View Full Version : How is this possible

I thought salaries had to match up in a trade, so how is GSW able to dispose their crap salaries? There including draft picks too, how is this fair and be allowed. I actually like the trade and all but I'm just lost on how this happens. Dropping 23 mil, including draft picks, for a player making less than 1, someone please explain.

because the salary matching rules apply when teams are over cap,the jazz were way under the cap so could just absorb the contracts

the salary cap matching rule is only in play when both teams are above the soft cap. (or would be at the end of the trade). There is a little bit of wiggle room. Utah is very far under the cap. They are outright tanking next season btw.

jazz have 26 mill in roster salaries going into this offseason so they can take on a ton of salary without giving anything up. Like when the Timberwolves took on Eddy Curry's huge contract in 2011 without giving anything up. Salaries only have to match if both teams are over the cap, so in this case it works fine. Salary dumping to teams under the cap in exchange for picks or young assets is very common in the nba.
