I think before this conversation goes any further you have to define "role player".
People mention a guy like Rodman. To me, if you say he is a role player, than anybody can be defined as a role player. Rodman was perhaps the greatest rebounder the game has ever seen. Also, one of the best defenders in the history of the game, and his outlet passes ignited the fast break for Chicago. He was an All-Star and an integral component to the Bulls championships. That is a little more than a "role player".

You could say Jordan was a role player. He played the role of offensive machine and defensive stopper, while also distributing the ball and rebounding well for his position. That was his role.

So let's define role player.

I would say a role player is a non-all-star/peripheral player who seldom has plays run for him but who fills a niche and whose performance, though not the main component of the game plan, helps the team to succeed.

by this definition Rodman and Ben Wallace are off the table as they were both All-Stars and their performance was a key component to their team's success. That is not to say that a former All-Star can't become a roll player (Bill Walton and Dennis Johnson are great examples of former all-Stars who became role players later in their careers).

Ainge was a great role player. Bowen. Fisher. Cooper. Prince. Horry. Posey has been a key role player on two championship teams. Tony Allen.

And an interesting question: Should role players be considered for the HOF?

To me, Rodman.
You, Dennis, go rebound, defend, and frighten.
