1. Kobe Bryant- Arguably the most skilled player to ever play, even PJ said he is more skilled than MJ.
2. Larry Bird- No athleticism and still a beast. One of the greatest shooters of all time.
3. Tim Duncan- The big Fundamental himself
4. Hakeem- Could do EVERYTHING!!!
5. Nash- Never the quickest but still Top 5 passer/shooter of all time.

These are just 5 that came to mind, I'm sure I'm missing a few big names.

All NBA basketball players are athletic at some level.

You could probably throw in all of the NBA vets that have been around since the early to mid 90's that are STILL in this league....The game is SO much faster nowadays that you'd have to be very fundamentally sound for teams to still have faith in you especially when youre athletic ability is worn down and youre no where near as fast as you used to be.... I mean, Im pretty sure there are many young, athletic 20 year olds out there that are more durable than the Rasheed Wallaces of the league and yet they just dont have the IQ to last a season yet alone 15+

That's not what the thread is about. The question is if athleticism was universally removed, which players would shine due to their skills and fundamentals? Obviously Jordan was athletic, pretty much every decent player is athletic in some capacity. But Jordan would be great even if his athleticism was taken away.

Good question for a change.

All time (no particular order):
Magic Johnson
Larry Bird
Oscar Robertson
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Jerry West

Also: Chris Mullin, Bill Walton, Hakeem Olajuwon (athletic but strong in fundamentals), John Stockton

Right now (no particular order):
Kobe Bryant
Kevin Durant
Kevin Love
Carmelo Anthony
Pau Gasol (I attribute his slow start this season to injury.)

Also: Jason Kidd, Marc Gasol, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan

I don't believe those skills require athleticism. To me, athleticism is leaping ability and speed. Some people put an over-emphasis on these attributes when evaluating players, as if this were track 'n' field. Basically, the gifts that would translate directly to track 'n' field would be what I define as pure athletics.

While the above two players played a good running game, they weren't exactly fast. Actually, I kind of remember Stockton being pretty quick in his early years, but I don't think much of his game relied on speed. I don't think Nash was ever especially fast at all. Now CP3, on the other hand...

There would also be a larger talent pool. Baseball has like 17 rounds in a draft because it is more about mechanics. If basketball was like that you'd see those only two rounds not be adequate.

Great list...have to have Magic at number one though. As a rookie he led the Lakers to a championship playing center in a clutch game of the finals. Magic was a player that could truly play every position. Magic had the best basket ball IQ of any player in the history of the NBA.

Ding. Thanks for putting him in check there. Jordan's a guy who put up 50 points in a game at 40 years old, after his 2nd retirement. His game was not about athleticism as his career progressed, it's just what put the shimmer on it. He was the best all around 2 guard to play the game from a fundamental/IQ/grit standpoint by a fairly wide margin imo.

Other than my Cp3, Jordan, Paul Pierce, Duncan, Olajuwon list I'll submit:

PG: Stockton
SG: Jerry West
SF: Rick Barry
PF: Kevin McHale
C: Bill Walton

I only had swings in mind. Bigs are in a category all their own, but I said Tmac because he would definitely be in that category.

The question asks, if everyone was on an equal footing athletically, ignoring body mass/type because you obviously cant change that, but if we were to make everyone equally slow/fast, with equal leaps and what not, then those physical traits become something of an advantage. IE Tmac is still 6"8 with length and handles/vision, and if he can shoot over the top of you again its game over.

I'm not trolling you dude i just don't think that tmac was the right fit for the question man.

My complaint was that you didnt present any reasoning WHY.

Ok i can somewhat agree with this. I get what your trying to say. Tmac was athletic as hell though and when that gave out due to injury his game kind of fell apart.

Thats because there is only so much age and injuries a body can take. With the balky bad and creaky knees, your asking for alot more from someone who managed to make as many All-NBA teams as he did.
