Bard will replace Steven Wright on the roster. Wright was optioned tonight. #redsox

Ehh, those numbers still aren't impressive for Bard.

Weird that they would interrupt what he's doing just for a couple days.

Well, maybe they could have called up someone else. Wright was sent down because he wasn't going to be able to pitch for 2-3 days after being used up last night, so the Sox wanted to get a fresh arm for the pen. And maybe they thought that now was a good time to give Bard a chance, though as you point out, it'll probably only be until Lackey returns.

Or maybe it could signal the end of AA's time in Boston. Farrell's comments after tonights performance were somewhat damning. Questioning his focus and whatnot.

Also could be the Miller to DL routine.

Aceves should be back in the pen until he can be dealt. Then send him packing for Stan Papi*2.

They could always demote Wilson when Lackey returns and keep Bard on the roster.

With morales and Breslow I'd be surprised if either stick.

Bard has still looked like a total mess in AA though. I can't imagine him sticking

Meh, still think we need a #5 pitcher. Neither Lackey or Bard have, IMO, what it takes to be in the rotation of our team.

not a temporary callup it seems

BOSTON -- The Red Sox on Wednesday made it official, promoting reliever Daniel Bard from Double-A Portland. Manager John Farrell made it clear that the Sox are hopeful this is more than just a temporary fix, that he will become a permanent part of the bullpen.

"He’s here to do just that, perform and be a regular in our bullpen," Farrell said before Wednesday afternoon’s game with the Oakland Athletics.

Bard is a reliever now.

This. Plus Lackey looked excellent in his one start this year, his stuff was back.

Farrell did say that if John Lackey were unable to start Sunday — which is what the Sox want — Aceves is not necessarily the starter. Allen Webster could start. That speaks volumes about where Aceves is now in the eyes of the team.

Daniel Bard, Farrell said, will be used early in games, not in the later innings. The Sox have been heartened by his fastball command in recent appearances. His velocity has been 93-96.Boston Globe

Breslow didn't retire any of the four batters he faced last night. Word is his arm strength isn't great and his offspeed stuff was crap. Morales was scratched because of a sore lat and, though his rehab hasn't been halted, there's no certainty when he gets back on the hill. Neither of them represents a viable option to Bard at the moment.

To your point, he's put zeros on the scoreboard in four of his last five appearances, only one hit in his last three. A bit around the strike zone but certainly no worse than Miller. He's a long way from the last stop in POR but perhaps moving in the right direction.

Regardless, my point was only that this need not necessarily "interrupt what he's doing for just a couple days" as you suggested. They could keep him longer than just a few days... and he may have hit a point that they thought it was worth checking at MLB.

Bard optioned to Portland, Hanrahan activated from the DL.

Not just yet. The corresponding move for Bard has not yet been announced. Given the day off they'll wait until sometime on Tuesday to make it official with Hanrahan. Teams will delay until the last minute just to avoid freak injuries tying their hands.

– Right-hander Joel Hanrahan likewise struggled to find the strike zone, throwing eight of 17 pitches for strikes. Still, he worked around those control difficulties to log a scoreless inning in which he worked around a leadoff walk. He’ll be activated on Tuesday in Toronto.

Still has command issue. 97 is nothing if he can't throw it consistently for strikes. I hope he isn't place in the closer role or tight ball games right away.
