View Full Version : Report: Cavs Are Saving Cap Space For Potential Run at LeBron James in 2014

Well, we’re sure fans in Cleveland will have zero opinions about this one. According to the Akron Beacon Journal, the Cavs are reluctant to use too much of their cap space these days, with the plan being to maintain enough money to potentially sign LeBron James to a max deal when he has the option to become a free agent in 2014: “Executives and agents around the league are convinced the Cavaliers won’t do anything to jeopardize their ability to sign a free agent to a max contract during the summer of 2014, when LeBron James can again become a free agent. As fans in Northeast Ohio continue to howl and remain divided about the possibility of his return, more and more people around the league believe there is a strong possibility James will indeed return to Cleveland after next season. The Cavs are well aware of this, too, and won’t take on a bad contract if it compromises their cap space in two years. That means any bad contract they would obtain in a potential trade would have to expire after next season. It doesn’t make a deal impossible, but it dramatically reduces the field — and it decreases the price the Cavs can command since their future obligations would be brief.”

I always considered this. He got his ring, now he could go back to his hometown and win a ring there, erasing how big a ***** he was for the decision and creating a unique NBA legacy. And obviously the Cavs have a ton more talent than when he left, Kyrie alone... and who knows who they get this draft.

Definitely sounds like a possibility to me, especially since come 2014/2015 and so on who knows what you will get from Wade. The Cavs adding Lebron could arguably be better than the Heat.

The main hang up I would imagine would be the ugly breakup between the organization and Lebron, but if both realized they were pretty classless about the whole thing - who knows. I for one would find it incredibly interesting to see happen.

Also an issue is Lebron would have to really sack up knowing if he did go back and didn't win one he would look like a fool, and he has been shown to have a tiny sack up to this point in his career, still think it would be worth it though, the benefits of pulling it off would be enormous.

I am pretty sure that Lebron will leave Miami that summer. But only because Wade will be going on 33. He will have already had one ring (maybe more) and will probably be looking for something more challenging and fresh at that point.

A return to Cleveland is possible (though he wont win there).
Or he could play for MJ in Charlotte and do what Jordan did with the Wizards when he played there (except do a better job)

I just can't see him going through the same process again, especially if Miami wins another title or two.

People talk about Wade not being elite in another year or so, but he can still be a top 20 player in this league. Same with Bosh. Also who says Wade can't take another pay cut? He did it once and he can certainly do it again.

Plus I don't see LeBron wanting that type of legacy ..

Amico (Jan 24, 2012) (http://www.foxsportsohio.com/01/24/12/Cleveland-return-in-LeBrons-future-/landing_cavaliers.html?blockID=652216)

There is talk that James is less-than-thrilled with certain aspects of the Heat organization. Sources in Miami say that while James still thoroughly enjoys playing alongside fellow stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, he doesn’t particularly care for the heavy-handed and disciplined style of team president Pat Riley.

James can opt out of his contract at the end of the 2013-14 season, and speculation is he will strongly consider it if Riley remains in his current role. And the team James would be eyeballing most in free agency, say those close to the situation, would be the Cavs.

+

Wojnarowski (Feb 17, 2012) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-wojnarowski_lebron_james_opt_out_cavaliers_gilbert _021712)

Free agency is forever on his mind, and James is determined to make his hometown want him as much as he wants it again.

James months ago had an emissary or two carry that message to the Cavaliers’ front office, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. His camp wanted the message delivered to owner Dan Gilbert

“He has started to lay the groundwork, and he’s waiting to see what Dan Gilbert’s reaction to it is,” one league source with direct knowledge told Yahoo! Sports.

+

Akron Beacon Journal (Jan 13, 2012) (http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2013/01/report-cavs-are-saving-cap-space-for-potential-run-at-lebron-james-in-2014/)

More and more people around the league believe there is a strong possibility James will indeed return to Cleveland after next season. The Cavs are well aware of this, too, and won’t take on a bad contract if it compromises their cap space in two years.

I really don't think it was. He was a 'FREE AGENT' ESPN wanted to film it. If it wasn't proposed it would of never been televised. He was with them for seven years that is a pretty long time considering the longevity of NBA careers. The fans were way more disrespectful. I mean burning his jersey it's not that serious. Yes The Decision wasn't a great choice, but I'm pretty sure harsh words would of been said even if it wasn't televised.

The Cavs already have a lot of cap space come this free agency. They are 22 million below the cap. Cassipi, Walton, Pargo and Gibson are off the books this year which sheds approx 13 million. They can sign a bunch of players this free agency and be playoff contenders.

I agree... Don't see him coming back to the Cavs. Apparently, the "rumor" was he would return if they were close to contention (or something like that). I love Kyrie, but they stink. LeBron in OKC, Chicago, NYC, or BK makes sense.

It's not that easy signing FA in Cleveland. They have to overpay, and the players have to agree. The last big FA they signed was Larry "Glass Joe" Hughes and we all know how that worked out.

Hugbees

Their roster has way more potential than Miami (-Lebron) at that point anyway. If he wants to win, Cleveland would be the better option if you had to choose between the two. He could decide that he wants to, once again, be revered in Ohio. Who knows?

A team with James and Irving would immediately catapult Cleveland to the top of the Eastern Conference, but there is one big stumbling block before James would consider signing with Cleveland. The Cavaliers need to compete for a playoff spot, and right now they are nowhere near accomplishing that. The Cavs are in full rebuild mode after James left for Miami, and at 6-23 are among the worst teams in the league.

It would be a great story if James did return to Cleveland, but it looks unlikely at the moment.

I get what you're saying boss & I couldn't care less about the validity of the story in itself. But with Gilbert responding the way he did after The Decision & vowing to win a championship before Bron. One would think he'd be dead set focused on building a contending squad without the services of Lbj. If for nothing else, to prove the cavs doesnt need Lebron to be respected.

However, hypothetically, lets say this story is true. What's happening now is exactly why he left to begin with. Why waste away years by going cheap just to be, at best, "Players" in signing the best player in free agency? Put the best players you can around your star player(Kyrie) now...eff waiting on 2014 sweepstakes. What if bron doesnt go back to the Cavs? You pissed away a couple of seasons & you STILL dont get Lebron.

Where are the Cavs going? Be realistic, Lebron has already won a championship, Gilbert was mocked for his reaction. No owner with a brain would alienate an entire state to try to take on an impossible battle. What other top-tier free agents would legitimately consider Cleveland? Building solely around Kyrie won't get you to the promise land, you still need an elite talent before you can consider them a contender. Again realistically, Lebron and his affiliation with Ohio would be their greatest chance, even if that in itself is still slim. But putting yourself in position to have an opportunity to do so is still the better venture. They have already been rebuilding, 2014 is right around the corner.

My first thought as well. I can't imagine he leaves Miami though. Not when they are at the start of a dynasty. Heat will win back to back this year and might 3-peat.

This coming from a fellow knick fan, won't even give us a chance.

If cleveland is really planning on going after Lebron
Start making the correct moves to obtain him.

Move any and all talent that wont be on the team in 2014 now.

Make the move to bring in DMC

Suck this entire season and get a top three pick

Season the rookies and young guys next season; while still maintaining a losing record and bring in another young stud

Get Lebron with Kyrie, DMC, Waiters, 2013 Pick, 2014 pick

LBJ is the greatest player of his generation, I dont see him going back to Cleveland. Only BK or Miami would make sense.

Since the pressure is off of him winning a title, I would like to dare him to challenge Jordan's legacy and sign with Chicago. Nike would sign him to an even lucrative offer if that happened. But again that's a pipedreamer's pipedream.

Why use the "quotations"? Many of these fans you are talking about are self admitting LeBron fans.

The HEAT fans are pretty easy to spot just from a few posts, whether they have been here before July 8th 2010 or not.

I respectfully disagree with this. I been a die hard knicks fan my whole life and i just started posting here less than 2 years ago.

lol i think everybody knew that the psycho of an owner that the Cavs have would take back Lebron at the drop of a hat no matter what was said in that letter he wrote. Cavs fans that were burning their jerseys will accept Lebron back with open arms. Cleveland's savior will return to regain the honor he once had and EVERY Cavs fan will take back ANYTHING they have ever said about Lebron

they arent in the start of a dynasty....the luxury tax for the Heat will get so ridiculous a year or two down the road that they will either have to all take pay cuts or just get rid of one of the big 3.

from a basketball perspective, youd think they would get rid of Wade, but he has been there his whole career and has helped bring them, at the very least, 2 championships. i think its completely realistic that Lebron decides to go elsewhere after a good run in Miami.

Lol The crazy thing is Lebron might go back or to the Lakers . Wade won't be at an elite level anymore and Bosh is up in the air .

After posting 7,000 times and living in forums all day, you would think a person had more common sense. Do you really believe that Pat Riley is going to allow Dwayne Wade to deteriorate and have LBJ leave town. When wade declines, he will either restructure his contract, retire, or leave town. Winning comes first for Riley. We would have another max contract to resign another elite player. Fool.

Troll somewhere else.

Using your logic, you've only been a fan since November 2010. Think before using such stupid logic, the date you join a sports forum has nothing to do with..... Well, anything.

HEAT are going to go after KD, ( Pat will get it done )... I really don't see the HEAT falling off anytime soon. When Wade gets old and losses like 4 steps, that will only make the HEAT franchise stronger ( Why You Ask ), because star players will see that we take care of are own.

This will insure that the HEAT organization will be a contender for years to come... In short, we are going to continue to get them all discounted.

Enjoy this rigged league NBA fans.

Good lord. His point was the exact opposite of what you interpreted it to be.

He said, "the HEAT fans are pretty easy to spot just from a few posts (i.e., you can tell who they are from the content of their posts) whether they have been here before July 8th 2010 or not."

Yet, you read that to mean, ""the HEAT fans are pretty easy to spot . . . [because] they have been here before July 8th 2010."

Prob not kd but I could see Kevin love. This is how I c it. Wade takes a payout he already said his current contract is his last max contract. Bosh will prob leave being offered a ridiculous amount from some other team so that leaves us with a lot of money. And lebron with klove would be magical. Throw in an aged wade and couple ring chasers like we got now. lebrons not leaving UNLESS its for cle from the backlash he received last time and I think it would be easier for pat Riley to put an enticing roster then Gilbert. I think his resume proves that.

Its a conspiracy, Lebron and Gilbert have had this planned for years. The Cavs trade him to get a stockpile of picks and he comes back in 4 years to dominate the nba with the best surrounding cast that hes ever had.

If this was a plan and it worked it would be brilliant. He would have a hell of a supporting cast in Cleveland for a few years with the solid young core they have.

I think it depends how the Heat do over the next two years though. If they don't win again he is as good as gone.

I don't think Lebron comes back...

The Cavs saving up space to make a run at a max player and the media says it's Lebron because of his love for Akron.

The Cavs are doing the right thing though. They should make a run at any max player available and if they don't get one, then try to get another star in the draft to go with Irving and use the cap on 2 or 3 good players.

Everyone is smh it's the reason the Nets will not make a run at Nene. They wanna have that space available

Watch Lebron pull the rug right from underneath Cleveland's feet again. They are just gonna get their hearts broken again.
