View Full Version : Tracy McGrady Gets Out of the First Round

One of the greatest players in the 2000's Decade has finally made it out of the first round of the playoffs. While not always the most efficient, he was definitely a true superstar that was a lot of fun to watch in his prime. Congratulations to him.

T-Mac still has a great following and fanbase even towards the end of his basketball career.

I can't believe McGrady's prime ended at 28, when in today's age, guys like Melo and LeBron are just entering theirs. His last good season was 5 years ago, when he averaged 21.6 PPG and when the Rockets went on that win streak. The next year he was injury ravaged at 29 averaging 15.6 PPG and then after that he became a role player.

That just shows how injury prone he really was. Stoudemire is at that level, but at least he's 30 and still has an enormous amount of talent when he can stay on the floor. It felt like McGrady's skills went with the wind as his injuries mounted.

I think the spurs will go to the finals. so tmacs first time getting out of the first round will also be the first time he reaches the wcf's and nba finals. but he wont have much to do with it.

obviously its whatever and no one cares cuz he doesnt play

but it was still cool to see Tmac on the floor and he did have some good passes. I never forget my VC and Tmac days. I hope he starts tryin to score next time I hate when they always try passing a ton to prove a point they're not selfish

TMAC technically got into the second round in either 2008 or 2009 when he was injured. never suited up, but rockets (mainly YAO), beat portland and met the lakers in round 2.

for history buffs, this was year yao broke his foot in the second round. aaron brooks, scola, and battier pushed the series to 7 games

I would like to see Popovich give T-Mac a proper chance next year. Sign him back for a cheap amount, and see what he can do. Maybe put him on their d-league team and call him up if he improves to that role player status.

It's funny you mention guys like lebron and melo just entering their primes when anyone can have an injury this week and have their careers go like McGrady's. A player's "prime" can only be assessed once they start to decline.

He made it out the 1st round with the Rockets, he just was injured

king4day

Despite McGrady being on injured reserve, the Rockets beat the Trail Blazers 4–2 in the first round of the playoffs to advance to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1997. The Rockets would compete in a memorable series against the eventual NBA champion LA Lakers, before losing Game 7 in LA. Since McGrady was on the Rockets' roster during the 2009 NBA Playoffs, he officially advanced past the first round of the playoffs for the first time in his career.

This quote is from Wiki but it's still true.
IMO, if we're going to count this series as him getting past the first round, then we can count 2009 as well

How does that even matter? It's a team sport. If your team faces a superior team, it's harder for you to advance in the playoffs. A single player's career review cannot be focusing on stuff like this.

But he will finally play in an actual game in the second round this time around. Would love to see San Antonio go all the way and see him get a ring too.

Injuries derailed his career no his prime didn't end at 28, his entire bball life did
he was primed straight out of HS( I don't get all this dumb prime talk)
Same with MELO/BRON they aren't entering anything in they 10th seasons, and that's no disrespecting them at all, we've seen enough plenty to see how they do what they do at top notch level

BRON has been doing this same exact thing day1, and he led CAVS to 60win Finals trip, and now he's gone on to play with a roster built from day 1 to compete for ships and in 2yrs he has 1 ring and 2 Finals app. playing identical style

Same with MELO, he maxed out in WCF in DEN, he led CUSE to NCAA title as freshman and also led DEN to playoffs rookie yr(got robbed for co ROY) all as what he is doing now as then, scoring or chucking or volume this or that and being clutch at it, just like he did at CUSE to DEN to NYC and so on

as individual player TMAC was every bit on they level game wise, coming into draft they said TMAC was a athletic MAGIC JOHNSON with better shooting skill(on cue), plus he was underrated passer like AI

No it just shows you how injuries can derail supreme talent, if he was injury prone he would be like ODEN or BYNUM like and never hardly touch the floor, he wasn't even close to that, its just when injuries hit TMAC they were top of the line career enders like back/knee,which is pretty much the most important things in ball to have(or any sport really), then the talent/skill can show itself to maximum which TMAC had like a MELO/BRON/AI

TMAC was plagued by both

he was also damn near 6'10'' so that makes TMAC even more freakish in my book as far as floor game

best players of past era(eye test) - KIDD - SHAQ - KG - TMAC- DUNCAN - IVERSON

I need a supreme educated psd member to educate me on this 'prime' talk, its about as boring sounding as 5 rings or PER

like do you ignore a players first 5 yrs then take they next 5(prime) regardless and then don't count they last 5 because they are older and lost a step but still highly effective?

is a prime a 5yr stretch or is it a made up age like 28-32 or is it 33-36? its almost like a player is only primed when they win a ring or so

my definition of prime is game(allnba day1 type game-impact),its why I scream these so called 'best' players are primed from day1, not 4-8yrs later on in the league(, KD is not going to improve, he is what he is a scoring machine with a killer J and a crossover to go along with it and he uses his length on both D and O to the maximum, only thing he will do more is go to post, but he can do that anytime,he's basically a 7footer, same with pretty much any best player you feel has entered the league, its well documented

like ALCINDOR won 3 of 4 MVP's in like his first 5yrs in the league, when in the hell did he hit his prime? after he started not winning MVP's?
