View Full Version : Duncan mentoring some young players

Tim Duncan had just pivoted along the baseline, positioning his body between Thompson and the basket, pinning the Cavaliers’ young big man to his hip in order to create an unobstructed path to two points.

“Once he sealed me off, I was like, ‘Oh snap,’ ” Thompson said.

“Tim’s been phenomenal,” said Thompson, who was a first-grader in Toronto when Duncan made his NBA debut in 1997. “He’s helped me a lot with my game, helping me learn the game not just physically but mentally. He’s definitely a mentor of mine.”

The list of those the two-time MVP and four-time NBA champion has helped tutor also includes All-Stars Roy Hibbert of Indiana and LaMarcus Aldridge of Portland, as well as New Orleans’ Anthony Davis, the No. 1 pick in last June’s draft.

“I just want to work out, honestly,” Duncan said. “Whoever’s willing to work out, I’ll work out with anybody. It makes the summers go by better. It makes me better. I’m available to do that, so I like doing that.”

Pretty cool to see Timmy doing that with some of these guys. Aldridge seems to have a lot of success against us, so maybe Tim should scratch him off the list of guys he'll help :p (J/K...)

I wonder what other players if any will be next , and not only from the basketball point of view, but the mental aspect Thompson discussed, probably staying poised, not rushing, trying to block out trash talk etc...

As a kid, I hated Duncan. As I got older, that changed. Duncan is such a class act. Very humble guy. Lot of respect for him.

Very rarely do I let the decline stage of a player effect my overall rankings, but the way TD has continued to play is going to change that for me. I hope he has another semi dominant playoff run, I hope its not at my teams expense but if he kills us again, I will have no problem rooting for him the rest of the way.

If Davis can get that post game polished.... He seems to have a nice mid range shot as it is, and his defensive abilities are there.

You never know! He's young enough that he can make all the right moves. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders too

would love to see timmy work out jonas in the offseason. That kid's a sponge, love to see him learn some tricks from a master.

Duncan is the main reason I had zero issue rooting for the Spurs to go all the way after they waxed my team last year in the playoffs. The guy is just such an amazing person, top 5 player all time and it's downright incredible that he can still dominate any given game with little effort and in limited minutes. I wish BG would work out with Duncan...

Timmy will be training with Hibbert again this summer-

“I usually work out with Tim [Duncan]. I like to keep myself a secret, but then I’ll go off to San Antonio to work out with Tim for a week or two, probably in August. He likes to get started after August.”

I wonder if he will look into a career as an assistant coach somewhere upon retirement.

I would LOVE for him to come give Len some pointers.

Hibbert had such a dramatic shift in his on court demeanor since working with Duncan. Seems like the game has slowed down for him, and he sees the play develop before it happens. Been a blessing for the Pacers.

He and Duncan have seem to have become really good friends. They text each other often and exchange scouting reports on other teams. I hope to see Hibbert continue to grow, he is one of the few bigs in the league who uses his size to his advantage and he seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

He needs to stop helping Hibbert, lol asap

Hopefully Oden signs with Miami, and Duncan helps him out then but doubt hes that nice...Wonder if he charges 100k like Hakeem does

lol... na he doesn't charge, he does it cause he just loves playing the game he said. And I bet he would work with Oden even if he went to Miami. He's worked with Lamarcus Aldridge who routinely has good games against the Spurs.

He doesn't charge. He said that playing against the young guys makes him better too.

Any young big man is an idiot if they don't take the opportunity to learn from the best.
