Derek Fisher is considering retirement, according to sources close to the situation.

Sources say that the 38-year-old Fisher has asked the Dallas Mavericks to release him from his contract, which he signed last month. An official announcement is expected soon.

After spending several weeks with the Mavericks, Fisher realized that he no longer wanted to live the NBA lifestyle. He didnít want to put further wear and tear on his body or spend more time away from his family. When he suffered an injury to his patellar tendon that would have sidelined him for several weeks, that was the final straw.

The five-time champion is satisfied with everything he has accomplished over the course of his 17-year career, according to sources. Fisher tweeted that he hasnít ruled out a return to the NBA, but sources say he is seriously contemplating retirement.

You will be sorely missed D-Fish!

This is for you baby!: :win: :win: :win: :win: :win:

Being a lakers fan, I never liked him much as a player(production wise) but as a team leader and class act you couldn't ask for a better guy then fish. Congrats on a successful career #2!

I never liked the guy.

Me neither. He seemed like a nice locker room guy but was nothing more than a glorified role player on the court.

Still slightly peeved we traded Hill for him, just so he could whine his way out of town and join the Thunder. But I digress. I will always remember him hitting that shot against the Spurs, and crying on the bench when the Lakers failed to win 4 in a row. Dude cared, and loved to win. Solid career.

I know that basketball is a team sport but they got 5x champion like he was a somebody on the Lakers. A ring is a ring but its more valuable if you was the man on that championship team.

He was the starting PG on 4 of 5 Lakers championship runs. He had a NBA record for best 3pt FG% in a Playoff series (15/20 3's 75%) when the Lakers swept the Spurs in the 01 WCF. His countless clutch moments in the playoffs etc. He did A LOT for the Lakers.

IMO, he's probably a Top 5 Championship Role Player In NBA history.

You obviously didnt watch him play. He was one of the most clutch performers in the playoffs

Finally. 2 years overdue but it's finally done. Great role player for all these years for the Lakers.

Now I want him back on the Lakers organization and become the head coach of the Lakers. Or the very least assistant coach, THEN become head coach when the Lakers get sick of Dantoni.

He'll be a good coach someday. It would make sense for him to join the Lakers staff.

Top 5 or bottom 5, he still a Role player. When he was young, he didn't say "I wanna get drafted and be a top 5 role player"

If he didn't get drafted by Lakers, he probably would of retired 10 years ago.

He should have retired last season after making it to another NBA finals. He probi leads the league in finals appearances amongst active players

Yup, 8 to be precise, with a 5-3 record.

2000 W vs IND
2001 W vs PHI
2002 W vs NJ
2004 L vs DET
2008 L vs BOS
2009 W vs ORL
2010 W vs BOS
2012 L vs MIA

So he didn't get them teams there. If none of those teams was contenders he would of just made up an excuse to leave, ask to be release, not show up after being traded, or retire.

Depends on how broad your definition of "role player" is.

Fisher's not a role player, he bailed Kobe out time after time?
