can he play in the playoffs??

i think so. free agents at a certain date (which he certainly hit) can be signed whenever and play. recent cuts (stephen jackson) can't because they weren't FA at whatever that time point was. that's what i gathered from capt. jax getting cut, at least.

Someone called this the other day and it made perfect sense. tMac can give what Pop is asking for, he doesn't need greatness out of him, just a team oriented game

Idk what TMac has left inthe tank as far as NBA game but early this season overseas he was inthe best shape he's been in in over 7 years. That soft body was gone.

Tracy McGrady is playoff eligible. The only people who aren't playoff eligible are the players who were on another NBA team after March 1.

This would have made a ton of sense too. TMac wouldn't have been their Kobe 2.0, but with DH, Nash, Pau, and Metta he could have been a solid addition. He can still score as a later option and he can distribute, which they will be lacking.

This is true regarding players that were on an NBA roster this season before being cut. However, if you were not on an NBA roster, you could be signed by any playoff-bound team anytime up until the last day of the regular season, when playoff rosters are due.

That they were... Remember hearing they had the billboards in Orlando ready and everything.

Regarding the signing, it's obvious they were thin at the SF spot with Jack out. T-Mac did work out with the Spurs before the season started too just as an FYI, so thinks wouldn't be totally foreign. I like it. Gives us an extra body, whether he has anything left remains to be seen. Jack wasn't happy with playing solely Leonard's backup. Don't think T-Mac will mind.

I wonder if this means that Manu will actually be out more than originally expected. Hopefully he's still in shape and can shoot/create. Anyone know what T-Mac was doing past year or so? Euro? China? Or on the couch.
I'm assuming this will be the rotation until Manu comes back, Tmac will prlly have limited mins.
PG: TP9/De Colo/Tmac
SG: Green/Neal/TMac
SF: Leonard/Tmac
PF: Duncan/Blair
C: Splitter/Bonner

Manu is supposed to play tomorrow, he's ready to go. This is probably due to the loss of Jack & Diaw, and giving an extra body to play sparingly behind Kawhi.

He played in China earlier this season, so conditioning shouldn't be too big a deal:

Alex Kennedy ‏@AlexKennedyNBA 2m
The San Antonio Spurs have signed Tracy McGrady. He played in China earlier this season, averaging 25 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.1 assists.

Jack will be missed, but he hasn't played great this season. Hasn't shot the ball well since breaking his finger. Offensively, I can't see T-Mac being worse.

I'm glad you consider this an opportunity for your Nuggs to make it to the WCF now however. It's a possibility of course, just your theory is interesting.

You don't see any former Allstar in the bench.
You don't see any former scoring champ in the bench.
You don't see any former franchise player in the bench.

Jackson is ballsy

Tmac is smarter

Spurs weren't willing to gamble on the ballsy guy getting lucky again when hes this cancerous.

Just so we have the facts right - Tmac played in China this year for the last placed Chinese team who went 8-24. Seems like a desperate reach for offense on a defense oriented disciplined team.

Desperate reach? I guess that depends on how you view it but I dont think they expect much offense from him individually, just for his passing talent to pick up on their motion offense quicker than your typical FA pick up.

Not sure what your post is trying to get at, dont see how it devolved into you mentioning irrelevant facts, what my post was about was Jacko not being worth the gamble. And the improvement Tmac brings on him.

I think its pretty safe to say its an inconsequential difference in any context, unless your argument is that Jacko was something of an important contributor. In which case, I wouldn't care why you feel its a downgrade, the objective measures point to a guy who was out of his element and no longer worth the gamble. Tmac is a gamble himself, but mostly due to injury/rust factors, there is no question he has a higher ceiling than Jack-O.

not bad for a 10 to 15 minute player. He has excellent court vision, very good shooter, great ball skills, solid rebounder and Popp can extract whatever juice he has left in him. You could do a lot worse then him.

Thats sort of what I see out of it. Green and Kawai can up the load to take account for Jack's minor role and TMac is sort of the 'point' for the second unit like Manu was, the half court offense will run through him, he's a great playmaker. I love the pickup if his knees hold up.

