View Full Version : DAntoni Wanted Knicks to Resign David Lee, not sign Amare in 2010

Mike D'Antoni wanted the New York Knicks to re-sign David Lee instead of pursuing Amar'e Stoudemire in the free agent summer of 2010, according to a report.

The Knicks ultimately signed Stoudemire to a lucrative five-year contract that offseason -- uninsured despite his knee issues -- as Lee signed with the Golden State Warriors.

Stoudemire will miss the next six weeks because of debridement in his right knee.

So replace Lee with Amare, would they be better?

Do you think Melo would still want to be a Knick had they not signed Amare and kept Lee?

Regardless of Amare's shortcomings heathwise and as much as I love David Lee - the Knicks would not have been a top 3 team in the east this season if we didnt get Amare that year.

I agree, they are both terrible defensively, but a healthy Amare > Lee. And Im actually a big lee fan lol

LMAO @ Stoudemire being better than Lee IF healthy. That's a BIG IF. Lee is STILL better when Stoudemire IS healthy. Lee is an elite passer/facilitator at this position, leads the league in double doubles, and is one of the best rebounders in the game.

David Lee is BETTER.

The Knicks team would likely be more youth driven but still much worse if we didnt sign amare. I much rather go all in for the next 3 years than hang around 5-7th seed with a young team for 8 years.

Donnie Walsh was not a good GM. For every one good move he made about 10 stupid ones. If Grunwald was GM instead of him wed be better now than we currently are

considering they probably woudl still have mozgov GALLINARI, and chandler.

maybe they should have waited for cp3 and dwight-

They might have been better off with Lee, who can handle more of a secondary role than Stoudemire.
But seriously; why would you ever take D'Antoni seriously? I repeat, as always: No D'Antoni-coached team will ever win a championship. And I personally think New York would have been better off not blowing up their team, but doing like the Thunder did and slowly adding pieces to that young core they had. Instead, the Knicks have an already washed-up big three that has no chance of winning a championship with its current make-up.

Lee would be very useful to them right now. Outside of Melo they don't have a consistent scorer.

lol, please

He's more useful to us right now.

You only need 47 wins to be a "top 3" seed in the east. 47 wins doesn't even guarantee a playoff spot in the west.

Go back and look at STAT's production his first year in NY. Look at his string of 30 point games. How he carried us to a winning record and was top 5 in MVP discussion at the half-way point. THAT got Melo's attention. THAT got Melo to begin to the force the trade. Even with that Brooklyn and re-signing with Denver to keep his bird rights was still an option...David Lee does not even get us close to that level.

anyone who plays > someone who doesn't

that's why it's called a player. not a sitter or a coach.

Lee would be good right now with no Amare or Melo, I don't think Melo would go to the Knicks at that point probably the Nets.

I love Lee's offensive game but his D is even worse than Amare's, if you can even fathom that. Plus, Knicks fans saw what an Amare led team did, which was better than a Lee led team. In all honesty, I don't want either guy on my team if I could have my way.

Hindsight is definitely 20/20.

I'm thinking if we go back to that Free Agency period, most people would have chosen Amar'e over Lee.

Good thing they play in the East because they're nothing but a 6 seed and 1st round loser in the West!
