mad horseman shows up big

AI
08-05-2013, 06:08 PM
Well, actually, we're 22-14 against LHP this year. Only 2 teams in all of baseball have a better record against southpaws. Astros are 2-8 in their last 10 games and are one of the worst teams in baseball, so I feel pretty good about this series regardless of the pitching matchups.

Arguably, this is one of the really unfortunate outcomes of WMB's terrible sophomore slump. If WMB had come close to meeting expectations, he might have been that big RH bat the Sox so badly need.

One can hope that XB might supply some RH punch, though I doubt that we'll see him hitting behind Ortiz any time soon.

I have to say, until this year I hated Lackey. I wanted him gone gone gone after last season. As far as I am concerned, he's the most improved player and I would say a good candidate for the 10th player award. That said, can't these clowns get him some runs so he could have a lot better win/loss record???

All that said, as I've said before Napoli would make a killer 6th hitter. WMB failed to do the job, so Napoli took over, he also has 4th when Ortiz isn't playing and has done quite well at that.

Napoli is worth the money, and was one of the 2-3 key players from April 11-May 12th:

I guess with Drew, he seems to get big hits from time to time. But for whatever reason (the low RISP, I suppose), Napoli just doesn't seem to get as many key RBI producing hits.

I agree that he's earning his money (particularly given the pay reduction from the initial contract offer) this season, and is producing numbers that appear to be roughly league average for 1B, and has been very surprisingly good defensively at 1B.

But I also agree with you that I hope that the Sox can find an upgrade for 1B for next season and beyond. I'm just not sure who it could be at this point. The Sox might find themselves feeling that they need to keep Napoli around for lack of a better alternative.

bagwell368

Napoli in his career has hit in the 8th hole the most, then the 7th, then the 6th. He looks like he's pressing. He's swinging hard on outside breaking balls that he should go oppo with. If he was hitting 6th, he might relax more. He's had two streaks this year when he wasn't just pulling. I'd give him two days off, and try to work with him hitting oppo in practice.

He's flawed, but he's by far the best option we have at 1B, best hope he comes alive again, because if he doesn't playoff chances take a solid hit.

Good question with no definitive answer that we can look up.

Also Napoli had an .860 OPS in July. His K% is alarming and I probably would look elsewhere before resigning him, but I'm not gonna count him out. He could easily go on a tear like April before the season is over. The RISP numbers may be him pressing, or a sample size thing. Hard to say.

Tough to see Bogaerts batting 5th right away. If he starts off and just murders it then maybe after a couple weeks he could slot in there. I think Ellsbury, Victorino, Ortiz, Pedey, Napoli might be better than what's going on now. Pedroia isn't hitting much and is good in the 4 spot. Victorino is playing very well, might as well have our best hitter batting 3rd.

Even the best defenders have an occasional error. I think that the key thing would be if the error was due to his relative inexperience at 3B or one that any 3B-man could get.

Wrong, Napoli had 133 games played at 1B between 2010-2012. He was also a better defensive catcher than Montero, which likely correlates to how well they would play 1B.
