04-13-2013, 01:22 AM
Wow.... I wanted the Lakers to be 100 percent healthy going into the playoffs, regardless of whether I wanted them to win or to lose. I didn't want it to happen like this. If you're Kobe, don't you have to seriously consider retirement at this point in your career? But knowing his level of determination, he'll dedicate himself like crazy and come back sometime late next season just to prove his doubters wrong.

I never thought the Lakers had a chance in the playoffs, but the real question now is what this means for Dwight's re-signing. If you're Dwight Howard, do you want to to return to a team with absolutely no depth and without its No. 1 option? They won't have any chance whatsoever to sign anyone of value in free agency and Gasol probably will not be enough on his own to get the Lakers to the playoffs.

Not only could this be a blow for the end of Kobe's career, it could really damage the Lakers' chances to retain Dwight.

Doesn't matter. Without Kobe, they have no chance. A torn achilles? 6-8 months on average.

Obviously that's the focal point of this, but I do think Dwight's future is a huge piece to this story if it's true. As determined as Kobe is, at best, he'll be back at the tail end of the next season. At that point, the Lakers could already be out of the playoff picture and Kobe will be 35. Why would Dwight want to stay with the Lakers to make a run with a 36-year-old Kobe Bryant in 2015?

C'mon, man. It's a horrible thing, but the dude's not dead. If this is the end, he had one of the most prolific careers in the history of the NBA and we went out like a ****ing viking. To call it the "saddest day in sports" is a bit of an exaggeration.

However, I have the most utmost respect for his game and I was both disappointed and sad to hear the news. I'm watching the locker room interview and you can feel the sadness in Kobe's voice. Whether you love the guy or hate him, it's unfortunate that this NBA warrior is out. Really put everything out there to try and push this joke of a Laker team into the playoffs (I mean joke as in mainly Dwight Howard). If it is a torn Achillies, hopefully he recovers quickly so he's ready next year. I can imagine every Laker Fan's heart just jumped out of their chest, especially Nikdymez.

If this doesn't say, D'antoni is gone after this year, then I don't know what does. Who in the **** thinks that playing a 17yr veteran ****ing 48mins per game, is going to end well?!

As much as the Lakers are like the Villain team of the West, I don't think anyone can honestly question Kobe's willingness to give it all every night. That's a damn shame after fighting so hard to get back into the playoff picture. With guys like him, I doubt he's really considering retirement already. He's still chasing records and solidifying a reputation other than being "in the shadow of MJ" and who knows, maybe he'll make it to Steve Nash or Jason Kidd kinds of player-age before hanging it up.

It won't be the be of Kobe. He's already laughing and is "pissed off" because people think it's the end. He will come back mid way through next season and play it out. Maybe it's in his best interest to stop being "the man" in LA. Take a back seat to Dwight, let the Lakers resign Dwight for their future, take less of a load off himself in the process and become a Robin again

Rather than killing himself every night, fatigued as all **** at his age and mileage. I hate Kobe, but this sucks.

To be honest this is the best thing for the Lakers. Sad for Kobe yes, but the Lakers as a team This is perfect timing. It gives them two tune up games with out Kobe for the playoffs to get in sync. I'm a Lakers fan. But I enjoyed the games when they were playing team ball. They have a much better shot in the playoffs now. Pau said it before the game. They needed to move the ball more, he was talking about Kobe. This I think was Dtoni's plan all along run Kobe down and out. Now Nash can come back and run the team the way Dtoni wants. And this will also help keep Dwight. If he leads this team deep in the playoffs, I think he stays.

Kobe Bean tried to defy logic when it was impossible. At 34-years-old, when his counterparts Iverson and McGrady are out of the league, because of injury and old age, Kobe was trying to play 48 minutes a night when he's playing tens of thousands in his career and 17 seasons.

Kobe will never, ever be the same. Baron Davis suffered this injury at 34 and won't ever play again. Billups doesn't remotely look the same. D'Antoni's signing and usage of Kobe Bryant will go down as one of the worst decisions in Laker history.

I've never liked Kobe. Never liked what he stood for. What he was chasing in Michael Jordan. The Colorado incident. His attitude. The way he treats his wife. The whole package. It's fitting that for a guy who wants to be Iron Man that he finally realizes he's human.

An all-time great, but the Lakers franchise will never be the same. Kobe will not be at this level when he returns - if he returns. We'll all assume he will, but it's much more likely that at 35 years old in mid February 2014, he'll return a 18-20 PPG with no athleticism what so ever.

Dantoni took years off Amares career. He forced Lin into a knee injury. Melo first hurt his knee because of the minutes Dantoni played him. And now he could have just forced Kobe to effectively retire

I will say this, the team has to make the playoffs. Kobe's carried their ***** and literally left everything out there tonight to get them in that dance. They have to make it they owe him that to a man. Pau owes him that for always taking up for him. Dwight owes him that if he truly wants to show he learned what it means to be a laker like he said he wanted Kobe to show and teach him.

