Detroit Pistons general manager Joe Dumars met with Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith at 12:01 a.m. ET with a plan to make the free agent forward a substantial four-year offer, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Atlanta has shown far more interest in working sign-and-trade arrangements for Smith than re-signing him to a long-term deal, league sources said.

Yeah this is puzzling. The roster already has 2 good big men and you want to spend a ton of cash on a 3rd? Please don't tell me he's a starting small forward in this league (or on the Pistons) because it's a lie. The only time Josh Smith isn't being worthless on the offensive end is when he's operating in the paint.

Thank you Pistons (if he accepts) though. Time to move Horford to PF.

Smith, IMO, would be at his best in Houston with or without Howard. SF isn't the position you want him at.

The Detroit Pistons are meeting with Josh Smith tonight, as @WojYahooNBA tweeted. The Boston Celtics are also expected to pursue Smith.

I am curious at what a healthy Bynum could bring next to Horford. Who could stop that frontcourt?

I think we are rebuilding though. We will make our pitch to Howard Monday and after that we will see.

Not a very efficient scorer for a big, relatively limited offensive considering that's his entire game, and about as good as an orange cone on defense.

It's going to be funny watching these teams tank for Andrew. NBA needs to do something about this. It's completely orthodox, unfair, and bad for the league. When you have teams willing to lose so they can grab some picks, it damages the rep of the league. As for Josh Smith, he's not going to turn a team to a contending playoff caliber squad. There are only a few players who can, and Smith is probably going to get a max contract while not being able to do it.

Check out how many teams with the worst record in the NBA have gotten the #1 overall pick since the lottery system was implemented. The league does a terrific job to dissuade tanking, but at the same time you can't force a team to put a team out there that they don't want. There's a salary floor to also prevent teams from throwing out a roster too cheap as well.

Houston needs to stay away from Smith.

Josh Smith takes 16 shots per game. This automatically makes Dwight the 3rd option offensively.

It looks good on paper, but in reality I think it's a poor move.

Focus on Dwight first if your Houston

SMITH (Age - 27): 17.5 / 8.4 / 4.2 / 1.8 / 1.2 / 3.0 / .465 / .517 / 2.3 ( 30%3P)
MONROE (Age - 23): 16.0 / 9.6 / 3.5 / 0.7 / 1.3 / 2.9 / .486 / .689 / 2.3

Potential contract for SMITH: Rumors state around 75-85M / 5yr -- Smith turned down 47M extension from Hawks.
Potential contract for Monroe: 4M (2013/14), eligible for 60M/4yr or 78/5yr extensions.

I think Detroit only makes this move for two reasons:

1) They feel Monroe is likely to bolt in 2014/15 or they KNOW they can get a blue-chip type player or asset for Greg.
2) They want to develop Drummond slowly (he's coming off a back injury and is still very raw). Smith/Monroe front court with Drummond getting 24-29 minutes of run. Smith playing on the wing a bit too sometimes.

I hope it's #2 as that trio could make for the best front-court in the league. I hope Detroit doesn't plan to trade Monroe he's a special type of player and it's been a rough few years in Detroit. He'll improve even more with some players around him.

Mixed feelings about the pursuit of Josh Smith from Pistons fans. I'd say most aren't in favor of it, as Monroe/Drummond twin towers is what most Pistons fans want IMO.

Detroit needs to start developing Drummond, now. And the twin towers thing makes no sense for Detroit. Duncan can hit the outside midrange jumpshot, Drummond nor Monroe are great midrange shooters. If I were Detroit, I'd think of building around Drummond, not Monroe. Drummond is a better rebounder, defender, and is only 19? Damn.
