View Full Version : A few problems with what Barkley said

Ok, so he's stopped showing up drunk to TNT and cramming his face with steak and chips. That's good I guess. And according to him his Magic Johnson grew two inches because he lost so much fat. Congratulations.

But of course, and maybe it's just because he can't bear to pass up some free publicity, Barkley just has to shoot his mouth off about the Trayvon Martin case. And sure, I understand part of his reasoning, he wants to just reassure "white America" that "hey, look, we ain't all bad. We ain't all some kinda guys wearin' hoodies, probably hopped up on some of that marijuawna, you know, out eatin's skittles and drinkin' ice tea in the middle of the night, scarin' the bejeebus out of that poor Zimmerman guy who is just tryin' to guard the neighborhood."

Ok, yeah, so we get it. Fox is opening a big sports news network, there's dollars in them dar hills blah blah whatever. A couple quick points however:

1. "But they didn't have enough evidence to charge him (George Zimmerman)." WRONG. In fact, the prosecutors had 911 tapes that forensic analysis had conclusively revealed to contain a recording of Trayvon Martin pleading for his life and screaming, just before he was shot (ending the screaming instantly). That this evidence, the main piece of key forensic evidence, was not allowed into the trial was an ugly, ugly injustice and clear evidence of judicial corruption, Florida style. To make it worse, the recording was turned into the centerpiece of the prosecution's lame, he-said-she-said circus, allowing everybody from Zimmerman's side to get up there and lie and say it was Zimmerman, and even allowing the cops to get in on the action saying that Trayvon's dad hadn't recognized his own son's voice as he died. But of course the scientific voice analysis (which the FBI and NSA uses and is fn uber sophisticated and accurate) had been barred from the trial. Barkley spreading the lie that there was no evidence is pernicious.

2. "there was some racial profiling, no question about it." Racial profiling (and Zimmerman's subsequent pursuit and confrontation of Trayvon) far exceed the requirements for what would be necessary to call this an illegal homicide. That Trayvon was 17, and that Zimmerman gets into it with him, then apparently doesn't have the balls to get punched in the face without pulling out his semi-auto 9mm pistol and killing him, is conveniently overlooked. Somehow Barkley says "I agreed with the verdict." Really?

3. "It gives every white person and black person, who's racist, a platform to vent their ignorance," Here the problem with what Barkley says is more subtle, and most people won't recognize it. But Barkley is drawing what is called a false equivalence: in effect he is saying "Some white people are racist, and some black people are racist, and both of these things are equal." I know I know, Fair and Balanced. Right? The problem is that a police, judicial and penal system that is harshly directed against African Americans, bolstered by members of the media, business and political establishment who philosophically believe that black people are somehow "less than" white people (because of the Bible, the writings of David Duke, the traditions of the KKK, whatever) in a country that was plagued by the evil of racist slavery for its first 100 years... is not "equal" to a certain number of black people standing up and saying "hey, this is bull****, you can't shoot a 17 year old like that, the cops made no arrest, this is unjust."

For Barkley to stand up and say that these two things are equal, that the black people making a fuss first about the Trayvon killing and then about the Zimmerman verdict are "racist" and just as bad as the people on the Right who are overtly racist... It's a betrayal. I mean if Dan Patrick started going on TV giving interviews about how he supports the Zimmerman verdict... look, people don't like it. I don't care about the color of Barkley's skin either, what is that supposed to make him some kind of authority on racial justice in America? The fact that Barkley says this in the context of the Zimmerman fiasco, which is a huge embarassment to the entire country and 95% of all educated "white people," to say nothing of Florida, is just ugly.

This guy is a fool, and TNT/ESPN/whatever would do well to just quietly yank him and replace him with Bruce Bowen, let him get back down to Alabama to play golf and drink. He has a right to say whatever he wants but we have a right to think he is repulsive, and there is no reason why we should have to be reminded of THIS S**T every time we watch a basketball game on TNT for the next couple of years.

Goodnight NOW!!

It's Charles Barkley.

If you don't want to see Barkley every night on TNT and be reminded of this ugliness than we shouldn't be shy to talk about it.

What gets me is your own president along with the media is stirring the pot. And you are buying into it. If you wanna point fingers blame the laws in Florida which let's you carry a weapon with which you can defend yourself with.

This x10000.

This is the NBA forum. Charles Barkley isn't going to be playing for anyone next year, as far as I can tell right now.. so please take it somewhere else. Get enough of this kind of commentary on the news/radio/coworkers. I don't want it bleeding into one of my few safe havens.

I didn't here Barkley so I can't really judge what he said. On balance it seems his points are being stretched, but maybe not. Some of the response her though certainly seem racist to me. Obama's point of whether the Stand your ground law would have worked for Trayvon if he'd been the one with the gun and had used it because he'd felt threatened by Zimmerman following him. And I think w all know the answer to that.

Given the law, though, and with the case as presented in court, there was certainly reasonable doubt. I do question the minds of the jurors that I've heard discussing the case, since they seemed swayed by racialism at best, but the prosecution did not do a great job here.