Parker is healthy, Manu is healthy. Both are probably out of rhythm, but both are healthy. They're not looking for tmac, nor was Jack going to put them over the top. It's simply to have another body who can play the 3 spot behind Kawhi Leonard.

Like I keep telling folks, gotta do your research before you make foolish comments.

Wow. Interesting development.

Between TMac's CBA performance this season and the Spurs' record for scouting, I think it would be an error to underestimate how much TMac has left in the tank.

Older or not, TMac can still score and pass the ball pretty darn well.

Spurs-Rockets would sure make for an interesting dynamic if Houston ends up as the 7th seed...

Arbitrary?

Unless there is a stat that converts points scored in the Chinese league to points scored in the NBA, then I think arbitrary is a fitting word there.

I understand he will score less (obviously being a backup) and I agree with the rest of his post, but simply stating 25 points in China = 8 points here is probably incorrect.

Talent sets the ceiling. Drive allows a player to reach it. Him and his cousin were special. They could've been the greatest players of their era (they had a couple of good runs in them).

He was a lazy bum. He even admit he never gave it his all in practice. Its sad because I actually really liked Tmac (have his jersey, his shoes), but hes basically known as a loser. Sorry but I can't respect someone who basically cried after losing to the Jazz ---- "Its on me!" before the series is over. After series is over and they lost, its "What more can I do? Talent doesn't equate to skillset. There have been plenty talented players that don't even make it, thats because they never developed/honed their skills. THOSE are the truly lazy. If all your saying is that Mac is the laziest of players that actually put in the work to establish themselves then I can understand, even with your lack of evidence.

But your examples do a poor job of crowning him the laziest, if not being a great practice player is one of them, then I guess Bill Russel was a slob, he absolutely loathed practice.

Put yourself in his shoes, Drs have told you that you won't last physically, would you go all out in scrimmages? He already bested his docs prognosis on top of his first coach who said he lacked the drive to last.

Sorry but you dont accomplish that by being lazy, you dont win MOST IMPROVED PLAYER by being lazy, nor do you dinah worth more AllNBA selections than all but like 20 ish players without working on your craft.

Success is about innate talent and a developed skillset.

If Tmac cared more, he could've won championships. He was a 6-9 player with PG playmaking skills. He had great dribbling skills. He was smooth. He was athletic and could shoot. Theres no reason for him to not win at least 1 MVP and carrying a team to the conference finals.

No amount of "caring" is going to change Grant Hills ankles, the curvature in his spine, Yao's foot etc.....
If anything, his own drive to create something is what cost him a title.
He could have chosen to go to Indiana/San Antonio when they were winning 60+ games, instead he chose Houston, because while he didn't want to stay on a rebuilding/last placed squad, he still wanted something of a challenge.

He was a 6-9 player with PG playmaking skills. He had great dribbling skills. He was smooth. He was athletic and could shoot.
You make it sound as if those skills were accomplished without effort, how can you be the laziest player in NBA history, yet have such a rare combination of skills. 6"8 players dont just magically learn how to handle the rock in such a manner.

Theres no reason for him to not win at least 1 MVP and carrying a team to the conference finals.

Except for the fact that basketball isnt a 1 on 1 game and that Tmac's prime was cut short due to injury.

I didnt' say Tmac was a lazy bum who only wanted to get intoxicated every day (see Keon Clark). I use to be a Tmac apologist as well, but I saw the light when he said the Rockets would suck without him and then they went and pushed the Lakers to game 7 in the 2nd round (2009).

Hey guys, I'm just curious, but did anyone make a TMac getting out of the first round joke yet? Or can maybe one more person make the super obvious comment? T Mac can be a better version of Manu off the bench, he can still shoot the ball, he's still 6'8 and can still post people up in that mid range area, and he's a really underrated passer. He's always been streaky so he can steal the spurs a game or two just by giving them a punch off the bench.

Conditioning thing i think. He hasn't done anything the last month or so. He's got 3 days to try and pick up on things that they like to do, so maybe he'll see a few minutes here and there in the playoffs. They really don't know what they're going to do with him yet.
