I really like Sheffield and Longhi. Hopefully we can sign those two.

Boldt already has said hes going to college. Morrison looks like he will too.

Longhi played the final two games of his high school career at Boston’s spring training park, jetBlue Park in Fort Myers, where Venice won its second straight Class 7A State title.

The right-handed hitter batted .625 in the state semifinal and final. He finished the season with a .262 batting average and 17 RBI.

Born in Springfield, Mass., Longhi is a huge Red Sox fan. He worked out for the team on a couple of occasions at jetBlue.

“I showed pretty well,” he said.

Projected as a top 10 pick, Longhi’s father, Tommy, received a call from Seattle, which was interested in Nick in the third or fourth round.

I think he's signable.

How much for Denney originally?

Slot for pick #81 is $671,200. He's likely to sign over-slot for upwards of $1M.

hope we can get denney for around 1 mil and then go after sheffield and longhi and speier

Theoretically, we could use the $671,200 allotted to the #81 pick plus the 5% overage on our bonus pool to sign Denney for $1,012,710. We then would still have the money saved by going under-slot with Ball, Stank and rounds 6-10 to sign a few guys.

I dont see Denney being a problem to sign at all really. Nobody in the first 10 rounds should be for us. Hardest may be Austin.

Sheffield will be interesting. Big win if he signs, but we probably on have a 30% chance to do so.

Longhi is overlooked. Great defense at 1st and is a polished hitter who barrels up the ball a lot despite lacking plus tools offensively. If his power comes along he could be a good player.

Asuaje and Austin interest me.

As we all expected, Boldt won't be signing:

RED WING — Turns out Ryan Boldt's decision was easier than expected.

After seeing his professional baseball stock drop due to concerns over his health and sign-ability, the Red Wing standout announced he'd be attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Boldt made the call shortly after being drafted Saturday afternoon by the Boston Red Sox in the 22nd round of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Boldt is expected to enroll in classes this summer to continue rehabbing his knee while getting a jumpstart on his education. He'll be teammates with cousin Pat Kelly for at least one year in Lincoln, and the 4.0 student could graduate in just three years, when he's eligible to be drafted again.

Boldt decided not to wait around to see what type of numbers the Red Sox threw his way before recommitting to Nebraska coach Darin Erstad.

P.S. Lav, I think we should sticky a thread dedicated to signing news (quotes/links only) and another thread for all draft conversation so that important things don't get lost between pages.

Add Burkamper to the list of those not signing.

Derek Burkamper, a right-handed pitcher from Muscatine, Iowa, was picked in the 20th round and Ryan Boldt of Red Wing, Minn., was chosen in the 22nd, both by the Boston Red Sox, on the final day of the Major League Baseball Draft in New Jersey.

Both Burkamper and Boldt said they will join the Huskers next fall and wait for the draft in three years when they become eligible again.

Burkamper is 4-0 with a 46-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in the early Iowa high school baseball season that runs through the summer. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound standout said he couldn't wait to put on a Husker uniform. "I'll give the draft a chance in three years," he said.

Boldt, who was projected to go as high as the second round in the draft, said he would become a Husker, too. The 6-foot-2 center fielder, who played for the under-18 Team USA and was MVP of the Perfect Game All-American game last fall, recently had arthroscopic knee surgery and missed most of his senior season at Red Wing High.

"I went through graduation and I sat around to see about the draft, for one day, then I thought I'd be a Husker and get a college education," Boldt said. Boldt is a cousin of Nebraska second baseman Pat Kelly, who led NU in hits this season and was impressive in the field.

"I'll play summer ball as soon as I can and I'll look forward to playing at Nebraska," Boldt said. "It was going to take a pretty high draft pick for me to go pro right now. But I still get to play baseball, and that's the important part for me."

Looks like Carlos Asuaje is signing. He is ranked #208 on BA's Top 500.

After the 10th round of this year's MLB First-Year Player Draft ended Friday night, Nova Southeastern University shortstop Carlos Asuaje's father, a Red Sox admirer, told his son, a huge Yankees and Derek Jeter fan, it "would fill my heart so deeply" if the Red Sox selected him.

Sure enough, they did with the seventh pick of the 11th round Saturday, and son was just as elated as dad.

"I'm so grateful the Red Sox had faith in me and gave me this opportunity," said Asuaje, who went undrafted out of St. Thomas Aquinas but added he'll sign with Boston after three years at Nova. "It took a little longer than I might have liked, but it felt good to get picked early in the 11th. It took all of the stress out of the process. It was really incredible. I was surprised when I saw they had picked me, and then they called. I'm ecstatic and really happy to be part of the Red Sox nation."

