Wow...

He was very good recently too, but what's new?

RT @sean_mcadam: Andrew Bailey has "significant" shoulder injury; likely facing Season-ending surgery. #redsoxtalk

Well that escalated quickly.

Yikes, that is really bad. Possibly career ending. Shoulder injuries that require surgeries are killers for pitchers, and even when they go right it can take years to get back. We won't see him again, they won't tender him a contract at the end of the year.

Wow. I feel like we lose another reliever everyday.

This guy's entire career has been haunted by injuries....and now it's likely over too.

Shoulder is the worst, elbow is usually what you want to see if it comes down to those two. It's a shame, but another reason why you shouldn't trade for relievers who get overvalued because theyve closed games.

So so far, we've traded...

Lowrie, Weiland, Head, Alcantara, Reddick, DeJesus, Sands, Pimentel and Melancon in exchange for a good number of blown saves, 2 season ending injuries and Brock Holt.

Awesome.

This is getting ridiculous. Both Hanrahan and Bailey....jettisoned into space. Enjoy your time elsewhere boys.

Pretty much.

I guess trading for relievers is not Cherington's forte.

This just in! Trading for fat out of shape relievers is not a great blueprint for success!

Maybe so, but really we traded for a guy with a serious injury history...so they knew the risk.

We traded for him at a discount because of this risk.

Look at his stats in Oakland, his ERA was unreal (especially in 2009 and 2010) To get a healthy closer with two of three seasons with sub 2 era, you would be looking at a lot more than Reddick and Head

The Sox gambled that he would turn it around and be healthy, it didn't happen. It was a risk and it didn't pay off.

And then gambled again with hanrahan coming off a lousy year. Risk is fine, but at some point you have to leverage that risk with some reliable acquisitions.

I never said he wasn't good, and I never complained about what we gave up for him. I just said they knew the risk due to his injury history....and you pretty much just restated that and said it didn't pay off, which is true. So I don't know what you're trying to say....

Righthanded reliever Andrew Bailey has made the decision to have surgery on his shoulder. Mets team physician David Altchek will do the procedure on Wednesday in New York.

Bailey has a torn labrum and a torn capsule at the very least. The surgery will keep him out at least 12 months. Because Bailey is eligible for arbitration [for the last time], the Red Sox will have to decide whether to offer him a contract after the season.

12 month, would be by next August, toss in a typical Andrew Bailey long delay to September. Non-tender this off-season. He somehow has accumulated 3 year worth of service time spending on the DL.

I think Workman would be great in the pen. I say give him a shot at closing
