As a former nemesis of Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, and many others, Bruce Bowen was long one of the NBA’s nastiest defenders. Years after retirement, his most dangerous plays still draw traffic on YouTube.

And even Bowen thought Dahntay Jones crossed a line, endangering Bryant, on the decisive play of the Lakers’ key road loss to the Hawks on Wednesday night.

"Replay shows he kind of walked up under him a little bit there," said Bowen on ESPN. "You're wondering why is he continuing to walk toward Kobe at that particular moment."

Bryant (who has been upset by Jones fouls in the past) was livid postgame, telling reporters and his Twitter followers that the league needs to do more to protect shooters.

"As defensive players, you can contest shots, but you can't walk underneath players," Bryant said. "That's dangerous for the shooter."

Even if I weren't a Laker fan, this would upset me. The players of this league aren't protected enough, they take out hand-checking, which by the way is harmless but allow players to walk under shooters and have no repercussion? Jones should be suspended, or at least fined, if not by the league then the NBA Players Association.

The NBA should want to protect its superstars but the NBAPA should want to protect them more, they're who they represent, if one player does something intentional against another player that's an "unwritten rule" then they should speak out, but they don't, probably because the PA only cares about getting more money rather than the health and safety of the players on the floor.

Daunte is a punk *****, plain and simple.

I mean it should have been a foul. Even if they called it he most likely would have still gotten hurt. But the fact is if that was 3 min left in the first they would have called it. But at the end of the game the refs always swallow their whistle.

If the league suspended everyone who accidentally walked under a shooter a little bit, half the league would be suspended in 2 weeks.

The league should also suspend every defender for boxing out a guy and grabbing a rebound. That offensive player boxed out can roll his ankle when he lands on his opponents foot or heel. In fact, the NBA should just ban jumping from the sport entirely.

Sarcasm aside, changing anything regarding the rules of this sort of play is a slippery slope of enabling MORE judgement of intent - not a good thing basketball at all.

Dirty, intentional, dangerous - whatever the play was, it is already a clearly defined foul in the league. Nothing should change other than perhaps an official blowing the whistle.