Morrison, who was ranked No. 137 on Baseball America's list of this year's top 250 draft prospects, had made it known he planned to honor his scholarship to Oregon State University regardless of what happened in the draft.

"I'm a little shocked that they still would consider me in the draft and use a pick on me, because I let them know I'm going to college," Morrison said. "I wasn't really expecting it to be honest. But I was definitely pleased that they still want me. It was a good surprise."

Even though he was no longer expecting to be drafted, Morrison said he was still pretty curious and had been paying attention to the draft this weekend. Morrison had talked to Red Sox scouts this past season at Archbishop Murphy. They were one of the first teams to tell him they had a specific interest in drafting him in the early rounds.

"They gave me a call and just kind of asked me if I was interested in getting drafted or if I was still going to college," Morrison said. "I said I was going to college and they said thanks and hung up."

Mike Adams signing, predictable.

The Red Sox selected the 22-year-old, 6-foot-3, 215-pound left-handed pitcher with the seventh pick of the seventh round, 203rd overall.

Though he still has a year left of eligibility at UT, Adams anticipates moving on.

"If the money is what is promised and everything, I'll be heading up to New York-Penn League (which includes Boston's Short-Season Single-A team the Lowell Spinners) to start my pro career soon.'

He has another semester to go before graduating with a degree in health science and adult fitness. However, his playing days with the Spartans would appear to be behind him.

"Making the decision to go to the University of Tampa was the best decision I've ever made," Adams said. "I think I had a real good season. I achieved a lot of personal accolades and won a national championship. I feel like my job in Tampa is done and I'm ready to move on to my pro career."

No signing information is available yet, but based on him signing so fast, I'd say he signed for $100K which wouldn't count against our bonus pool.

NOTE: Picks in rounds 11-40 signed for $100K don't count against a teams bonus pool, however, every dollar above the permitted $100K counts against the bonus pool.

Boston selected the Venice, Fla., native early in the 30th round on Saturday, well past where it seems likely that he will pass up LSU in favor of playing pro ball in the low minors and for a relatively low signing bonus.

Longhi indicated earlier this week that he would likely head to pro ball if he went in the first 10-15 rounds. That didn't materialize for a 17-year-old prospect who throws in the low 90 mph range and has a reliable curve ball.

Meh, we'll see when the money rolls in. If he's one of the targets of money from underslot signings I bet he thinks about this a lot harder. It wouldn't take much savings (or use of the 10% money) to get him to sign if his target was the 10-15 round slot money. If he walks after an offer in that range then it's more of a pride thing.

Just for clarification with your 10% number.

Are you stating this as going 10% over their pool? If the Red Sox go 10% over their pool they will pay a 75% tax on the excess as well as lose their 1st round pick next year.

I guess technically (if I'm not overlooking anything) 10th round money is approximately $137,400 and anything after is $100,000. So there really is no difference in getting drafted from the 11-40th round. The slot is up to $100,000 for any of those picks. So by Longhi saying if he were drafted in rounds 10-15 makes little sense, the 11-40th rounds are slotted the same amount of money.

Also, if the Sox choose to go over slot to sign a player outside of the first 10 rounds the amount of money over the $100,000 recommended slot counts against the bonus pool.

Mike Andrews at Soxprospects believes that the Sox might be able to save between $900K-$1 million in the first 10 rounds to spend on a tough sign in a round outside of the top 10 (players who are going to be tough signs are Boldt, Sheffield, and Trevor Morrison.)

Exactly. If Longhi was looking to be drafted before round 15, that would mean that he's "signable" if the money is right. Another thing to consider when it comes to Longhi is, that he is a die hard Red Sox fan.

I have a question for people who know more about these prospects than I do.

Since we drafted this Stank, I’ve heard nothing but good things. He’s 19 years old, he’s a big physical pitcher, he throws 91-96 with his fastball and has a slider that he throws at 84. He’s got a great delivery and good fastball command. He throws three pitches. He's got good pitchability.

So why was he only rated as the 70th something best prospect in a weak draft? Where’s the downside?

Because his last name is difficult to spell.

Seriously, I think scouts want to see him develop his secondary pitches (mainly his slider.) They say his success depends on the development of his secondary offerings.

