Big: Prime Ben Wallace.

Wing: Prime Pippen.

PG: Prime GP.

I guess the prime goes without saying. Ben Wallace used to be an absolute force of nature though, so fun to watch.

Pippen... guards anyone from 6' to 6'11 effectively... not to mention the help-side and passing lane D.

Rodman with Det... similar to Pippen at that time but more man-to-man, not as good playing the passing lanes and help-side.

Honorable mentions... Hakeem, GP, Deke, Artest @ Pacers, Jordan.

I'm trying to think of someone similar...
Maybe Tim Duncan or David Robinson in their primes if they was able to go out and defend wings on the arc good.

Just people who ive seen in person, but Lebron is the most unbelievable defender in person, and Alonzo Mournings shot blocking ability puts him up there as well. Just ridiculous ability to read the shooter and react.

This is the best list yet. Though I'm not entirely with you on the centers. D. Rob has to be there if Ewing's on it, and I'd rearrange a bit.

He was all bout Blocks BUT he wouldnt translate well to the modern game.

HE was to slow and got away with it back then cause refs allowed more phisical play.

Hakeem and Pippen

Hakeem: How many centers can switch on a ball screen and still shut down a point guard or elite perimeter player?

Pippen: Could guard all 5 positions. Him guarding your point guard 94 feet though was a nightmare. Shut down opposing team's offenses.

Top Defenders I have seen by position:

Point Guards: Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, Chauncey Billups/Mookie Blaylock
Shooting Guards: Michael Jordan, Sidney Moncrief, Kobe Bryant
Small Forwards: Scottie Pippen, Lebron James, Ron Artest
Power Forwards: Dennis Rodman, Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, Karl Malone
Centers: Hakeem Olajuwon, Dikembe Mutombo, David Robinson

Honorable Mention: Michael Cooper, Alvin Robertson, Alonzo Mourning, Dwight Howard, Patrick Ewing, Ben Wallace, Bruce Bowen

ben wallace, bruce bowen, ron artest.

i'm 25, so i'm a bit young to have actually witnessed pippen, hakeem, and payton at their defensive peaks with any analytical conscious. they were already in their 30's by the time i really started paying attention.

JasonJohnHorn

I think it depends on what you mean by defence. One-on-one coverage, team defence, guarding the passing lanes, post/help defence.

Jordan, Payton, Darrell Walker, Joe Dumar, Alvin Robertson, they were all great defenders in the back court.
For forwards Rodman and Artest are anomg the best, Bowen as well, and obviously Garnett and Ducan as well (Duncan is just amazing).
In the post; Mutumbo, Hakeem, Mourning, Ben Wallace.

The greatest Ive seen

C - Mutumbo
PF- Rodman
SF- Pippen
SG- Kobe - Jordan was a far better help defender, but I feel Kobe was a better on ball defender
PG - Dumars

I still believe if Hakeem wouldn't of tipped John Starks three point shot at the end of game 6 of the finals, the Knicks would have won the championship. Starks was unconscious that game, tremendous defensive play by Olajuwon.

Anyways Olajuwon, Pippen and the Glove for me.

Since I'm a relatively young pup, I've only been watching b-ball religiously since '99.

Best I've seen with my OWN eyes, David Robinson, Ben Wallace, Prime Ron Artest, Dikembe Mutumbo, Bowen, and Andre Iguodala.

Lebron, cause he never commits fouls

You know what they used to say back in the day was if you didn't commit any fouls you weren't playing tight enough defense, not saying he doesn't play good defense just brought back a memory.

Easily Easily a tie between LeBron and Hakeem. Nobody else really compares to those guys.

And you have to take into account 10-15 years ago it was much easier and accepted to be physical as a defender than it is today. If LeBron played in the 90's and early 00's he would be even more dominant defensively. And I've seen the Glove in his prime great defender but not on the level of Hakeem and LBJ. His reputation definitely preceded him.
