Fans are trying to get the Hornets back in the event New Orleans ditches the name. This group apparently was on ESPN last year.

From a forum. Not sure how true it is though.

"Gayle Benson, Saints/Hornets owner-Tom Benson's wife, just announced that the New Orleans name change WILL TAKE PLACE NEXT SEASON. She also announced that their colors will be red, gold, and navy blue."

Pelicans isn't the most appealing name, but based off the banding ideas that people have come up with this is one of my favorite. http://farm9.static.flickr.com/8152/6996117668_6e890fd0df_o.jpg

Love the Brass but that scheme is too much like the Pacers. They Should go with a black white and Gold scheme, which doesn't currently exist the NBA as opposed to copying the Pacers or the Cavs. Hope this guy Benson doesn't actually make the biggest marketing mistake in NBA history after naming a team the Bobcats and name NO the Pelicans. Seriously, there is no better way to turn off a fanbase than to re-brand a team name, with tons of history, to give it a name like the Pelicans. They should take a leaf out of NJ's book and make their team cool, not family friendly.

I think the pelican is the LA state bird, so there's some relevance. Even so, The Pelicans sounds like a high school team name. The franchise would be making a mistake to choose that name.

The best names I've heard are The Brass and The Krewe because of their local and cultural relevance, plus both names have double meaning and sound hard ... harder than The Pelicans or the WNBA-inspired Voodoo.

not to my knowledge... they have a huge hornets site (dont want to advertise another forum here) they have alot of concepts. might have to dig around.

use to have a guy named big dub that made sick designs and i think the team is consulting him about it so he took them down.

Just throwing a random thought out there...but I think the "New Orleans Horns" wouldn't be too horrible of a name. It would stick with the same theme as "The Brass"(which is a good idea), but at the same time would allow for something such as a Horned Lizard as a mascot(they are indigenous to Louisiana). That theme could make for some interesting logos/unis. It's a hell of a lot better than "The Pelicans". When I hear that name it reminds me of the Minor League baseball team that used to play in Pensacola, FL.

The problem is that, despite its actual origin, it's always going to look/sound to people like a bunch of old people tried to come up with a name that would be cool with the kids (Crew) and then change the spelling to be more cool with the kids (Krewe). You don't want to have a name where every single time someone hears it you have to say 'Oh, no, I realize it sounds like a super lame and tacky attempt at appealing to youth, or something from an early 90s line of sweatpants aimed at 9 year old boys, but it's actually this other thing'.

actually I do see complaining, and how old are you 6? Thats really what comes to your mind when you read it?

Well I think a 6 year old would read it the way you mean it, wouldn't they? Just about any adult will see the double meaning - really I think you just need to accept and have good humour about that, rather than just accusing other people of being at fault for noticing it.

You want it changed to Charlotte Hornets? The Hornets were replaced by the Bobcats but its a different organinzation, they dont have the history of Hornets in their past. It makes no sense. People will mistake people like Alonzo Mourning and Baron Davis for playing for them.

hey the mighty ducks worked in hockey....so who knows

Not to mention that Cardinals (both of them), Orioles, Penguins, Blue Jays, etc. Wayyy better than trying to sound 'scary' or 'cool'.

I would guess they are starting a WNBA franchise with a name like that

lol, Voodoo and Krewe were much closer to WNBA-type names. Just because it isn't supposed to be scary doesn't make it a WNBA name - see the list above, not to mention a huge number of the other great names in North American sports (Lakers, Knicks, Yankees, Red Sox, Sixers, Celtics, Niners, etc, etc, etc).

You want it changed to Charlotte Hornets? The Hornets were replaced by the Bobcats but its a different organinzation, they dont have the history of Hornets in their past. It makes no sense. People will mistake people like Alonzo Mourning and Baron Davis for playing for them.

I'll never understand how people think teams should be defined by or more representative of the corporate ownership than the city and fans. No it wouldn't be the same franchise, business-wise, but if it's Charlotte's NBA team and the Hornets name (which is also a pretty lame name, btw) is part of Charlotte's basketball heritage then I don't see the problem.
The current legal organization don't have Zo and BDiddy in their past, but the team and city (who should be the ones that actually matter) do.

