Great move for the Nationals. Meyer is a work in progress, while Span is a solid CF with some speed and a decent glove

Ugh, I don't want the Phillies to sign Bourn. :sigh:

Don't worry we'll get him. 7/120 to be the 3rd base coach.

I don't know how i feel about this so i will withhold judgement until later on.

Pretty fair deal both ways. Gives the Nationals a legit CFer that they've been looking for, and they had a young starter to deal. Meyer probably a ways off, but looks like a good bet for the Twins based on his stats.

Don't know the prospect but I like the pickup. Better than overpaying for Bourn or pagan

Nice move by the Nationals to avoid having to pay for Bourn. Clever move to avoid FA prices...Respeck on that one.

Meyer is a good pickup for the Twins, who have the time to help him work out his edges.

Consolation prize for not getting BJ

My consolation prizes for not getting BJ's are usually way worse than this.

Good trade for the Nationals. It's only a matter of time until Alex Meyer starts being bad. Guys that tall (6'9) (lol) simply don't pan out a ridiculous majority of the time.

I like it as a Nats fan. Meyer isn't a guaranteed front line guy anyway. Trade from your depth to fill a weakness. Span is a lefty and will leadoff, balancing our lineup and moves Bryce to a corner spot. Well done Rizzo not getting into those expensive outfielders and getting a guy under control for two more years for a prospect not ready for 2-3 years anyway. Well done Rizzo, well done. Shapes the rest of the Nats offseason as well. Either they move on from LaRoche, move Morse to first and get another pitcher and bullpen help or trade Morse and re-sign LaRoche.

It's also prefect as his contract and skill-set are the perfect match. Win-now move and doesn't block any of the Nats up and coming guys like Brian Goodwin.

I like it for the nats, really hate them giving up Meyer, but he could end up just being a really good reliever. Span has 3 years of team control if they want

I wonder how they will do their lineup

Span
Werth
Zimmerman
Harper
Morse
Desmond
Ramos
Espinosa
Pitcher

Is probably what I would go with. In the NL Espinosa in the 8 hole is a damn good lineup

Coming from a Twins fan, I really have mixed feelings about this trade. I was really hopeful we would get a more MLB ready prospect for Span. He is going to be a great player for you guys in Washington.

Trading for high ceiling players in the low minors is pretty risky business. From what I read about Meyer it sounds like the sky is the limit and if everything fully develops he could be the next Verlander, but at the same time he could also be a mid level reliever. Does that sound about right?

At worse he'll be a very good reliever in my opinion. His top potential right now I'd say if he can develop some more control would be a #2 starter. Always the problem of repeating that delivery as a tall guy though. He has 2 really good plus pitches in his fastball and slider + a meh changeup. You guys didn't get shafted in the lightest, but it really all depends on his pan out which is obviously the risk.

Neat.

Glad that speculation can finally be done lol

And I guess I'm glad he isn't a Red

I am pretty happy with the results, I would rather get a stud pitching prospect than a slew of lower level prospects. I think a lot came down to the Twins not having much leverage. We have Revere, Willingham, and Doumit/Plouffe all capable of playing in the outfield this year. Then add in Hicks, Arcia, and Buxton in the minors and we are looking good in the OF for the next decade if everything goes well.

Nationals offense just became the best in the NL, bar none. If the pitching takes a step forward from last year(probably regression from Gonzalez, improvements in Strasburg/Zimmermann), and they make some smart bullpen moves we're looking at the World Series favorite.

Man I really wanted the braves to pull span and BJ. I wonder what they wanted for us to say no if this all nats gave up.

Braves wanted him but would not give up a top Pitching spec as the Nats did so the talks stopped.

Wanted him, sucks he is going to the Nats.

A top 100 prospect for Span??? What do you mean "all they gave up?" That is quite a bit.

Another good thing about this trade it keeps our centerfielder of the future in Brian Goodwin down in the minors so he can improve and get better and come 2015 he will be ready

I like this move for the Nats. An above average CF for a guy who is likely to end up a reliever.