I also found this via http://metsmerizedonline.com/2013/03/keith-law-posts-an-update-on-rhp-teddy-stankiewicz.html:

Stankiewicz pitched in a scrimmage against a lineup of Texas Rangers A-ball kids that included prospects Jorge Alfaro and Jairo Beras, throwing well despite getting zero help from his defense. Stankiewicz pitched from 91-96 mph with fringy command, mostly 92-94 in the first with the range expanding as the outing went on. He showed a curve, slider and change, nothing above-average, with good depth on the slow curveball (70-73 mph) and slight fade on the change, plus what I believe was an attempted cutter at 89.

Stankiewicz stands 6-foot-4 and has a very high leg kick, getting his knee up near his shoulder while extending his leg outward, but then he sacrifices his height as he drops down to drive forward. He takes a long stride toward the plate, although his arm is late relative to his front leg and he doesn’t turn his pitching hand over until pretty late in the delivery. There’s also some head violence in the delivery after the release, not severe but enough that some teams will downgrade him for it. His arm is quick and he’s athletic enough that a good development team could probably tidy up the arm swing enough to send him out as a starter.

Hope this helps.

You think he goes under the $454,800 he's slotted?

Via Soxprospects:

Meanwhile, Boston's fourth- and fifth-round picks, right-hander Myles Smith and left-hander Corey Litrell, appear to be in line for slot bonuses, although there may be some room for the team to negotiate for slightly below slot deals with the college juniors. The club's sixth through 10th rounders should all sign for significantly below slot.

I'm sure it's a pretty good sign. They wine and dine the draftees, show them a game from nice seats, give them tours, etc.

There's definitely extra incentive to get a deal done with any of the top 10 picks. If any one of the top 10 picks don't sign, the allotted pool money is decreased by their specific slot value.

Jake Drehoff (http://www.forsythnews.com/section/108/article/18528/)

Bayer was right. Drehoff, a redshirt sophomore out of the University of Southern Mississippi, was picked 354th overall in the 12th round in the Major League Baseball amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.

Two days later, Drehoff flew to Boston to be examined by team doctors. This Saturday, he plans to report to Fort Myers and the Red Sox’s Gulf Coast Rookie League affiliate where he said he’ll sign his professional contract.

They want to get Ball underslot, that's why it's not instantly done. I'd be surprised if he didn't sign soon, though the Red Sox might not be in a rush. Who knows how many innings they want from him this year, it could just be 1 start at the end of the year. Overslot deals won't happen until the 12th

That's a good point. They can control him in MiLB for 5 yrs as long as he signed before he turns 19 so they may give him the summer to spend his bonus money and not get started until ST (or instrux, not sure how they apply).

Still, I think they'd want a deal done sooner than later so that any savings could be applied to those overslot deals. They need some sort of lay of the land in order to make the right ones happen.

It's also worth considering the fact that overslot deals may not happen until the last minute but that doesn't mean that the sides aren't working out the deal well ahead of time. The kids with leverage want to push the deadline because time is their only real advantage. For the teams, the opposite is true. The only real exception to this that I've heard of (Sox related) was Swihart who had no contact until the night of the deadline when he was offered $2M to take or leave.

Callis on Red Sox draft...

"Mike (Virginia): What are your thoughts on the overall strategy by the Red Sox? Do they have any chance to sign these high ceiling HS players they drafted in the late rounds? Or will they throw money at one of them (Sheffield?) and call it a day.

Jim Callis: That draft looks very sound to me. Jonathan Denney was a steal in terms of talent in the third round, and Trey Ball and Teddy Stankewicz were solid picks in the first two rounds. Boston will try to save some money in their bonus pool, but I’m not sure they’ll have enough to land Jordan Sheffield (13th round) or Ryan Boldt (22nd round). Boston may have to settle for a couple of non-seven-figure signings after the 10th round."

Sickels on Red Sox draft...

I like this one a lot: Ball is super-athletic and projectable and has more polish than is often assumed. Both Stankiewicz and Denney would have been first-round picks in some draft classes, so getting all three of these guys, assuming Denny will sign, is a coup. Smith throws quite hard; Littrell doesn't but has superior command. Cheap but interesting college picks in subsequent rounds will hopefully enable the money to work out at the top. In the old days, the Red Sox would have showered cash on guys like Sheffield, Williams, or Boldt. The new draft rules make that much more difficult, but even without the overslot options I think the Red Sox did well.

As AI said this could really make our haul crazy good. Power move.

