View Full Version : Dwight Howard ejected after purposely elbowing Faried in his face

Fresno

Dwight Howard ejected for flagrant two, foul to the face of Kenneth Faried. Bad foul, Howard went to the face. And at least a fine coming.
http://twitter.com/basketballtalk/status/284142634962911233

Dwight was getting embarrassed by the 'Manimal' on the boards and fouled him to get out of the game.

Dwight gets ejected for a mush (clear flagrant 1)/likely overreaction from Farried to sell it, yet Wade gets nothing yet for a clear flagrant 2 to the nuts of Sessions that occurred right in front of a ref. Pretty funny. To stay on topic though BOTH were unnecessary, yet to eject Dwight was uncalled for IMO.

yeah i would go as for as flagrant 1 but a ejection is just a awful call. If you watched the game the game was called one sided and Howard had enough and was def sending a message but it didn't help his team at all, he is there defensive anchor could have used him even though with how the Nuggets shot tonight and the officials it wouldn't have mattered much.

The NBA flagrant foul rule was enacted in the 1990s as an attempt to deter contact which, in addition to being against the rules, puts an opponent's safety and health at risk

Maybe you should take a good, long look at how Faried landed after that shot to the face, and Jordan Hill's reaction to that landing.

People defend like that all the time, look at Battier. he goes straight to the face with his hands all the time and constantly will hit their forehead. Should that also be a ejection? howard arms were both up but def leaning forward but he didnt push it down into him faried ran into it and def sold it for 5 min on ground. Flagrant 1.................maybe...............ejection.... .....sissy league.

Wish the league went back to the 80's - 90's game play

Nah... I'm not sold. Howard for years has proven he's quite an actor. Sure, Faried ran into a Mack truck, but that was completely avoidable for Howard. If you watched the Suns/Knicks game, there was a prime example of an accidental foul when Smith deliberately left his arms down and his head leaned out of the way to try avoiding clipping Goran Dragic tonight, but he still got clipped, landed terribly on this side/back, and was out the remainder of the game. Smith at least TRIED to avoid it, Howard didn't.

Howard should be suspended for the remainder of the year.

This reply is simply ridiculous. He was up against a pesky attacker and he wanted to put the guy in his place - it was a bit extreme, and there'll probably be a fine in there, and maybe a game suspension, but anything more than that would be pretty excessive.

You'd think he'd elbow the FT line in the face for embarrassing him on a nightly basis.

Is Faried smiling even more often than Howard? Those two would be fun together on the same team.

Stupid play by Dwight, I think he cost us tonight. Close game until he left and he wasn't even playing well. He was definitely frustrated though. I've seen it with Shaq before, he laid down a flagrant every now and then when they felt like he wasn't getting calls to go his way. It doesn't justify what Dwight did, but without question nobody gets fouled harder and more often without getting calls than Dwight Howard.

Again, it was still a dirty play, but a lot of us in the Laker forum thought that he has been getting hammered a lot lately without getting a whistle. Pure frustration foul. Faried was out working him too, and I do think it was for that reason that he directed it at Faried.

I'm not a Kings fan  I'm not bitter since I don't hate on the Lakers either. I'm envious of them if anything.

Don't speculate.

I got your back.

Dude said, 'I'm not a hater I'm just jealous.'

What's funny about that? You'd be lying if you were a fan and weren't envious of their history and winning tradition.

Damn refs. Call the exact same number of fouls, exact same number of 3 second violations, 1 tech to McGee, the flagrant to Dwight, and gave the Nuggets two more free throws than the Lakers. Conspiracy.

Easy - Smith TRIED to get out of the way, his arms were down, his head was leaned away from Goran's legs when he realized he was about to collide into them. It was a nasty fall, but it could have been a LOT worse if the hands were up and he turned into him rather than away from him. They were both going at full speed and Goran just got caught out blindsided a bit.

Smith wanted to look like he was getting out of the way but still nudge him enough to help him miss the shot or atleast send him flying. It was a crafty-dirty play.. Bruce Bowen would be proud.

Not sure if that's flagrant 2 worthy.....flagrant 1 would've been a better call to me.

Probably shouldn't have been an ejection, but definitely a flagrant.

He made zero attempt to go at the ball, and every attempt to go at the face. That's the definition of flagrant. His history with frustration-induced cheap shots probably doesn't help. He's prone to this ********.

I only saw it out of the corner of my eye and screamed "FLOP!" Then I saw the replay and was like "Yeah...cheap shot"

The definition of a flagrant 2:

b. If contact committed against a player, with or without the ball, is interpret-ed to be unnecessary and excessive, a flagrant foul--penalty (2) will be assessed. A personal foul is charged to the offender and a team foul is charged to the team.
PENALTY: (1) Two free throws shall be attempted and the ball awarded to the offended team on either side of the court at the free throw line extended. (2) If the offended player is injured and unable to attempt his free throws, his coach will select a substitute and any player from the team is eligible to attempt the free throws. (3) This substitute may not be replaced until the ball is legally touched by a player on the court. EXCEPTION: Rule 3--Section V--e. (4) The injured player may return to the game at any time after the free throws are attempted. (5) This is an unsports-manlike act and the offender is ejected.

All it has to be is unnecessary and excessive. I'll say it was both. Just because it wasn't a vicious elbow or something that could have seriously hurt a guy doesn't mean it's not a flagrant 2. It was 100% unnecessary, it was 100% excessive and it was clearly intentional. I guess I don't have a gripe with the ejection.

Wasn't an elbow but still a pretty punk move by Dwight. But he's been doing this for years and is nothing new. Because he's a nice guy and a goofball people seem to give him a pass. Remember elbowing Dalembert? As a Magic fan over the years, there's another 10 incidents just like that.

That's what happens when you keep driving the lane bringing your knee up you get smacked in the mouth. Nothing to see here one dirty play deserves another.

I love that they changed that rule this year about all flagrant fouls can be reviewed and upgraded or downgraded.

Probably not a Flagrant 2 (according to the rules I can see how it could be), but still a dumb move out of frustration. Don't see a flop by Faried at all. The fact that some Lakers fans are saying he deserved it since he's dirty himself = homerism on the highest level.

Well, sadly, that's Lakers fans for ya...or really any fan base filled with a high volume of fans.

They'll start realizing that when Dwight gets frustrated he sometimes backlashes and thus hurts his team. They'll stop defending it in due time...just like every Magic fan did during Dwight's waning years. He has a poor grasp on his frustration. I always said that no player takes more hard fouls with nothing to show for it that Dwight (partially because he NEVER flops, and is so strong)...but he's gotta learn to deal with it better. He acts out too much. He'll be in the league lead either by himself or tied after this one, depending if they reduce it to a 1.
