View Full Version : Rajon Rondo Tears ACL. Out For Season

Boston-Born
01-27-2013, 03:16 PM
A Celtics source says Rajon Rondo may have suffered a torn ACL, according to Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald.
Uh oh. He was diagnosed with a hyperextended knee at the game by the medical staff, but the MRI reportedly indicated he suffered a ligament tear. Rondo would miss the rest of the season with this injury, but his owners will obviously have to hang in there until this report is confirmed by the team. Avery Bradley will take over at point guard and he's a must-own player in all leagues since he can provide threes and steals to go with points and assists. Courtney Lee also gets a nice boost and is worth owning in standard leagues. Jason Terry has been miserable lately, but he's worth a look for triple-needed owners.

Yeah, we'll have to wait and see. Seems like more of a guess than anything. I've heard conflicting reports that he wasn't going to get an MRI because of an ACL suspicion.

Rondo's impact on this team gets overblown by a lot of people. I don't think the drop off would be Earth shattering, but considering they're kinda sputtering with him, if he does indeed have a torn ACL they should look to blow things up.

However, you can walk pretty much completely fine with a torn ACL. Though, I doubt after a visit to the doctor's office they'd let you just walk around until surgery.

It's really hard to cut...but ACL's aren't really required for stabilization with normal straight-forward walking.

I know most of us aren't doctors/health care professionals, but by now you'd think people would stop saying "he's walking without crutches; he must not have a torn ACL after all". It happens all the time. RGIII most recently.

If the Celtics lose the next few games in bad fashion, I'd be okay with it. If the Celtics still have a losing record in 10 days I don't really like their chances this season and might as well try to get a good lottery pick. Add in the fact that Pierce would be on a pretty bad team and is playing for a championship at this point, he should get traded to a contending team.

That might be true if the Raptors were a contender, but since Toronto is at the bottom of the Atlantic division I don't really see why they'd care who they trade with. It's not like Boston is going to be doing anything in the postseason this year, anyway, and Lowry or Calderon won't change that.

Rondo's impact is so so so overrated (Celts have actually been better offensively this year when he's not on the court, and overall, he has a negative impact (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/rondora01/on-off/2013/)) but the Celts weren't playing that great anyways, so this may lead them to blow it up.

Or maybe their season turns around with Bradley at the point and they get more floor spacing at the 2 with a trade acquisition. One of the issues with their offense now is not enough spacing due to guys like Terry and Lee having disappointing 3 point shooting seasons. Someone like Calderon could actually help their offense as crazy as it sounds. And if you paired him with Bradley in the backcourt, he could help cover for Calderon's aversion to defense.

Boston is a bottom 5 offense this year. Let's not act like Rondo is moving mountains with his offensive play this year. He's not as game-changing as people make him out to be. He can't score; that matters. He's incredibly overrated in how he is regarded as an offensive mastermind and game-changer. He just isn't.

Calderon's shooting would be huge for Boston, who is 3rd to last in 3PT% and 4th to last in 3 pointers made.

Calderon's passing is hardly any worse than Rondo's. They're both ELITE passers Rondo a bit more, but not by a ton.

Rondo's scoring inefficiency can be crippling at times. Calderon doesn't have that problem.

Calderon blows Rondo out of the water in terms of offensive win shares. He's got a better PER. He's a far better scorer and shooter no matter how you split it. He can make FTs (maybe one of the 5 best in the league).

There's little Rondo does better OFFENSIVELY than Calderon. I stand by my claim.

Defensively they'd take a hit, but Boston can afford that.

Exactly. I don't know how much they would have to give up for him.

Maybe I SHOULD send him flowers and write a get well card. Miss you, Rondo.

you can hate the Celtics but when you saying stuff like this is great on so many levels.

Man even the Heat fans had more class than that when Shump and BDiddy got hurt in the playoffs. I don't remember anyone saying that. People hear "getting an MRI on his knee" and immediately jump to "getting an MRI, possible torn ACL". The earliest tweets said it was just to confirm that all he did was hyperextend his knee. That seems to be the case.

However, you can walk pretty much completely fine with a torn ACL. Though, I doubt after a visit to the doctor's office they'd let you just walk around until surgery.

Boston globe confirmed it. Torn ACL. He's DONE.

Boston is not Bulls.. If they couldn't do it without Rondo, what makes you think playing without Rondo makes them better? Right now, it's all up to his teammates to carry the load. Every player has to step up to make it work. Other than Pierce and Garnett, I don't see another consistent player. Bradley is good at defending, sucks at the offensive end.

monty77
01-28-2013, 07:33 AM
It is terrible! He is, in my opinion, a top 3 PG in whole league and all NBA's fans will miss him. As Bulls' fan I am, I understand that this situation is very hard as Boston loose his better player for the rest of the season and they maybe won't reach playoffs spots.

Wost of all is the idea that perhaps he will never be the same player. This dude is the same that I have about Rose, but there is one optimistic reason about Rondo: he don't need physical abilities much as Derrick. Though Rondo also attack the rim, his best skill is passing the ball and this injury won't spoil it.

Otherwise, Boston should think about a end of cycle, as they can't waste one year taking into account that Garnett and Pierce are over 35 years so maybe is chance for players as Bradley, Barbosa, Terry and Lee, that were performing under his real level so far.

Boston still could get some good pieces in exchange for Garnett and Pierce, and Rondo injury is an important fact that maybe will make an important decision in the Celtics course. I hope he recovers and take advantage of this situation to enlarge his shoot range.

Corey is right, outside of the playoffs last year, Rondo's on ball D has sucked for over a year.

Rondo gets a lot of assists because outside of driving the lane (which he doesn't do much anymore because he gets pounded since his FT's suck), and shooting inside of 10' his offense sucks, so his value add is passing. But the other team plays 5 on 4 D on Rondo's teammates because his top of the key and out shooting is so pathetic.

By percentage Rondo gets about 6x more triple doubles on National TV than local TV. He doesn't show up for many games during the year, pulls stupid moves in other games.

If the Celts keep Rondo, than it's time to go full uptempo. That's why I want Pierce, Terry, and Bass dealt now for younger more athletic players and draft picks. The Celts are going noplace in the playoffs this year, with or without Rondo.

That's the problem, you are going on reputation/opinion/subjectives.

This year only, Rondo is at best the 8th best PG, and arguably as low as #12, and if Bledsoe was someplace playing more minutes, perhaps one slot lower for Rondo.

His D is garbage this year - worst of his career. His FT% still sucks. His 3PT% and outside 2PT% sucks. His rebounding is in the top 3 for the NBA for PG (one of the lesser jobs a PG has). All he has that leads the league is assists, and he holds the ball a ton, and doesn't shoot much, if wasn't 1-2 in assists, he'd be pathetic. Yes, and his inside 2PT shooting percentage is very good, but he doesn't take that many shots either, so the value of that high percent offense is negligible.

Could be a blessing in disguise. Rondo cant shoot and plays terrible defense. He is more concerned with padding his triple-double stats on big TV games than he is in winning basketball games. Get a better shooter/ teammate in at PG and the Celts could be dangerous come playoff time.

I feel like A LOT of Celtics fans have been clamoring about Rondo's overratedness for a while. Dude is one of my 3-4 favorite players to watch, but his impact on an offense is blown way out of proportion.

There seems to be a big split among Celtics fans in regards to Rondo that has existed for a while now. I'm sure him missing the rest of the season will just add fuel to that argument.

Like I said, I just don't think the offense is gonna drop off much at all. Listening to Corey and Bags, perhaps the defense won't either (we do all know that Bradley is a tremendous defender...Lee ain't no slouch either).