Absolutely. We are currently $90,400 under-budget after the Denney signing. Depending on what Ball and the other remaining top 10 picks sign under-slot for, using that money plus the 5% overage we could be looking at something in the range of $1,200,000-$1,400,000 in available money.

With the news that Jalen Williams signed slightly over-slot (I'd guess he got around $150K, which really turns out to be $50K over-slot), we could target Sheffield, Longhi and Thaiss might become a possibility.

The athletic left-hander out of New Castle High School in Indiana was in Boston to take his physical on Monday, and no issues emerged that would jeopardize the agreement. While precise terms remain unknown, Ball has agreed to a deal for less than the $3.246 million recommended slot value.

Just a question in general. Do you think the Sox were thinking at some point about not signing Ball at all and just picking 7th next year again? That strategy could always work if you are unhappy with that player is left on the board.
We could have also saved the 3m-slot money and used it for other tough signings. Or is the slot-money when you fail to sign a player (until the 10th round) just lost?

Apparently a press release now making things official...

The Red Sox have signed their first-round draft pick, lefthander Trey Ball of New Castle, Ind. He was the seventh overall selection.

The agreement was first reported by Alex Speier of WEEI.com.

Ball will work out with the Red Sox at Fenway Park, then report to Fort Myers, Fla., and the Gulf Coast League Red Sox next week.

...

The Red Sox also said they signed:

OF Forrestt Allday (eighth round)
RHP Kyle Martin (ninth round)
RHP Taylor Grover (10th round)
INF Carlos Asuaje (11th round)
C Jake Romanski (14th round).
OF Bryan Hudson (15th round)
RHP Joe Gunkel (18th round)
INF Reed Gragnani (21st round)
INF Jantzen Witte (24th round)
C Daniel Bethea (34th round)

It has been widely reported the Red Sox also have agreed to terms with RHP Teddy Stankiewicz (second round), C Jon Denney (third round), and LHP Corey Littrell (fifth round). The team has not finalized the details, apparently.

Stankiewicz and Littrell both indicated on Twitter that they signed and were assigned to Lowell. Denney wrote on Twitter today, "Headed to Florida!! Starting Rookie ball."Boston.com

Nick Longhi (http://louisianastate.scout.com/2/1302202.html)

But don’t rule out incoming signee Nick Longhi. Assuming the 30th-round draft pick opts for college, Longhi already has the offensive tools to warrant playing right away. If he can make a seamless transition from high school to college, he may be LSU’s best option at 1B. But LSU will definitely sweat his professional decision until the July 12 deadline. Longhi has said the Boston Red Sox are willing to match his desired signing bonus, and if they are, Longhi’s childhood favorite might end up stealing him away from LSU. Still, the LSU staff and current players like Bregman are working to convince him he will drastically improve his stock if he opts for college.

Jimmy Allen (http://www.sanluisobispo.com/2013/06/26/2562495/blues-shut-out-at-home-split-series.html)

Allen, a junior this past season at Cal Poly, was selected in the 23rd round by the Boston Red Sox in this year’s MLB Draft and has until July 12 to sign as a professional or choose to return to the Mustangs for a senior campaign. Allen hit .299 with 12 doubles and 39 RBI for the Mustangs.

“I’m leaning towards going back to school,” Allen said. “We’re in a good conference. I love it here in San Luis. It was a great experience making it to the regional.”

Nick Longhi (http://www.perfectgame.org/articles/View.aspx?article=8696)

Longhi is still talking with the Red Sox about possibly signing a professional contract, but if nothing can be worked out, he's perfectly content to head to Baton Rouge and LSU.

"We're still seeing what's going to play out with the Red Sox or LSU," he said. "Either way I go it's not going to be a bad decision; it's a win-win situation for me."

Per Jim Callis...

As the scouting season opened, high school outfielder Ryan Boldt was viewed as a potential first-rounder in 2013. However, after playing just one game, the highly regarded Minnesota high schooler tore the meniscus in his right knee, an injury that required surgery and ended his season before it began.

The combination of a considerable ceiling — when healthy, Boldt profiled as an athletic center fielder who can run, showed the hand-eye coordination and plate discipline to hit for average and get on base and possessed projectable (but not present) power potetntial — with scouting uncertainty and signability questions led Boldt to drop like an anvil in the draft. It was not until the third day of the draft, in the 22nd round, that the Red Sox grabbed him.

