View Full Version : Monta fires agent

Monta Ellis was the leading candidate for the “rude awakening to my value around the league” award from this free agency period. (His former backcourt mate Brandon Jennings was the other frontrunner.)

Ellis reportedly turned down a three-year, $36 million extension from the Bucks and the rest of us knew he would regret that (he thought he could get more years and eight figures a year). The market for Ellis has been pretty dry. The Hawks are interested but not with a big offer, the same from the Mavericks but even less so. The Knicks and Lakers reportedly had interest but neither can offer more than the mini midlevel of $3.2 million (the Lakers used theirs on Chris Kaman now) and more likely were offering veteran minimum deals.

So Ellis has blamed his agent, reports Chris Broussard of ESPN.

Monta Ellis, one of the premier players remaining on the free agent market, parted ways with his longtime agent, Jeff Fried, on Wednesday.

Ellis, who opted out of the final year of a six-year, $66 million deal, is frustrated that he has yet to receive a high-paying contract offer. Industry sources expect him to sign with agent Dan Fegan. http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/10/monta-ellis-fires-his-agent-because-that-was-the-problem/

LOL. Not surprised he isn't getting offered more.

Not good for the agent, hopefully he lands a client that can actually make him some money.

Guess he was expecting to get enough to make the opt out worth it. Not sure what a new agent will do. The market for him is thin now.

Yea his agent was the problem  Ellis is not nearly worth what he thinks he's worth and a new agent won't change his value.

If Mayo and Smith could get 7 mil a year I don't see why he couldn't get 10+.

Monta must hate the statistical revolution. In years past, guys like him (great superficial stats, meager relevant stats) would have commanded alot more respect.

lol, just read the article. You missed this snippet

It wasn’t Fried. Ellis is a volume shooter in a league that more and more values efficiency. Ellis can dish the rock but he is at best a disinterested defender. He can get you points off a lot of contested shots — he averaged 19.2 points and 6 assists a game last year — but a lot of new era GMs shy away from guys like that.

Also, welcome to the new CBA, with its much stiffer tax structure. Teams are far more cautious with their spending.

Somebody will pick up Ellis; he has value on a team. Just not as much as he thought he had.

He should have just accepted the Bucks offer.

He'd be well suited as a bench scorer or 3rd option on a contender with perimeter defensive strength.

Unfortunately, he thinks he's a star. And this is why I never liked you as a player Monta.

Because those guys do more on the court and still have a higher ceiling at this point. Neither is terrible on D. I think 10 mil plus is too much, unless it's a 3 year deal of sorts. But at this point, he will only get abour 25-28 mil.

Soooo....

he had 1 year and 11 million option year which he turned down.
He had 3 year and 36 million extension which he turned down.

Ok, at that point, people just thought he didn't want to play for the Bucks. Right?

Well, seems just just kept wanting more money :/

Yup when all else fails fire the agent. He should take a one year deal and become all around better and work hard. People think james/Kobe and on down the list are as good as they are because of their talent but its also their work ethic. James is the best player on the planet but still tries to improve. A guy like Ellis just wants to score and put up fancy stats and get paid.... Its nice to see the league is finally realizing all around value.

Monta fired his agent because he overvalued him just as much as most of the fans on here used to.

There are rumors that he's moving on to Dan Fagan who is more well known.

Neither Mayo and Smith, all three of them are bad defenders. I'd take Ellis who can actually pass the ball.

:eyebrow:

That being said, Ellis ranked as the fifth worst defender in the entire league.

Why would he turn down 3-year-36-mill? If his agent pressured him to turn it down and convinced him he'd get a better deal... then yeah... I'd fire him too...

Maybe the Pistons can do a sign-and-trade with one of their expiring contracts? Not that I want him on the Pistons.

its not the agent's fault, maybe its just gm's are finally smartening up

Mayo and Smith are both significantly better defenders than Monta. Forget about the effort that Monta doesnt give, and then add the fact that he is physically too small. Monta has been overrated since he came into the league, now everyone knows it.

I've a problem with what you said, they can be better, but significantly better? And about the effort lets no go there, you also don't know what kind of effort Mayo and Smith are going to give, and they're ALL overrated, the three of them and I think we can agree with that.

They are only so many roster spots on the Pistons. :D

Ellis is an idiot, nobody would offer him what the Bucks were. :pity:
