View Full Version : Carmelo Anthony a top 5 player?

Evolution23
12-20-2012, 06:58 PM
It's still only 1/4th of the way through the season but Carmelo Anthony imo is playing out of his mind and has finally claimed that top 5 spot. He is scoring at an unbelievable level and his defense looks much improved. He is also hustling, diving, and getting those floor burns. Basicly if I had to put him in the top 5 players list I would have it like this...

1. Lebron
2. Durant
3. Cp3
4. Melo
5. Westbrook (There isn't a definitive 5th guy)

If Ryan Tannehill was the starting PG for the Knicks over the last 30 years, they would have won the same amount of championships. I know he wasn't alive for some of those 30 years, but the result would be the same.

Should that be a surprise to people. Melo is in his prime and Kobe is in his 17th year and is 34. It took Melo until his 10th year to be better. Good job! I think. Lebron did it in like 2 or 3 years of comining into the NBA.

if Kobe Bryant keeps on shooting 30 shots a game, the lakers won't even make the playoffs. If Dwight Howard smiles after missing 10+ freethrows a game the rest of the league will keep on making fun of them.

That is great. Kobe did his damage, Lebron is doing his, Durant is about to do his. Melo has an outside shot to get a ring, but I think he goes down as a Malone and Barkley type to never win one because he wasn't better than the players in his era. Looks like you guys are having a fun season, talk to me when it is over. You know, when the Knicks fall short again.

I feel like Kobe needs 1 more superstar player to get a shot at a ring. He has the best center in the NBA, and top 5 pg, and a top 5 power forward. But if Kobe had Durant and Westbrook along with Phil Jackson he would finally get his 6th ring. But if that all doesn't work out he can blame it on the Pau Gasol or Mike D'antoni.

Thus far this season? Yeah I can't put 5 guys ahead of Melo he's been exceptional on both sides of the ball for his standards. Rose is out, Dirk is out, Howard is underperforming, Wade as well (well he's starting to come around once more) and Love is just getting back into the groove after a serious injury on his shooting hand so we gotta wait until the end of the season to really gauge Melo's worth but based on play this season he's absolutely a top 5 player IMO.

I have been making this point for years now in the Knicks forum and all they do is call me a fake fan for it. It got to the point last off-season where I couldn't take it and started rooting for the Nets also since they moved to New York. Now they won't shut up about that, saying I was a fake Knicks fan all along when I spent years posting there and there only.

They don't understand it and they get VERY, VERY angry at you if you don't fall into line with everything they say about how Melo is the best player in the league supposedly...

The hero worship is above and beyond that which happens in every other sport... they are madly in love with this guy.

I do not even know if Melo was a top 15 player last season but in the first 20 or so games I could seem him being anywhere from top 3 to top 6.

Lebron-Durant-Kobe-Duncan-Paul-Melo have to be around the top 6 so far this season. I expect Love may make his way in that mix if he gets back to 100% soon.

I've never seen players get more hate than Melo and Kobe in these boards while guys like LeBron and Durant can do no wrong. People who say "LeBron is the best in the league and it's not even close" are just ignorant. Him and Durant are both ridiculously good but it's like people refuse to give any credit to Melo or Kobe, and they will overrate CP3 and put him ahead of them. You guys just need to accept that Kobe is having arguably his best season yet, and most efficient. Melo is flat out unguardable right now and has the best offensive arsenal in the league right now. Top 5 right now: LeBron, Durant, Melo, Kobe, and I guess CP3 but I think he's a tad overrated. Harden is rapidly becoming a stud though and is >>>>Westbrook.

lol yeah I know what you meant, I agree 100 % Ive followed Melo since his cuse days and even his stretches when he played great for 20+ Games I have never seen the look in Melo's eye as corny as that sounds. The D and willingness to pass out of the doubles is different. I think this is finally the year where he takes the step he needs to take to compete for a championship. Imo it was the olympic coaching and james winning a ring. Melo knows he is better than james.

He lacks basketball knowledge, this is expected from him

I've always believed that Melo has had the talent within him to be one of the greats. It just seems to me like this year he's matured and has that desire to play up to his potential. He's definitely hitting his prime.

