Chris Vernon @ChrisVernonShow
I was just told that Marc Gasol will be named NBA Defensive Player of Year

Can't say it wasn't deserving... Was hoping Timmy got it, (but knew he probably wouldn't, thought he was deserving as well) but can't be mad at this. Props to MG

I thought Noah/LeBron/George had a legit shot to win it.
Oh well, congrats to Big Marc

I'm 100% fine with this.

anchored the league's best (or second best) defense. insanely impressive on/off numbers.

Awesome, absolutely awesome.

Casual fans will not understand this decision at all, given he isn't an elite rebounder/shot-blocker (good but not great), and the fact that a lot of fans just hate the Gasols, but no big man commands interior space better than him right now.

Would be nice huh? Bowen never did which I still don't understand, Tony Allen get's overlooked, etc... Artest won it like 10 years ago, and Gary Payton in 95-96. Other than that, it's PF's and C's. (since GP won it)

If Howard would've played defense the way he has for the last 30 games or so he would've been the DPOY easily

I think the rule changes have made it damn near impossible to lock guys down on the perimeter and it truly takes a 2 man effort, with a ton of help from the big man, to stop penetration nowadays. It seems the bigs are responsible for guarding both the guards/high screens AND protect the paint/rim more than ever.

I think what did Noah in was simply missing too many games, otherwise he probably could've gotten it.

There's just so many games that M. Gasol just takes care of the other elite bigs in the league:

Grizz v. Lakers, Nov. 23: (106 -98 W)

Howard: 2-7 FG (3-6 FT), 7 points, 4 blocks, 1(!) defensive rebound (4 in total)
Gasol: 5-8 FG (4-4 FT), 14 pts, 2 blocks, 5 rebounds, 8 assists

Grizz v. Knicks, Nov. 16 (105-95 W)

Chandler: 3-4 FG (1-2 FT), 7 points, 0 blocks, 7 rebounds (4 defensive)
Gasol: 6-10 FG (12-13 FT), 24 points, 1 block, 7 rebounds (6 defensive)

Grizz v. Bulls, Jan. 19 (85-82 W)

Noah: 5-11 FG, 10 points, 2 blocks, 5 rebounds (3 defensive)
Gasol: 7-10 FG (5-8 FT), 19 points, 1 block, 8 rebounds (5 defensive)

It's not simply a matter of putting up big rebound/block totals. Gasol wipes better rebounders out completely almost every game.

They only player to stop a play with his shoe this year.Marc Gasol is not an athlete he can't jump ect..But he is so smart that he reads the play before it even happens and I'm glad people outside of Memphis saw it.

He also leads the NBA in game winning blocks with 4 everyone else has only 1.

He does see things before they even happen. Rarely is he caught out of position, and he doesn't let his man get deep catches.

well deserved though, congrats to Gasol

Well deserved.

I love watching him play help defense. He's always ready to shut down penetration from the perimeter and you never see him out of position. He's by far the biggest factor in that Mem defense being top 3 (at worst) in the NBA

Never thought I'd see "Gasol" and "defensive player of the year" in the same sentence. All joking aside though well deserved. Gasol has been a very good player in all facets this year. Kind of makes you realize Jerry West knew what he was doing when he made the move. Dumped a player during rebuild to get a very good prospect for the future. God do I wish he was still an executive for us.

I'm super stoked to see him win it. Duncan has enough hardware. So does Howard, who wasn't deserving of the award this season anyway. You could make a case for Noah or Hibbert, but Gasol is the best overall player of the three and his team has the superior record, so I think he deserves it. I'm glad to see him coming out from behind his brother's shadow and building his own legacy, because he's a fun player to watch and crazy talented.

I hate when awards get dumbed down like this. "Best player on best defensive team" argument is weak. It takes more than one player to make a defensive team, and it takes an offensive style that fits and a defensive scheme that everyone buys into.
Gasol is a good nba defender, but I would argue that Tim Duncan and Joakim Noah carried a heavier load defensively this season, and played better. Dwight Howard has had a really good year defensively too, the hype surrounding him is that he hasn't though, and that is fine I don't care about him.
I thought maybe even Lebron would get it this year, provided he's played good defense all year. I don't think a wing player will win this award as long as we are okay with results like this one.

That he does, though he's never won DPOY before. I thought he had a case this year, and him getting it at this point in of his career would've been awesome, but I'm fine with Gasol getting it.

It's tough, because just like MIP, it's a completely subjective award, there's no real way of determining who is most deserving and there are almost always half a dozen guys who could easily win it. If Duncan had won it, it easily would have been justifiable, just as it would have been if Hibbert, Noah or Lebron had won it. In the end, though, I think Gasol's case was probably slightly stronger than everyone else's.

Well earned for Gasol this year.

I think he deserves it more for how he can change opposing offenses. He's physical and has a mean attitude. Two things I would want in a paint defender.

I think he goes will with Randolph, who is very active on the boards but who isn't known as a defensive stopper.

I have a feeling all the new stats out there won it for Gasol. Look at the DPOY winners of the not so distant past, it used to be all about Blks and Rebs. This marks the 2nd year in a row that a positional defender with strong advanced metrics won it.

Tony Allen was my pick. Marc is a very good defender but I think he's getting little too much credit for Grizz defense. Grizz is a very strong defensive unit. Conley, Allen, Prince on the perimeter is a suffocating unit.

Lebron coming in 2nd place here, Ibaka in 3rd. The voters either clearly do not really watch/study defense, or only base it off the 2nd half of the season. We all know Lebron can lock someone up, but Miami was getting lit up early on, he's got that switch there he can turn it up a notch when needed. But that should not be what the DPOY is about, cause you have guys doing it on a nightly basis, and it's their specific job to be that defensive anchor for the team.

Then you have Ibaka, who got 14 first place votes, while Iggy & Allen combined got 14. Makes no sense at all.
