Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Rosenthal tweeted the Cubs reached an agreement with him yaaaaaaaaay.

The team's bullpen was horrible last year. Yaaaaaaaay the FO actually made an aggressive move and beat out a competitor for a talent of significance yaaaaaaaay.

Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: #Cubs in agreement with Japanese closer Kyuji Fujikawa. Rival executives involved in bidding had expected him to go to #Angels.

Always good to be reminded of why I will enjoy disliking and eventually looking down on the Dodgers.

Deal:

Fujikawa deal with #Cubs: $1M signing bonus, $4M salaries in 2013 and '14, plus vesting option at $5.5M or $6M based on games finished.

If Fujikawa option does not vest, #Cubs hold $5.5M club option with $500K buyout. A total of $9.5M guaranteed.

Not bad at all.

We don't know about the guy, but seems like a solid deal.

Keith Law scouting report - had him at #30 on his top 50 FAs list:

The closer for the Hanshin Tigers is a true free agent now at age 32 after a successful 12-year NPB career that saw him strike out one out of every three batters he faced.

He's not as dominant as he used to be and pitches with a solid-average fastball and a good splitter that is occasionally plus, showing more of a steady drop than the abrupt tumble of a really good splitter. He also missed some time in 2012 with an adductor strain, and hasn't thrown 70 innings in a season since 2007.

He has potential as a setup man but I don't think he's an elite reliever unless that splitter gets sharper or more consistent.

I think the cubs got him because the angels couldn't guarantee him the closer job, but the cubs can.

Seems like a low risk/high reward kinda deal. Love it. KRod or Mike Adams next, please.

Seems like a good signing. Rather the Cubs than the Angels.

I think this guy is going to be dominant. Good contract too. Great signing for the Cubs!

What's the point of going to a non contendting team?

lol, oh come on.

Terrible, condescending thought process.

Likely non-contending in 2013, doesn't mean that the Cubs won't be contending in 2014 and 2015, both of which are years Fujikawa would be employed by the Cubs (2015 in the case his contract vests).

To use a favorite of Cubs fans who have already decided 2013 is done - now we've wasted a year of that guy's production and he'll only be older in 2014 and 2015.

This is the kind of move that gets done when you plan to not be embarrassing, which with some luck (Garza stays healthy, Castro is better than a .275 hitter, Rizzo keeps it up, DeJesus' mediocre power bounces back from no power, Barney's BABIP bumps back up and he keeps his HR gains at 27, Samardzija is as good as he looked for the majority of the year). It's only move #4 of the offseason so far, which btw is more than pretty much any other team out there.

He also has a good chance to close.

So who are they going to try to fob off Mr. Control Marmol and his career 6 BB/9 IP onto?