And Nash and Dantoni especially owe him that much. Nash owes him that much because he literally ran all the treat off his tires doing his job at PG, defending his assignments, and because he was too much of a ***** to suit up and play with a damn bruise and offer Kobe any rest at all. Likewise Dantoni owes him that because Kobe was literally averaging 45mpg his last 20 games with the Indy game where he played 12 mins

They owe him that much as a team because when they look at him, none of them can say on that team besides Metta they carried their own damn weight this year ... He did until he couldn't hold it anymore, ffs, this **** sucks

Lakers are a disgrace 2-13 (not including Metta in this) and coaching staff if they don't win out and make the playoffs, a guy literally watching that game, gave everything to he had no more to make sure they stayed in the race and controlled their own fate. They have to win out to honor him and that sacrifice or just blow their ***** up

Your Rockets better not rest starters when they play LAL in the season finale...

Don't forget Metta is out there playing with a torn meniscus. He played Metta more minutes than he's ever played as a laker and had him guarding PFs to boot while Pau and Dwight were hurt. Metta risked it all to comeback early after 12 days because he said he couldn't wonder what if, but he's been hurt a bunch this year too.

I think he will have to be a whole new position sadly. A PG or SF, a total different guy butnthennagain if there's a bastard stubborn enough to be able to regain what he had mostly it would be him

Kobe did it on purpose :O now dwight will walk and the lakers will go 21-61 next year and land Andrew Wiggins.

But seriously... I am not a Lakers or KOBE fan but I feel ****** about this injury.
To be fair its everything Dwight would possibly want. It's his team now, it has to be. Sink or swim for him as he looks terrible if he walks away. And they all look bad if they dont honor his sacrifice and win these last two games as his last act was making sure they were in the playoffs and controlled their own destiny, not Utah or anyone else, just like he promised

Dwight better play his @** off. He needs to dominate and learn from his fellow teammate. Kobe wants to win more than any player in the NBA. I feel so bad for him. The dude never gets help at times. He makes it a personal matter. He played until he couldn't. That is insane. Learn Dwight.

Ok, blaming MD'T is stupid. Please honestly tell me you don't think Kobe wanted to be on the floor in those close games trying to secure the 8th seed. The two blowouts he could have rested but it wouldn't have changed what happened. Look at the replay, it was his lowcut shoe that did him in. Very little ankle support at his age is begging for an injury.

It sucks but blaming Mike makes no sense, you might as well blame Jack N for not yelling loud enough.

He'll be back some time next season and probably call it quits after that. I blame Lakers management (which includes the late Jerry Buss) though. They should've known that this team needed to get younger and more athletic on the wing. Instead they got old (Nash..smh). Also should have made some kind of move for Dwight when it was obvious that this team was going nowhere. Now Dwight will leave and you're left with a mid round first pick on a bad team.....Lakers set themselves back by the way they've handled the past two offseasons.....

in a 2 point game with 3 minutes left? Kobe would have **** his pants laughing at MD'T trying to pull him in that situation. Utah and Dallas both won earlier, Kobe would have been aware and I doubt wanted to go down a game with SA still to play on their schedule.

the biggest difference b/n those teams and the Lakers is depth. Kobe played so much because of their lack of it. The way they played Kobe, it was just waiting to happen. Now, because of the way they played Kobe people will point the fingers at the coach.

THIS.

I'll bet you that every player in the NBA is injured or hurt right now. Question is about the extent of that injury and the heart of the player.

Kobe for example is too damn competitive and there's nearly nothing that will keep him out.

Derrick Rose on the other hand is POS who wants to live off the $120 million contract that Adidas gave him.

what coach puts a 34 yr. old to guard 20 something yr. old PGs and play 40+ mins! homie seriously the coach couldn't say no? Kobe's 34 not 24. He has to live w/ that day in and day out. Honest question.....who should be replacing Kobe for his minutes? It is a poorly constructed team. Nash was the wrong pickup for this team in the offseason. Kobe demands the ball so any offense established pretty much takes Dwight and Gasol out of the consistent mix.

Kobe drains a 3... down 3

Get a stop... buries another 3. Tie game.

Down 109-107. Drives... tears his achilles (LA staff saying its a full tear-according to Kevin Ding). Comes back, hits 2 freethrows to tie it.

Lakers should have looked to add a backup sg/sf with size that could have taken some minutes away from Kobe. At least Laker fans can see Nash really run this team. He is still one of the best at running a team with the ball in his hands constantly. With Kobe Nash took kinda a 'robin' role in that category.

I would say that Kobe needing the ball in his hands takes Nash out of the game more. Gasol was used to Kobe and has won with him more. Dwight needed to find out how to be effective without the ball and he hasn't. Nash did change his game but he always benefited with having control of the offense.
