View Full Version : Could Morales replace Doubront?

Remember Franklin Morales? The lefthander has been on the disabled list all season with a lower back strain that occurred in spring training and has since healed. But he remains on a rehabilitation assignment because the Red Sox want to prepare him as a starter.

Morales has pitched in three games and gone eight innings so far. His latest stint, on Monday for Triple A Pawtucket, lasted three innings.

Morales will start for Pawtucket again Saturday and is scheduled for four innings.

If we dont change course with his role, wed like to get him to a minimum of five [innings] before we look to do something back here, Farrell said.

At this point, Farrell said, Morales is healthy enough to pitch out of the bullpen. But the Red Sox want to build up their starter depth, and they see Morales as a good option for that given the nine games he started last season. If Doubront continues to struggle, Morales would be a candidate to replace him in the rotation.

Farrell said that if a need were to arise in the bullpen, activating Morales sooner would be a consideration.

Were staying the course as of right now on him starting, Farrell said.Boston.com

The Sox seem very committed to the SP path with Morales. It seems strange given their greater need for BP help at times when Morales might have been able to help. Even stranger when it appears that both Morales and Doubront appear to be out of options (trying to figure out how you maintain SP depth when you can't keep them both active as SP). Taken together and it seems like the length of Doubront's leash may only be the time left on Morales' rehab clock.

While i think they're quitting on Doubront early, I also don't see him ever being too efficient as a SP. Morales also pitched pretty well starting last year. A viable #4 (really #5 because Lackey has been good).

He's starting because they badly need SP depth. They were committed to rehabbing him as a starter before Doubront had this rough patch. He wasn't called up when they were desperate for pitching because he was injured at that time. If Doubront gets rocked his next couple starts and his velocity is not there, then sure it's possible.

Doubront has reported out of shape 2 years in a row. He's got talent - plenty of it. But won't apply himself. Still, it's hard to give up on a lefty with stuff. Make up a fake injury and bring him back as a SP, RP, or deal him if they can't make that work. No way they cut him w/o another shot at least.

He's been back on the mound for a couple of weeks. Had they not been committed to him as a SP they could have cut him back to 1IP per outing and gotten him back into MLB by now.

If Morales is out of options how can he provide SP depth? If he's activated then he goes to the BP and no longer provides any depth. If he's not activated he has to pass through waivers -- and won't make it.

Keep Doubront around though. He's an important part to the team's future and shouldn't be sent to the minors.

He's important only if he can learn to get his pitches-per-inning under control. Quit trying to throw the damn ball by everyone and let your stuff get outs.

6BB and throws just 54 of his 100+ pitches for strikes. Will this clown ever learn to pitch?

He was shutdown because he had another injury, and only just started pitching in games again last week. I don't think his rehab period has to end until the very end of the month/very early June. If he is in the bullpen his role will probably be very similar to last year, pitch multiple innings of relief to stay reasonably stretched out, and if an injury happens he can give us perhaps a 4 inning start.

And he got a ridiculous strikezone from Joe West. If you watched the game you would have seen many of the walks were on embarrassingly bad calls. http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/cache/location.php-pitchSel=467094&game=gid_2013_05_16_bosmlb_tbamlb_1&batterX=&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=.gif

What's concerning with him is the big decrease in velocity. It got a little better in the last game, but it's still not close to what it was last year.

I know that his rehab was stopped and restarted. Yet he pitched for Portland 5/8 and Pawtucket 5/13 and that was after he was throwing from the mound without getting into games. If they didn't want him to start he could have started his rehab a few days earlier and had a few reps within a week. Breslow, for example, was in MLB ten days after his rehab started. Speaking of Breslow, it's well worth noting that they stuck with the SP plan even though Bailey (5/6) and Hanrahan (5/7; 60-day DL 5/9) had just robbed the BP of it's two top arms. They're going slower to build arm strength as a SP so it's taking longer.

I don't consider putting him into the BP as a long reliever and letting him go multiple innings "providing SP depth."

Lefthander Franklin Morales went five innings for Portland. He allowed one unearned run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. He threw 78 pitches, 48 for strikes.

Morales has been on the disabled list all season, technically because of a back injury he suffered in spring training. He made a rehab start April 17 and strained a pectoral muscle. That led to his 30-day rehab assignment being stopped.

Morales started another minor league assignment May 8. He has made four starts in that assignment, working up to five innings. The Red Sox wanted to prepare Morales as a starter to improve their rotation depth.

At this point, the Red Sox could activate Morales and use him in the bullpen. Or they could continue to use him in the minors for up to another 16 days.Boston.com