While Boldt said the day after being drafted that he intended to honor his scholarship commitment to the University of Nebraska, however, the Sox have maintained open dialogue with him. According to industry sources, the team hosted him for a visit to Boston and Fenway Park on Friday, and with enough financial latitude (based on the signing bonuses they’ve conferred to date) to offer a signing bonus in the vicinity of seven figures, the Sox are trying to put their best foot forward in an effort to persuade Boldt to turn pro rather than enroll at Nebraska.

Means he's not impossible to sign. The "I'm not going to sign" spiel right after the draft is usually BS. I still doubt we sign him, unless he realizes it's idiotic to turn down ~$1M dollars. Plenty of draftees visit Fenway and don't sign.

True, but he did visit for a reason. I take it as a sign that he hasn't officially closed the door on signing.

Offer him $1M and literally put the stacks of cash in his face, see if he can resist not signing.

We won't sign Longhi, Shef or Zam until we figure out if Boldt signs or not. Boldt will determine what money we have to work with, but he has to be a priority over any of the remaining draftees.

I have to assume Boldt was using college as a negotiating tool. I know going to Boston to hang with pros would be great no matter who you are, but I doubt that he isn't considering going pro. I would if i got near $1M. He's already had major surgery once, why risk anything before going pro? I don't want to put a percentage of our chance to get him, but I think I was duped a little into thinking they were a lot lower originally.

If Boldt signs, we have the best draft class.

Stankiewicz agreed to terms shortly after the draft, but it took almost three weeks for the deal to become official. Rob Bradford of WEEI.com tweeted yesterday that Stankiewicz was waiting for clearance after his physical. He is in Lowell and should be pitching for the Spinners shortly.

Baseball America still lists Stankiewicz's bonus at $1.1 million, approximately $130,000 under slot for the 45th pick. The 19-year-old from Seminole State College will likely follow a similar path to 2012 draft picks Brian Johnson and Pat Light, who both threw short two-to-three inning stints with Lowell the summer after being drafted. Signing Boldt was a big time long shot in the first place. Would love to have him but if he's looking for anything close to what was reprted (neighborhood of $2M), forget it. In fact he's gotta be kidding. Sheffield's similarly highly rated and a lot more realistic.

After his physical revealed a reportedly minor issue, Stankiewicz ultimately signed for $915k, according to a tweet from Baseball America's Jim Callis. This means that Boston has committed to spend $875,500 less than its bonus allotment at present, Callis explains, and can spend an additional $318,770 on top of that before it would have to sacrifice a draft pick. These figures could change if the team signs fourth-round choice Myles Smith for above or below his slot allocation.

More cash available to spend on over-slot guys.

If Myles Smith signs for slot (most likely he'll sign under), this is what we have:

Total savings $875,500 + 5% pool overage $341,510 = $1,217,010

Just wow. We had $590,300 available by going under-slot + 5% pool overage $341,510 for a total of $931,810 available to spend and we didn't even get one of the tougher signs. Seriously, WTF?

-Lavigne43-
07-12-2013, 05:48 PM
I think they thought they would have to spend a lot more on Denney then they did. It was a good draft, we signed a lot of good players in a very weak draft. They couldn't get Sheffield done, but its always ridiculously hard to sign Vandy commits

AI
07-12-2013, 05:54 PM
While I agree to a certain extent, you have $931,810 available and you can't sign at the very least one of the other tough signs? Jays got both Brentz and Tellez done for less than that, they did their homework, we didn't.

JMP83
07-12-2013, 06:16 PM
I can't really agree with that. If they really did their homework they'd know Bickford wouldn't have signed for what they were willing to offer. Yeah they got the other two, but Bickford is better than either one and you really have no idea how next year's draft will look until it gets here in a year.

While I'm a little sad they couldn't pull in someone like Beauprez, we don't know what the unsigned were asking for and how much the Sox valued them at. If those two numbers were the same or very close those players would have been signed. All in all it was a solid haul in a below average draft, and no one else in the division seems to have done any better.

-Lavigne43-
07-12-2013, 06:21 PM
Jays didn't sign their first round pick, I'd be way more pissed over that. I guess that's why they were drafting so many college pitchers, so they could sign 2 overslot hs kids and nothing else.

Maybe they didn't think anyone else was good enough to spend that much money on. They've done a hell of a lot more homework on these kids then any of us. We won't be able to judge if they did a good job for years.

For those who love Tellez, he has no other real position than first base. While sure he has power upside like Vogelbach, he's extremely prone to striking out. Not a lot to love with bare minimum athletism from what I've read and seen. Power is amazing.
