Nice move. Going to be stiffer competition for a First Baseman with the Red Sox needing one as well.

Loney isn't going to be very productive unless he can change and be able to hit LH pitching.
2012- 92 AB - .217/ .247/ .261/ .508
2011- 127 AB - .213/ .254/ .307/ .561
2010- 176 AB - .222/ .262/ .313/ .575

more of a platoon player now.

Since it's the Rays this is genius, but overall meh.

It's almost certainly got to be a 1 year deal.

Should have brought back Pena. At least he hits HR to go along with his .200 ba.

Most likely, he won't face lefties.

They will likely sign a platoon partner to play next to him

I can see .280/.340/.425 for the season, facing basically only righties, and then find a compliment to face lefties

If Yanks do not sign Chavez, I can see him being their platoon lefty at 1B. But I think Chavy like NY...not sure if Yanks want to go that direction again though.

I would like to see Rays add more offense. Shields, Price, Hellickson, Moore is a great 1-4.

Think Archer will win the 5th spot if he shows improved control in spring training. He's a TORP-in-the-making.

Nope, solid, if not very good #5. Niemann, Davis are others. Rays really need to start trading...

Not sure how one of the weakest hitting first basemen in the league is going to suddenly flip the switch at his age. I've never been able to figure out (and obviously he and his coaches are on the same boat) how someone so big with such a pretty swing has so much trouble generating power. A shorter approach may do that slow bat some good.

Jeffy25
12-03-2012, 02:27 AM
I can see James Shields being traded for Mike Morse and Danny Espinoza

Rays
C - Molina (somebody)
1B - Loney/Morse platoon
2B - Zobrist
3B - Longoria
SS - Espinoza
LF - Morse most of the time, and occasional back up starts for an additional right handed bat whenever Morse needs to play first
CF - Jennings
RF - Joyce/Zobrist platoon
DH - Last platoon partner

Rotation
1. Price
2. Helly
3. Moore
4. Cobb
5. Niemann/Archer/Ramos (and maybe Davis, but I doubt that)

Nationals

C - Flores/Suzuki
1B - ?
2B - Lombardozzi
3B - Zimmerman
SS - Desmond
LF - Bernadina/?
CF - Harper
RF - Werth

Rotation
1. Strasburg
2. Gio
3. Shields
4. Zimmerman
5. Detwiller (I'm guessing)

Don't know if this makes perfect sense for the Nationals, but it does for the Rays. Those are two of the kinds of guys they would look to add for Shields (maybe a prospect)

LF - Werth
CF - Span
RF - Harper

...Chavy doesn't make sense as a platoon partner with Loney. They're both lefties.

He would look good, however, as the Jays back up3B/1B/DH :D

James Loney! The rays are clearly in a win now mode, with him at first i am surprised they would even consider trading price, you can practically smell championship coming.

12-03-2012, 05:03 AM
Slow bat, long swing. We'll see if Maddon&Co can turn him into something useful.

Speaking of a platoon partner, you think the Rays sign Juan Rivera as the right-handed complement? Or Mark Reynolds?

Halladay
12-03-2012, 05:46 AM
Not really a big signing, we all know the Rays are a team based on pitching. The offense doesn't mean much tbh. They wanna win games 4-3...and they'll be a contender in the AL East. Too much pitching.

MetsFanatic19
12-03-2012, 07:08 AM
Hm, could end up being a very good signing for Tampa Bay. Loney is a solid baseball player.

Twitchy
12-03-2012, 08:36 AM
The only logical explanation I can come up with is this:

Loney's career in Tropicana Field: 417/481/708 (24 at bats).

Clearly the few times the Rays saw him, he hit like an MVP candidate. No wonder they signed him. They probably didn't bother scouting him for the rest of his at bats.

That's all I got, because there is never a good reason to sign James Loney.

1 year/2 million is a solid deal

his value, per fangraphs (in millions):

06: 3.8
07: 8.2
08: 2.1
09: 7.3
10: 5.4
11: 10.6
12: -0.4

as long as he is platooning

the dodgers tried this, it made us drop 200+mill to acquire Adrian.

i wouldn't suggest this route for tampa.

It's a bet. After his first two years, he's been dropping like a stone.

He could have won the BRS job, and what did he do? Just made sure the AL East has the right book on the him. Good glove however.

I don't think he ever has an OPS of over .750 in a full season again. Hell, .680 might be it.

They acquired Yunel Escobar to upgrade at SS and have had success in the past with moves like this. If you don't have anything positive to say, then don't say it at all.

Yunel actually has some legitimate value, though.
