View Full Version : Should Clips abide to the Staples Standard?

Chronz

If you walk into Staples you notice alot of Championship banners and a complete lack of division titles. That is the standard the Lakers have set, but if the Clips happen to win their division for the first time in franchise history, shouldnt they celebrate it?

Its a non issue to me, I personally wouldn't try to emulate any franchise but thats just me.

I always wondered that about the Clippers/Lakers. I mean, when the Clippers are playing, do they take down the Lakers banners? Or do the Clippers just play in the shadow of shame?

And should Minny put up banners for the championships that the Lakers won in Minny? I mean, they were won by a Minny team.

I say thrown the division banner up. It is something to be proud of. I mean, there are franchises who have never won a single NBA title, let alone 17, so not everybody can be expected to hold the same standard as Boston and LAL. Teams should celebrate their accomplishments and milestones, and that would be a milestone for the Clippers franchise.

Honestly I think they should move locations. Maybe go down to San Diego.

Aren't the banners removed when other entertainment is held in the arena? Concerts, etc?

No the banners stay up, only the decor changes, I wondered the same thing until I traveled there last march to watch a few games. The lighting is very dif for both teams with the clippers having the really bright lights and Lakers having the dimmed lights for the audience. I didnt think it was a big deal until I went to a few games. I honestly prefer the dimmed lights, it adds a certain something to the game. Looking forward to seeing 4 more games in on my next trip to LA in a lil over two weeks!

I'd think the Lakers would throw everything up there. Let the fans see the greatness. Title banners are nice but they don't tell the whole story.

As for the Clippers, they absolutely should do the same. Put it up. It would be the biggest accomplishment in the franchises history for (now).

... yes ... clippers should have a huge division banner to block all the lakers championship banners LOL jk seriously though they need to put it up ... a standard only applies to teams that want to participate I think ... i mean if it didn't all the teams would have retired Micheal jordans number

Clippers really should be playing in San Diego. San Diego is a huge naval base and Clippers = Boats and it helps them develop fan base. it's really a win win. And they already played there in the past from 1978-84. Just a matter of if they can get a new arena that seats more people than their original Valley View Casino Center. Only seats 14,000

That's not the Staples Standard, it's the Lakers standard.

The Clippers should most definitely put up any division titles they win. If and when they win over 10 championships, maybe they should consider following how the Lakers do it.

Nah bro, when your a team in LA there is no shame.

They already have a following, a sweeter deal and a better market. Why would a team upgrade only to go back to the original dump?

If its the STAPLES center, you can't put anything up except championship banners. You can't have Laker Championship Banners everywhere and then have 1 Clippers division title. Its makes them look more of a joke in the Lakers-Clippers rivalry.

They were won by a Minny team but the Wolves have zero ties to the Lakers aside from the state. That's like the Jets hanging Giants banners. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I think the Clippers should blaze their own trail in regard to the topic. No shame in winning this division and hanging a banner.

This is a fair statement. I just don't agree with this being a rivalry. Its more of a big brother shooting 21 with his little brother in the park kind of competition.

Lmao not this year. And itll probably stay this way for a few years if the Lakers continue to struggle when nash and pau reaturn, the Dwight will leave due to a lack of success and D'antoni, and kobe will retire the following year. Meanwhile the Clips are ready to roll for the next few year even if CP3 met up with Dwight elsewhere.

I agree it would look dumb. The Clippers have to follow the Lakers standard. All the teams that play at Staples have their banners on one wall, so the Clips banner would be basically right next to the Lakers banners.

This isnt the staples center standard though because the the LA Kings have a conference championship banner up on the wall from when Gretzky was here.

Well the LA Kings have a division banner in Staples and since there still is quite a bit of room left in the rafters, I think the Clips will raise a division champions banner if they win one

Going along with your analogy (fair one btw), it would be similar to the little brother getting a "participation award" and then having it put into the award/trophy cabinet next to all of the big brother's 1st place trophies. Thats the Clippers-Lakers in a nut shell.

It's not the Staples Standard, it is what the Lakers do. The only reason the Clippers don't have the division title banners up is because they haven't won any. Im sure they would hang the division title banner, just to hang something in Staples, even though it might look out of place.

Why would it be a joke to hang a divison title if they win one? If they try to hold themselves to the Lakers standards they are always going to be a joke, unless they somehow get 15 or so titles in the future.

The Clippers should be the Clippers. There's no shame in division titles, especially when the Lakers are in that same division. If anything hanging that banner will show that the Clippers had gotten the better of the Lakers, and that they aren't a doormat anymore.

If they win it they should hang it with pride. The Lakers didn't start with all of those titles as a franchise, you gotta start somewhere.

They should put it up so I can take a picture. So when all the Clipper fans (who haven't won anything by the way) starts talking that LA is a Clipper town now, I can just show them the Lakers championship bannerS next to their single division champs banner.

BTW, as I've said before, the Lakers division champs banners are located in the bathroom by the urinals in case of splashing.

Sterling being Sterling means being financially driven and a racial bigot. But hes spending money and hes not as involved with decision making. Thats a big improvement from the past regime. Regardless, neither version would be dumb enough to move back. Got it too sweet here.

I forget, who's the new GM again of the Clippers?

And also, who you listen to more? Mason&Ireland or Max&Marcellus? You know Marcellus gives MAD love to the Clips on 710. Max well, he's the total opposite. :laugh2:

I can throw this basketball over those banners! LOL!!

If and when the Clippers raise a banner it will be one more than the Lakers have that year and moving forward. All the comments about banners and rings are going to be music to my years!! Even if the Clippers just win a division, I spent 18 years watching a dog **** team to prove my worth as an NBA fan. You will only be signing my praises when speaking of all the banners!
