The Red Sox have granted veteran first baseman Lyle Overbay his release from his minor league contract to pursue other opportunities, according to a major league source.
Overbay has been trying to win a spot on Boston's bench as a backup to Mike Napoli, but the team appears to be leaning toward a combination of Daniel Nava and Mike Carp for that role. Overbay seemed to be competing with Carp and Ryan Sweeney for a spot on the Red Sox bench.

Sweeney has an opt out on March 28, so a decision will have to be made on him as well.

Overbay has drawn some interest in NYC as the Yankees try to piece together a starting lineup that can be displaced by their big money stars when they heal.

Bit of a surprise IMO, thought Overbay would be a solid bench player for this season.

^ That's not much of a surprise. The Yank$ are snatching up every former 'name' player out there.

Watch him go 4-4 with 6 RBI's in the first game against us. Always happens. :laugh2:
