In a cold gymnasium (reportedly 5 degrees above zero) in Binzhou, Shandong province, former NBA All-Star Tracy McGrady of the Qingdao Eagles refused to play after being on court for only 98 seconds of an exhibition game on Tuesday.

Fans, who paid a lot to watch T-Mac, were disappointed and threw bottles onto the court to complain about McGrady's stance. Referees ended the match prematurely in a chaotic fourth quarter.

"The fans' support was warm but the gym was too cold. Letting him play might get him hurt. We were worried," Qingdao General Manager Sheng Xishun said.

Wow.

In a video of the game also posted on Sina.com, most of the 5,000 fans in the arena are seen shouting in unison for McGrady to play.

Photos showed objects raining down on the court as security personnel escorted McGrady into the locker room.

I thought this was going to be McGrady going all diva in China, but 5 degrees is extremely cold. He would need a hat and gloves to play in that.

He needs to play in China to prepare himself for the NBA season because he had pre-training camp workouts where he wasn't in shape.

Once their season ends in February he'll be ready to join the Nets in their quest for a NBA Championship.

That's still really cold for wearing a basketball jersey and shorts. What the hell are they thinking in China?

Chronz will defend T-Mac's decision to not play by coming up with supportive statistical data of the average temperatures in that gym.

5 is way too cold. I'm Canadian, and I try not to play outside if it's under 13C, and that's IF it's been warm a few days prior.....no one likes bouncing the ball off of thawing ground.

I don't understand peoples fear of the cold. 5 above zero is a joke. I bike in that weather and this guy is supposed to be a professional athlete and cannot handle it? It's no wonder he never really achieved his true potential. How can you when you have such an attitude.

Probably he already has some offer from a contender and is forcing his way out.

and it would be justified. 5 degrees is cold to play in. its not like these guys are out side playing street ball here. these are pro's. if you cant warm up your arena you shouldnt even be holding games imo.

biking is much different than basketball. I wouldn't want to play either. Turn on the heat cheap skates. I hate playing outside when its cold. My hands get all cold and I can't shoot right. No reason to play in that weather. Who would even want to watch that? Just sign some auto graphs and let everyone go home.

If you are playing a game in that weather it's the same principle. Your body will warm up within 10 minutes of running and you'll be fine. It would only be a problem if you are just shooting around without much movement.

Meanwhile kobe fans will attack T-Mac's decision to not play by finding a quote about playing in the cold by a former basketball player

T-Mac is very injury prone and the cold just tightens up your muscles especially wearing only shorts and a jersey. He could have very easily pulled something, or worse.

He was just looking out for himself and his best interest.

BTW what the **** is a professional basketball team doing with a gym that cold? I doubt there that hard up for money because they just signed T-Mac.

This. He has problems staying healthy in a warm gym let alone screwing around in a icebox........

5 above zero is ****ing COLD. That's several times under freezing point. I wouldn't play either lol. It has to be Celsius. Even 40 degrees F is really ****ing cold.
