View Full Version : LBJ's Free Throw Shooting

LBJ is playing like a GOAT this season. No doubt about it. His FG percentage is at an insanely high rate: .565? Seriously? From a guy who shoots 3.5 3pt a game? And .420 from behind the arc? Not to mention his rebounding and assist numbers and defensive stats. But there is one thing that is for some odd reason is only slightly above average about him: His free throw shooting. Now, don't get me wrong, it's not like Shaq or Wilt or Dwight. Nobody is going to be pulling a hack-a-King any time soon. He does have a respectable .748 from the charity stripe, but have you ever seen such a great shooter post such an average percentage from the line? I mean, this guys is shooting .420 from the arc! And .565 from the floor. I'd imagine his FT% would be somewhere around 85-90% judging from his other shooting percentages.

I haven't seen a wing player with such a high percentage since Stockton, and not even he was shooting as his as .565! But he always shot over .800 from the free throw line (there are two seasons when he came up short of that mark). Neither Jose Calderon's FG or 3pt percentages were where LBJ's are in his 09 campaign, but he shot .981 from the FT line. Jordan never posted FG or 3pt percentages as high as LBJ is doing this season, yet .shot 835 for his career from the free throw line to LBJ's .747?

It seems that judging from the percentages LBJ's posting, his FT percentage should be among the league leaders. He is a great shooter after all. Does anybody else find it odd that LBJ's FT% is so, average (or should I say slightly above average), considering how great he is at everything else? Any suggestions as to the reason for this?

LBJ is having perhaps the best season I have ever seen a player have(I've been watching since 89), so this is not meant as a knock, just a question. It just seems odd to me.

theres nothin odd about it.. take a look at his breakdown from distances on hoopdata.com, he just isnt a good 10-15ft shooter.

that obv can be fixed with more repetition, and he said his goal is to improve that area to at least 80%, so lets see how he improves.

He's a pretty average free throw shooter. It is what it is. Honestly his jumper isn't that great.

from 10-15ft, otherwise in other areas its above average. just check out the breakdown on hoopdata.com for more info and compare among who you view as "elite shooters"

With the way he works to improve (and succeeds at doing so), would anyone be surprised if LBJ came back next year shooting 85%+ from the FT line?

It's why he'll never be the GOAT tbh.

If he cant hit his free throws at 98% he'll never be the goat.

Thanks... I've actually never been to hoopdata... I've always relied exclusively on BBR. That is interesting indeed! Kobe is actually a much better mid-range jump shooter than LBJ, though LBJ is a stronger finisher and better 3pt shooter.

Dude is a beast. As close to the perfect player as there is out there.

He shoots must of his shots a lot closer to the basket. Field Goal percentage counts dunks, so it's not like he's shooting 20 footers all day, Jose Calderon shoots mostly jumpers. Lebron doesn't shoot mostly jumpers.

Also, some players have a different rhythm at the foul stripe, so when their free throw percentage isn't very good it could be because they aren't in as good a rhythm as they are when they're taking normal shots.

wrong.
he attempts 18 field goal attempts per game, and 6 of them are at the rim.

thanks for playing.
and he is a better 16-23 ft shooter than 10-15ft.

lets be serious for a second, even if he averages 50ppg while winning 6 titles, he wont be the goat

Shaq couldn't hit FTs and he's still one of the top 3 most dominant players ever. Lebron will be too.

I'm not concerned about his free throws at all. He's taking less FT's per game and thus that decreases his FG%. He's definitely not getting the calls he should be getting. Maybe the refs don't think it's fair since LBJ has been dominating everything already.

this is why you need to visit hoopdata. That isn't true over the past few years anymore, its just a misconception.

Over the past 4 seasons, Free Throw Attempts Per Game.

09-10: 10.2 (77%) 29ppg

10-11: 8.4 (76%) 26ppg

11-12: 8.1 (77%) 27ppg

12-13: 6.2 (75%) 27ppg

My takeaways, he's taking the fewest free throws per game since his rookie season when he averaged 20ppg, he's stabilized his ft%, and he is absolutely destroying from the floor. This is the only season since his rookie season where he has shot fewer than 8 ft per game.

He will never be the goat because his name is not MJ.

...and that really annoys me on most star players when they're getting older.
