View Full Version : What would be your criteria if you were voting for COY?

There are a lot of ways to look at coaching and there is no strict formula for determining COY. But what do you look at? How would you vote? And keep in mind, when I say "how" I do not mean "who".

Should it go to the coach with the best record? Best turnaround? The coach who's team over achieved the most? The coach who managed to keep his team competitive despite injuries?

Agree.

It can't be any of the 4 above in the poll.

i think it's the guy who does the most with the least, which i guess can be counted as the guy who overachieved the most.

So does that mean Greg Poppovich or Phil Jackson would never win the award for coaching multiple all-stars in their prime?

Your criteria makes it seem like the team must be mediocre or poor and they have to win more games than expected. A stacked team is expected to have a top 3 record, so I don't see how they can exceed expectations.

I'm ignoring the poll because I think its not any one thing, here is my critieria.

- You made the playoffs
- Your team had cohesion and toughness
- Your team was gritty during the down points of the season and never completely out of it, and played extremely well together during the high points
- Young players should development
- Bench was used smartly and timely
- You sat a starter when they needed to be on the bench and let them play more time when it was the right time
- Your team did not have twitter or media wars
- You held yourself and team accountable for what was and was not done

This sounds like Pop in a nutshell.

But I actually think player development is a good one actually. Coaching is for the most part, teaching when it comes to the younger talent on the team. So seeing how they develop and grasp the philosophy of the team is something that can't be overlooked.
