Nickey Maxwell Van Exel, 22, received the punishment after his father wept on the witness stand and apologized to the family of the victim, Bradley Bassey Eyo. The same jury in Dallas County in North Texas found the younger Van Exel guilty of murder on Thursday.

Prosecutors had sought a capital murder conviction.

Nickey Van Exel fatally shot Eyo in December 2010 and dumped his body at Lake Ray Hubbard on the eastern outskirts of Dallas. His attorney had said the two were playing with a shotgun at Nickey Van Exel's Garland home and that Van Exel didn't know the gun was loaded.

Nick Van Excel, who played 13 seasons in the NBA including a stint with the Dallas Mavericks and is now a player development instructor for the Atlanta Hawks, testified about the happy times he and his son spent together, including with Eyo.

He recalled the time that he took his son and Eyo to a 2006 NBA Finals game in Miami between the Heat and the Mavericks.

"And they were about the only guys there cheering for the Dallas Mavericks," he said. "It's dangerous when you go to an arena cheering for the other team."

The elder Van Exel broke down at one point while speaking in court. He then apologized to Eyo's family.

"I'm really sorry to the Eyo family. Nobody should have to go through something like this. Nobody," he said, as he looked at Eyo's family members who were in the courtroom.

They said the younger Van Exel shot his friend with a 12-gauge shotgun as retaliation because Eyo, 23, planned to “snitch” about robberies they committed together in Houston earlier in 2010. Eyo was charged in connection with the robberies, but Van Exel wasn’t because police lacked evidence against him.
Eyo pleaded guilty and was expected to detail the crimes to Harris County authorities at a sentencing hearing. He died 10 days before that hearing.

Update at 11:51 a.m.: Prosecutors apparently discovered this morning that a rap music video tribute to Nickey Van Exel was posted yesterday, the same day he was convicted of murder in the slaying of his friend.

There was some private discussion about the video among the attorneys, but it was not played for the jury during the ongoing punishment phase of the trial. It appears that within minutes of that discussion, the video was pulled off of YouTube.

The song contained a lot of explicit and potentially offensive language, so there isn’t a whole lot I can post here. But it railed against “snitching” on the stand and referenced the gang of which Van Exel is said to be a member. It included this opening:

I dedicate this to my brother

I swear life f—-d up and I feel like throwing in the towel

Cause I got a brother on a murder trial

I got a brother on a murder trial

And I may not see my brother for awhile

I used to like the guy back when he played in LA, up until I found out all the crap hes done throughout his career but no one deserves this.

Sad news for Van Exel and the family of the murder victim.

Kind of makes you wonder how the son of a millionaire basketball player gets wrapped up in gangs and crime like that.

I dont want to point any fingers but I never regarded Van Exel as a high character person, which means I question his parenting techniques. Im sure hes a stand up guy now, he seemed to mature during his playing days but I wonder if its a case of too little too late by that point.

I'll prbably come off presumptious but I freely admit I dont know jack **** about Nick.

Such a shame. Always liked Van Exel, heard he was a great guy, shame he had to go through this.

Rough story. While I heard Van Exel was not a high character guy, its still surprising to me to see his kid get into that kind of lifestyle. A shame really, all the way around.

You never heard of Fathers who name their children after themselves? I have, hell Im one of them. I should have clarified that but I thought the following passage would make it clear.

His son's name is Nickey Maxwell Van Exel, the father's name is Nick Van Exel...

Nick the quick's full name is Nickey Maxwell Van Exel as well. If a Cincy Bearcats' or Lakers' fan came into the forum (and didn't know about the case) and saw the thread title, they'd think it was about #9 himself.

What about self-defense or serving in a foreign war?

Pathetic. If he was really involved in gangs and retaliation killings, then let the SOB rot in jail for the rest of his life.

why are people so stupid? half of the commenters here didn't even read the article. Nick Van Exel did not kill anyone, his son did.

Yeah, I understood that his sons name is the same after reading the article, but you made the thread title misleading in some way. It sounds as a famous basketball player got 60 years for murder. I mean who knows his son and whats his name? Anyway it really doesn't have to do anything with the topic, I just wanted to point that out.

On topic. 60 years for 1 murder? That's almost life sentence. Ain't that too much? In Russia some murderers sit for murder only 5 years sometimes, which I think is a really soft sentence, but 60 years? Wow. I guess different laws in different countries.

In some countries in europe felonies only last for 20 years then your record restarts.

He wont serve 60 years, might have parole, but at the end of the day, homes shouldnt of killed brad

Really sad to hear this news. As a father I know he would switch places with his son for the punishment.

It really comes back to how you raise our kids and what type of principles you try to implement. I am not an older guy or anything but I have kids and I could not imagine what he is going through. Some of these young kids these days have everything backwards. You have to be engaged in everything with kids to make sure they are not doing the wrong things. No excuse for what his son did though.

Sad story.

God damn this homie life over. Even if that homie was to somehow get out like on good behavior he would be like 78.Its kinda crazy though to think about, like you sittin there and you a 22 yr old adult and the judge tells you that you goin to jail until 2073.I feel bad when I think about it like that.

ehhh, he can be out in less than 20 yrs if his lawyer is still working with him and the judge.. His family has money so he has decent legal reps.

I find it fascinating that people are saying they sympathize with the van exel family...

**** the van exels...

My sympathies to the eyo family... The real victims, as in the family who had someone shot by a random thug...

He should of gotten capital punishment...

In Australia, there have been serial killers that have been released in 10 years...

Different laws... I couldn't say which I agree with...

On one hand, you've taken someones life...

On the other, don't people deserve a second chance ???

I live in the us and if my daughters were murdered, I'd want him to be drown or buried alive...

They were both criminals, lets not make the victim into a saint. Now I shall say that I do sympathies with the family of the Eyo. I just feel that when you live the life of a gangster, this is what can come about.

Both families deserve sympathy because both of their lives are impacted. Obviously the vitcims family moreso because they will never get their loved one back but throwing a ridiculous 60 year sentence at a 22 yr old is pretty much a death sentence also.