If you think about it, there aren't very many names that are sports like. New York got their name from a synonym of a pair of pants.

Knickerbockers is a nickname for New Yorkers (at one time, Dutch New Yorkers) as well as the type of pants worn by those early New Yorkers. So, essentially they are the New York "New Yorkers." Creative

I agree with names not being such a big deal when there is some sort of good reason for them whether historical, ecological, or just plain cool sounding. That's also why "Bobcats" sucks.

Don't expect any of yall to understand. Pelicans is a great name for New Orleans.

For almost 60 years the Pelicans were the professional team in this city. There were no Saints, no Hornets, no Voodoo, no Brass, no Zephyrs, and so on. There was nothing other than Pelicans.

But most of all, New Orleans is all about being unique, offbeat, and even unclear. Pelicans fits New Orleans like a glove.

Most people that don't like it either aren't from here or have never been here.

It may be irrelevant to you but it's actually irrelevant what you think.

But please enlighten me. How is it a great name other than it's the state bird. Should Detroit be the Detroit Robins, or the New Jersey Eastern Goldfinches, or the Utah Common American Gull, the Portland Western Meadowlarks, the Phoenix Cactus Wren? The Oklahoma City Flycatchers. What were they thinking with Thunder?

BP must be a sponsor now to make right what they did to Pelicans with the oil spill.

What a terrible name. Their name alone might intimidate their opponents.

Lets be real people a teams mascot as never intimidated anyone. I think most people would piss their pants if a raptor suddenly appeared in front of them, but no one is intimidated about playing the Toronto Raptors. Just because its preys are fish, salamanders, and frogs is it less of a predator than a hawk that eats moles, squirrels, mice and shrews. A pelican can reach up to 15 mph faster than a red tailed hawk.

I've killed several hornets in my lifetime. Don't think I could say that about any other professional sports mascot or a pelican.

worst idea ever. poor N.O. fans...

Stfu if you had a the slightest chance in the world to play basketball a team name would not alter your decision. Stop being so damn ignorant.

Quite possibly one of the worst and least intimidating names for a professional team I've ever seen.

At least SOME of the other dodgy team names are historical hangovers (I'm sure they thought Knickerbockers would be cool 70 years ago, and Lakers actually made sense in Minnesota, same with the Jazz as they WERE the New Orleans Jazz before the move in 1979).

But seriously... the Pelicans? THAT's the best their multimillion dollar Office could devise?

Did they even think about what a horrible Crowd chant that will be? 3 syllables is just a BAD idea in general. Sure, there's the Mavericks, but chanting "Let's Go Mavs!" does not sound anywhere near as goofy as yelling "Let's go Pels!"

Let's go Pelicans?
Let's go Pels?
Let's go Cans?

NO Front office, you have Failed.

Pelicans is okay. Makes more sense than the Memphis Grizzlies, LA Lakers or Utah Jazz. And I'm a Jazz fan.

They need to just send the Hornets name to Charlotte, Jazz to New Orleans, and the Bobcats to Utah. Then all would make sense.

Assuming this is the official name and not a major media assumption as the colors suggested to be the favorites of Mrs. Benson do not match and no announcement has been made by ownership, it's not the greatest name. That said, it really only matters what people in Louisianna think of the name - they are the ones being targeted and the ones who will go to the games and buy the team gear.

Just for reference a local media outlet did a poll. 80+% of the people hate the name.

Even for the people that really hate this, I think it's hard to deny that Pelicans with whatever colours they come up with is straight away hands down better than Bobcats with their orange and whatever - so the overall quality of league names and livery is getting better, even if you think it's getting worse for NO.

I don't really understand the hate for Pelicans. I mean, I don't love it, but does everyone hate every other team named after a state bird (or any bird). Birds are pretty common to name a team after. There's only about a thousand sports teams named the Cardinals. At least this state bird is unique.