I said he is soft. Yes. I bet you most non-Knicks fans would agree with me on that. This year he has stepped up his game somewhat, but I'm not just going to ignore the rest of his career.

This thread is ludicrous. How can you be top 5 in the league when there's only 1 aspect to your game? He's a 1 dimensional player. Show me some defense and then we'll talk.

I know, right? Talk about overrated. People are just obsessed with this idiot.

I have definitely said that Melo sucks (compared to people's estimation of him).

I want it on the record that I have never said those 2 other things you mention in your post.

Old enough to vote. Let's just leave it at that.
Ahh, to be a Knicks fan.
We have a Troll Mod.
We have ignorant Trolls like Stoic
And we even have under cover Trolls like this guy

lol what a joke

Yeah nobody has forgotten about your melo nonsense in the NBA forums (while sporting an Andy Rautins sig:facepalm:).

What a great time to be a fan.

I think Melo is top 5-8, no problem. Just don't be telling me Pau Gasol and Zach Randolph ae better than him ESpn!!!!

Anywho...

1. Lebron
2. KD
3. Chris Paul
4. Dwight Howard
5. Carmelo Anthony

I'm as hard on Dwight and Carmelo as anyone, but both are really talented, however when Rose comes back one of them will get dropped off my list. I'm not going to base that decision because of 30 games though.

I agree with the list except for Dwight Howard. No way DH is a top 5 player this year so far. He's been under-performing in all areas of his game. Ask Laker fans, they will tell you. I understand he's injured but at this point he's not a top5 player.

Not a Knick fan by any stretch, but Melo is definitely top 5 in the league right now...as far as scoring the ball? he's top 3 (Durant, Kobe, Melo, in any order) he's definitely making a case for MVP at the moment as his team is doing just as good as any of the top teams in the NBA.

bringbackfredex

Definitely not top 3, but somewhere in the 4-10 range depending on if he carries his play from this year into the future.

all im seeing is that his presence alone makes everyone better by not playing as much ISO ball. he is not particularly making his team-mates better in a physical sense. He's shooting and scoring at a phenomenal rate but still shooting < 50%. he takes 20 shots a game where he could have easily passed it to someone else to make those shots. He is averaging career lows in assists as Woodson has made him strictly a scorer and not a facilitator. Woodson watched how Melo became better by not letting Melo hold the ball. like the Olympics.

I think Melo's success is due to in part of Woodson. too much credit to Melo when Woodson is taking away Melo's "ability" to facilitate the offence.

Without a doubt he's top 5. Anybody saying he's not is definitely hating. He's In that elite level with Bron and Durant. He is a better scorer than Lebron for sure and can do more in the post than Kd. I think soon hell be ranked above both of them. Melo plays like a 6 ft 8 Jordan mixed with Barkley

You know whats scary? Melo is turning into one of the best 3pt shooters in the entire league.

Not such a small sample size either, since coming to NY he's taken over 500 3's, and hit on about 40% of them, and that's including last year when he was hurt most of the year and couldn't hit anything from 2 or 3. This year almost 6 attempts per game and 46%...

I gotta give D'antoni props for that, he opened up that part of Melo's game.

Beltrans Mole

He's arguably the very best "pure scorer" in the NBA right now. Add the fact that he's playing the best defense of his career and is looking for teammates more often, how can he not be considered a Top 5 player? He's an MVP candidate...

And no, I do not think Melo is better than Lebron or Durant, but he's really not far below those guys.

there is no fact to this.

I've watched 99% of Melo's games as a Knick this year and last year. I've also watched a lot of his Denver games. If you are going to dispute that Melo has bought into Woodson's scheme you are nuts. Watch the games.

simple: isn't noticing defence from a player an opinion? last time i checked, an opinion isn't fact.

okay fine, he's playing better defense...compared to last year. but thats about it. his advanced stats don't give him the vindication that he's playing better defense. his offense is through the roof though and thats a good reason why his team is winning. there is certainly more effort from his this year defensively but is it consistent? stats say otherwise.

This is what always happens with Melo. When he is playing on Lebron's level he ends up doing something that messes him up. It was the one year he had that 15 game suspension and that really ruined him. Now tonight he gets ejected.
